I’ve thought about the reason for this specific trip of BM to Poncha Market quite a bit. He was a “regular” there, the manager recognized him iirc. I think he may have been looking for a receipt he had previously tossed (carelessly) in the trash, maybe one for “chlorine” he had purchased a few days prior. I don’t think he was getting rid of “evidence”. There’s easier, less conspicuous ways to do that. It’ll be interesting for these puzzle pieces to come together.

I don't recall hearing this before. Do you have a link for this info?

I've never heard the doctrine applied after the crime as it goes to not all people react the same to situations. Not all guilty react with how you think they should act. However, I think BM's actions after disappearing SM are all part of the plethora of circumstancial evidence that will convict him. MOO
I agree. In addition, I believe Colorado statutes require a specific mental state for each charge, rather than a more general "guilty mind" - the People must prove a criminal defendant acted "knowingly", "intentionally", "recklessly,"negligently", and so on. BM is charged with causing SM's death with "intent" to do so, and "after deliberation." These are the specific elements of Mens Rea the prosecutor must prove for the First Degree Murder charge. It will be interesting to see how much, if any, of the information that affects our understanding of BM's personality and character are admitted as evidence in court, given the relatively narrow definition of the mental state element.

I am fascinated by this. Personality is somewhat subjective and how do you connect it to a specific crime. Character might be a tad easier but I am very interested in our this will play out if this goes to trial. Plenty of controlling people with character flaws are in our society and don’t murder people so how the prosecutor supports this case will be interesting to me especially if the direct evidence is thin.

Outdated technology. Water bladders are bigger and easier to use. Other than an occasional HydroFlask I don't see very many thermoses anymore.

I think the OP was referring to Thermos brand coolers, not actual thermoses.

Snipped From the linked article:

And a store manager at the Poncha Market described an encounter with Suzanne’s husband, a few days after Suzanne’s disappearance was publicized.

Somebody knocked on the window and it was Barry Morphew,” Tiffany Butala said.
Butala is a store manager at the market and watched Barry on May 12th around 8 p.m. write the note on the back of a receipt.

“He went to write down a description of maybe what she was wearing,” Butala said. “I just thought it was weird because he didn’t explain the color of her eyes were or her hair or anything about her like how tall she was or anything.”

Store manager named and apparently recognized BM. Manager didn’t seem to have any question as to whether it was BM or someone who looked like him. She “knew” it was him. BM left this note prior to posting his 26 sec FB video, BM was still the nameless, faceless husband to the “missing mother” iirc. In this small community, there are few stores, you get to know who your customers are and recognize them. Poncha Springs is a small little town between Puma Path home and Salida, the largest town the Morphew’s lived closer to. Living in somewhat rural areas, there’s a need to make frequent stops to close small stores (bread, milk, gas, etc). Speaking from experience having lived 20 miles from a town & having a little market store just a few miles up the road.

Hope this explains it. MOO EBM clarification

“Mens Rea” I just need to say to @10ofRods thank you for your contributions explaining these legal concepts since there are several of us who don’t have the education/experience to possess your knowledge. Your posts are always educational and explanatory.
Following up with your post @DeDee the husband only described the “items” to look for, but left out the most important description, one of his dear “missing” wife! Of course, he was only interested in making sure someone found the helmet to further his lies about the bike ride, not finding his wife.

This headline always kills me :). WRONG Barry, people KNOW the TRUTH! LE know a LOT of the truth. Some very observant armchair sleuths have monitored your actions and words and KNOW one simple truth, YOU murdered Suzanne and they are about to learn many, many more facts in a very short time about what you did. The ones that don’t know the truth are the ones that believe your lies. Perhaps the AA will open their eyes and they will learn the truth about you too! JMHO

I don’t think that BM will ever regret killing SM, he has justified that in his mind. His only real regret is that he was caught.
Agree 100% The only attachment BM had left for SM prior to Murdering her, was formed from a habit. She had been part of his daily life for 30+ years. I’m sure that has been an adjustment for BM. But he no longer loved or cared anything about her. MOO

In one full year the only times BM has spoken publicly via the media is to defend himself! Every time LS was able to speak to BM, he was defending himself against what was being posted on social media, what employees had said, etc, Not one time did he contact any media to express any concerns SM was still missing, ask for new leads, or to ask for help locating her.
Talk about doing everything a guilty person does and NOTHING an innocent person does. His behavior will be probably be studied in law enforcement/detective courses “Profiling Suspects”. Lol. MOO

Doesn't it feel good to know there will be no grilling of peanut butter on this beautiful Sunday in May? Or ever again...

LMBO that’s when I learned “grilling peanut butter” was a thing. BM sure got sick of Daily Mail photos. :). It wasn’t long after that he moved. Privacy may have been an issue for him :) :)

Not sure why but having trouble quoting Momofthreeboys post above:

Very true. IMO, most average “garden variety” Narcissists don’t rise to the level of murdering someone. They mostly wreak havoc on families, workplaces and society to a degree. If pushed far enough, IMO, some of the more out of touch with reality and their emotions, some “average” N’s are capable of killing someone, for example, in a fit of uncontrolled rage/blind rage.

IMO, if BM is guilty of all he’s been charged with, which I believe him to be, then he isn’t just your average, character flawed, controlling, power hungry Narcissist, IMO, he’d likely fall nearer/on the further, more extreme end of the spectrum i.e.,Narcissistic Socio/Psychopath. Yes, these types walk amongst us also, undiagnosed/unmedicated wreaking havoc on families, workplaces, society, filling up jails and prisons. In this case, I believe the state has a plethora of circumstantial evidence that supports BM evildoings as well as direct evidence we don’t know about yet, which all considered, will bear out and support just how sick/flawed of a person BM really is.

We’ve had a preview of BM’s character, which IMO, leaves very little to be desired to say the absolute least. IMO, the AA in and of itself, and if eventually goes to trial (I do not think BM will confess/plea and give up location of SM’s remains), will likely leave no doubt for most who read the AA, and after the state presents its case at future trial, leave no doubt in minds of jurors, that BM isn’t just your average, controlling character flawed Narcissist, but someone much more calculating, evil, sinister, depraved, etc.

All of the above IMHOO

Error, can you please refresh my memory about the grilled PB thing? I’m drawing a blank here, and the only thing coming to mind is possibly a family member referencing BM making such a thing for one of the daughters? (And I may have that incorrect)

The daily mail managed to take a photograph of BM barbecuing at the pp home and by the grill was a jar of peanut butter.

oh...interesting. Thanks. I’ll have to go search for that then. Not that it’s important but just because I’m curious...

It was reported that BM spent the night (May 9th)

I saw the interview with CM and the Poncha Springs market. They did not recognize him. I don't know exactly which one, it was TIR not PE.

If you google it you will find the picture of BM wearing a blue t shirt with the sleeves cut off, grilling food with a jar of peanut butter on the side of the grill. Imo

Yes, we've been speculating about that timeframe ever since he first made that statement. At one point he also said that Suzanne's phone was dead at a certain time. I thought he said it was 7:00 am but I don't remember if he said it was Saturday or Sunday. I'm hoping someone will remember.

Anyway, I think the 3 1/2 window must be based on his phone or GPS information, and it was at some point Sunday morning. Andy said that Barry's timeline didn't match up to the GPS data, and he wasn't where he said he was.

I've always thought he disposed of the body on his way to Denver, before he got to the jobsite or the hotel.

Imo
Agree. A dumpster on the way.

I think the DM just "assumed" he spent the night at the hotel. It's never been verified that he spent the night or even when he arrived.

JP said it looked like he had been lying on the bed and MG said it looked like BM had made it himself. He may have taken a nap at some point (murdering and hiding a body must be exhausting) but we don't know for sure what time he got there or when he booked the room. Imo

not a single thermos cooler on the property when the house was searched. Not one. This hunter/fisherman/outdoorsman/landscaper....and not a single cooler was found by authorities when they searched. How is that possible, given this individual's lifestyle?

I happened to have a thought today about the coolers. Barry strikes me as a status symbol kind of guy so I wondered if he had to have only the finest when it came to his toys. Would he go for the expensive YETI coolers? They have serial numbers and you can register them and get little freebies like stickers, bottle openers etc. Wonder if LE can check with YETI and see if they registered any coolers?

For those of us who believe BM killed Suzanne sometime Saturday night and disposed of her sometime overnight into the morning hours, before acting out the Broomfield part of his alibi...

What the heck was he really doing digging through the trash can in front of the Poncha Market, after hours, on the Tuesday following? We know he wasn't looking for her, since he knew exactly where she was. Was he checking to see if evidence he'd stashed there, had been located? I wonder what you all think he was really doing there.

I think he may have been doing something as simple as looking for store receipts from a certain time period where he needed an alibi.

While we all know something about the weekend timeline, there's also Monday and Barry's actions that day - he may still have been disposing of evidence and looking for red herrings.

That's just a wild guess - I think someone else here came up with the idea months back, and it stuck in my head. Maybe even wanted to stick a receipt in Suzanne's car (the search around the property had just begun) or near her car, to imply that she had driven it on Sunday.

At any rate, it was bizarre.
