"Becker's body was discovered in Boulder Canyon on July 1, 1982. A close friend of the young woman told investigators at the time that she was on the Pearl Street Mall on June 20, 1982, and that was the last time she was seen alive. Two fishermen in the canyon discovered her badly decomposed body in the rocky terrain and heavy vegetation and her case switched from a missing person to a homicide investigation. * * * **
Orma Smith, 94, of Longmont, was found dead near Big Elk Meadows in Larimer County on July 9, 1982. She had been stabbed to death. Her case was unsolved until Larimer detectives closed the case in 2010 when DNA evidence from 1982 matched her neighbor at the time of her death. John Agrue had been a suspect, but detectives were unable to prove the connection until the DNA match after his death in 2009. Boulder County detectives announced on May 30, 2013, that Agrue also killed 20-year-old Susan Becker of Boulder.
Agrue had never been officially named a suspect in Becker's case, Ainsworth said. Detectives at the time looked into him, but did not turn up anything."

"He remained imprisoned until 1989. When he was released, he remained in Illinois.
"We don't know what he was doing for those 20 years," Ainsworth said of the two decades Agrue was free before his drug-overdose death."

"Investigators also recovered a journal from his car, Ainsworth said. In Agrue's handwriting, an entry read, "Lost my soul -- 6-20-82."
"That was the day (Becker) was killed," Ainsworth said.
He ran the file by the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit and three analysts agreed the case could be prosecuted if Agrue were still alive. Ainsworth said the Boulder County District Attorney's Office agreed. That closed the case."
