Still Missing CO - Suzanne Morphew, 49, Chaffee Co, 10 May 2020 *arrest* #89

From memory -- I recall BM confirming to Agent Grusing that he "clipped SM in the nose." I believe that's physical abuse. SM also recounted to SO that BM pinned her on the bed and would not let her up. I believe SM eluded to BM's physical abuse when she told JL that "BM knows better" (as told by JL to authorities when asked about the Morphew's relationship). I trust these incidents will refresh OP's memory. MOO

On page 78, Barry holding a gun to his head is discussed, along with other emotional abuse he inflicted.

Of course when Suzanne texted him about wanting a divorce, Barry responded by threatening suicide, as is standard protocol.

Or something.

“I’m done. I could care less about what you’ve been up to for years,” Suzanne texted Barry on May 6, 2020, according to local station KXRM-TV. “We need to figure this out civilly.”

According to testimony Tuesday in a preliminary hearing, Barry responded by professing his love for his 49-year-old wife and threatening to take his own life.

“I promise you, you are wrong about all the crazy thoughts about me,” he wrote, according to ABC News. “Why would I want another, only a fool would stray from an angel like you. When I’m dead, which won’t be long, you guys will be taken care of.”

He also wrote that he was "going to see my savior."

It's kind of a sad reflection on the media that these vanilla domestic abuse cases get turned into dramatic whodunnit entertainment when the mundane truth was not particularly hidden.

Especially women in these types of relationships are at risk from firearms in the house.

Still Missing - CO - Suzanne Morphew, 49, Chaffee Co, 10 May 2020 *arrest* #89

1/7/22 Update: The murder & voter fraud charges have been rescheduled for a status hearing on 1/12/22 @ 1pm.
1/12/22 Update: Dan Edwards and Mark Hurlbert for the State & defense attorneys, Dru Nielsen & Iris Eytan attending. Defense will be filing a written motion for Bond Modification to allow BM to travel to daughters house in Gunnison by tomorrow. Defense filed a Motion in October to add another week to the trial which is currently scheduled for 4 weeks starting 5/3/22. Defense would like trial to start April 25 & her reason stated is she believes if all 32 hours of BM’s interviews are played it will take a week. Judge did not rule on that yet. Defense wants individual voir dire during Jury selection. Mr. Edwards said he thought that would add 2 to 4 weeks to the trial. Not ruled on today. Defense has filed for change of venue. Not ruled on today. Defense was asking for the State’s expert witness endorsements & Edwards said Judge Murphy had already ruled, giving them until February 14. Judge agreed to keep that date. Most of the motions will be addressed at next Motions Hearing scheduled for 1/24, 1/25 & 2/1/22. Also motion to sever voter fraud charges from murder will be discussed at next motions hearing.

1/14/22 Update: His defense attorneys submitted a list of requests including a change of venue, moving the trial date up by a week to April 25 & a modification to his bond orders. Added to court hearings - a motions hearing for new trial motion on 2/24/22. Also Status hearing have been added on 1/24, 2/15, 2/1 & 2/24 for voter fraud charge.

The supposed planting of the dart cap is yet another defence meme about police framing suspects that has come up in every case I have followed.

Of course there is evidence law enforcement do this in some contexts - e.g. planting drugs in your car - but the idea they frame suspects in complicated murder cases, in such arcane and subtle ways is far fetched to say the least.

Planting a dartcap in the dryer?

It's about as far fetched as framing pistorius with some misplaced duvets and extension cords.

The thing is too, an innocent person would never build a story around a piece of evidence like that.

So Barry tells us it is true by making up the lie about shooting deer from the comfort of his breezeway, to saw their antlers off.

So to get out of this damning finding, he admits to another crime.

The fact that deer don't have antlers that time of year, and a working dart gun was apparently not found, notwithstanding.

Likely because he’s a criminal and it’s his first instinct. Although, I have to say (and I’m not a criminal) that if LE called me asking about my DNA being left at a crime scene, I’m lawyering up too.

As superbly covered in David Simon's book Homicide there is no advantage and every potential disadvantage in speaking to police without first consulting with counsel - and counsel will typically advise to say nothing, or make only a careful written statement.

Only an idiot would not lawyer up when linked to a murder.

There is an darkly funny episode of the TV series Homicide about this

Yes - because they didn't tell him where they found it - so he made up a story to cover up where he thought he must have lost it. They could have framed him much better by "finding it" elsewhere.

The unusual location actually proves the truth of it. He messed up and lost that critical piece of evidence.

Also in the dryer were the very clothes he was wearing that day. So it makes perfect sense that Barry murdered Suzanne, washed and dried his clothes, and simply forgot the cap in his shorts pocket.

Barry probably had never done the laundry in his life, and it came back to bite him.

Gotta check those pockets.

ETA: During Barry's final interview with the FBI, they did reveal to him the location where the cap was found. This was obviously well after he had concocted his ridiculous lie about it.

Thanks! I have many questions about that garage.

Yes, me too, like why does the workbench thingy on left of image have black bin bags stuffed inside with what looks like 2 planks removed to get them in there/show them there.
It's very sad and also very creepy having that many deceased deer staring at you - thosepoor animals. :(
What does the pictures show on board to left of image? Feel it's most likely BM showing off his awesome hunting skills
I see a motorbike and a pedal bike, but no ATV - where is it?
Why only that part of the garage was photographed and shown - am guessing its cos he 'cleaned his workbench, killing time' Saturday evening? And that's where the tranq stuff was? Still want to see rest of room as I want to see the door to access the pp property.

Thank goodness there wasn't 85 deceased chipmunks mounted around the room too

I’m still of the opinion if the jury has to become experts in DNA to understand what’s being presented, that’s a concern.
Not necessarily. I was on a jury once, where a man was charged with manufacturing speed in his garage, and was caught in the act by the police. One of the things the defence tried was to say that he didn't have all the necessary ingredients to do that. However, unbeknownst to anyone but the jury, our foreman (now a printer) had been an industrial chemist up to 18 months prior! So he knew far more about the process than the defence lawyer did, and so did we the jury by the end!

Yes - it's actually a classic man mistake to just bundle stuff up and not check :D

And agree they did that - we discussed it before IIRC - it's how they played him because he revealed the sensitivity of it and had to come up with a way that it might have got "inside"

An innocent person, with no sensitivity, wouldn't have known where it was, and would have been insistent to know where it was found, rather than trying to make up a story.

The Chase. Floor Plan, Available?
Iirc def atty said: the prosecutor-offered image showed the phone moving thru walls.
Seems door placements may merit more attention to refute def's attack at PH. If the state has not already finetuned that exhibit to show more detail of movement feasibly going thru doorways rather than walls, I hope they will. Or have the exhibit's creator/provider modify.

As Assessor's sketch does not show the door locations or room names, seems it would be helpful to snag PP's actual floor plan showing interior walls & doors, etc.

Per Chaffee Co. website, a floor plan must be submitted w application for permit to build home.* As PP home was built in approx'ly 2008,** seems floor plan may be avail online, but I can't find it. Anyone??? Thx in adv.

Click to enlarge image from Assessor's ofc.

Is that the safe in the upper left corner with the antlers stacked on top? Did Barry claim there was $70,000 missing from the safe when LEO returned it to him in order to imply that Suzanne took that much cash from the safe? LEO had possession of the house for a while so I don't understand why they had to physically remove his safe from the property. Our safe is bolted to the concrete foundation. I don't have understanding for why he would leave his safe free standing especially since he employed 'meth heads'.

After 48 hours I become more and more convinced that per the aa Suzanne saying she went and looked at houses and had a good night. I think this is what made him realize she was serious, and killed her.

The text messages are left over artefacts of the conversations they had, and how they were with each other.

I've no doubt by Saturday morning, he was set on his course of action.

Respectfully, “vanilla domestic abuse cases” ?. . . “mundane truth”?

The sad reflection seems to be IMHO not on the media or on anyone turning this case into dramatic whodunnit entertainment but perhaps more on how difficult and complicated it can be to try to safely or “civilly” escape from a long term abusive intimate partner relationship — even if the victim/s appear to the outside world to have every privilege apart from gender on their side.

This case has its own absurdities that make it intriguing. The murder of a mother on mother’s day. The fact the presumed killer had been gaslighting her and terrorizing local wildlife and Holiday Inn Express housekeeping. The dopey trash runs. The tranquilized chipmunks and deer/dear. The antler hoarding. All the fetishized decapitations.

The similarities to other familiar sporty American straight white unfaithful abusive successful married guy high school sweetheart picture perfect family cases.

The invisible fencing. The fact the victim’s financial liquidity and separate property — inheritance from her dead mother and dead step grandmother — about half a million U.S. dollars had been diverted by her captor/husband. How she battled and defeated cancer twice but failed to escape her malignant spouse.

How she accepted or tolerated the normalized abuse for longer than she should have like the frog in slowly boiling water — fearing her daughters would be weaponized against her — and how like textbook studies tend to show — the apex of danger for her coincided with her communication of intention to at last risk it all and leave not silently but bravely — the irony and Atwoodesque coda of his literally disenfranchising her postmortem to MAGA as he knew she would have wanted, shamelessly and casually co-opting her vote after he took her life without regret but doubtless feeling entitled, his alleging her to be sleeping with a man in the basement — a nod to the underworld or the mob — silencing her by burning her journals, bleaching her scratch marks from his body (and blaming her for them), making it so she’d never be found, moving on with her daughters and money, selling the poorly landscaped and chipmunk and antler infested house, torturing her with scripture so she stayed torn long enough to never get away completely —

Dart Cap. Clothes Dryer.
I own a Maytag clothes dryer. This image is from inside the dryer drum showing a panel with holes that leads to the lint screen. The dart cap could definitely flow through the holes of this panel and be found in the screen....

@DeDee Thanks for bringing up the dart sheath/cap & the dryer. Iirc the prior sales listing, before BM & SM bought PP, had a pic/pix of laundry room. I can't find them now, but iirc, someone posted some old listing pix on these threads.

If we could see dryer & identify the manufacturer, we might locate a user guide, maybe w an "exploded view" of that brand of dryer. Might help resolve the question of if/where dart cap/sheath could have gotten hung up and gone unnoticed for multiple loads. Anyone??? TiA. my2cts

Partial dna means that a person who is related to the dna found was processed through the database.
This was poorly stated. Sorry about that.
What I meant to say is that the 'partial DNA' found in the glove box was a familial DNA of someone who committed the sexual crimes in other states - meaning that someone related to the person who committed those crimes left their DNA in the glove box.
That a layman can be led to believe, and that a nationally televised supposed news program would be so remiss to not only not explain what 'partial dna' means, but to allude that another person may may be responsible for Suzanne's disappearance/murder is unconscionable.
The defense had a field day with that bull. The prosecution had better have an expert to squash those blatant lies.

Maybe I didn't put it artfully, but by "vanilla", I mean only that society struggle to accept how typical this case is when you strip away the tv murder mystery aspects.

SM sent warning she was not safe, then days later was murdered because she tried to leave.

When a woman says she is frightened of her abuser, most times she is not murdered (thank goodness). But when she is actually murdered, we seem as a society, to be in denial about it, instead of listening to the literal meaning of her words.

Especially, I am troubled by the bail in a domestic murder case (yet again). Please note I am not in favour of people rotting in jail for years waiting for trial - but the guy is almost certainly a massive danger to women, and letting him out because the evidence is not strong enough seems remarkable to me.
