Barry Morphew Put a Gun to His Head, Asked Suzanne Morphew How She Would Pay for Cancer Treatments if She Left Him: Court Testimony

At a pretrial hearing for Barry Morphew, investigators shared text messages with the court, showing that Suzanne Morphew told a friend she wanted out of her marriage — but didn’t believe her husband would let her go without a fight.

Suzanne Morphew was reported missing on May 10, 2020; a year later, Barry Morphew was charged with murdering his wife. Suzanne’s body has not been found, but the lead prosecutor said this spring that the District Attorney’s office is confident in the evidence they have against Barry Morphew.

Barry Morphew is in court on Monday for a preliminary hearing, where witnesses, including members of law enforcement, have testified about evidence collected in the case as well as Suzanne and Barry’s relationship at the time of Suzanne’s disappearance.

As previously reported, Libler did not come forward to police after learning of Suzanne’s disappearance, but cooperated after investigators located him.

According to the text messages either shown or read in court Monday, Suzanne told her friend that Barry had tried to discourage her from leaving him — in one instance, by bringing up finances.



“How would you pay for things, like your medical bills for cancer?,” Barry allegedly said to Suzanne.

In another instance, Sheila reportedly told investigators, Barry pushed Suzanne into a closet and put a gun to his head, asking her if that what was she wanted — presumably for him to die.

At a pretrial hearing for Barry Morphew, investigators shared text messages with the court, showing that Suzanne Morphew told a friend she wanted out of her marriage — but didn’t believe her husband would let her go without a fight.

Evidence presented at the hearing includes the last know proof of life for Suzanne Morphew and the fact that Barry Morphew visited the online site ‘Ashley Madison,’ a hook-up site for married people, and the site Celeb Jihad. During the first day of testimony, investigators reveal that Suzanne Morphew was involved in a two-year affair.

Preliminary trial reveals Suzanne had an affair

A preliminary/proof evident hearing for Barry Lee Morphew, accused of murdering his wife, Suzanne, opened Monday in District Court at the Chaffee County Courthouse. Judge Patrick Murphy is presiding.

Suzanne, 49, disappeared on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020. Her mountain bike was found near her home in Maysville and her helmet was found a few days later on the south side of U.S. 50. Despite extensive searches, which are on-going, neither she nor her body have been found.

Barry, 53, was arrested May 5 and charged with first degree murder, tampering with evidence and attempting to influence a public servant.

The bulk of Monday’s testimony centered around the revelation by defense attorney, Dru Nielsen, that Suzanne had been having an affair for two years which was unknown to even her closest friends.

The affair was discovered when law enforcement discovered a spy pen in Suzanne’s closet which she purchased to place in Barry’s vehicle because she suspected him of having an affair.

A spy pen is a voice activated device that records speech. It had recorded Suzanne speaking with a man named Jeff.

“She was speaking as if Jeff was her lover,” Nielson said. “It took law enforcement two months to identify Jeff.”

Suzanne hadn’t worked except for a brief time as a teacher so finances were a problem and she mentioned to Oliver that Barry was going to pay back money she had loaned him from an inheritance she received from her mother.

Reference to that money was also on the spy pen. Suzanne texted that when she mentioned leaving, Barry would ask her how she was going to pay her medical bills. She was recovering from cancer.

Barry had not known about the affair. However, Harris said that in questioning Libler, Liler said if Barry had any idea he (Libler) and Suzanne were together Barry would have talked to him first and he didn’t think Barry had anything to do with her disappearance.

So the tranquilizer dart cap was actually a tranquilizer needle sheath found in the dryer which is a disposable needle recapping device. #BarryMorphew told investigators, "I don't know how that got there... it had nothing to do with me."

---On May 8, #BarryMorphew allegedly brought up moving to Arizona. Grusing said this was the first time this was ever mentioned and Suzanne thought it was strange. She was looking at homes for sale in Salida, CO according to text messages.

Now turning to May 13th, Undersheriff says photos of #BarryMorphew were taken. They included some injuries on his hands in various stages of healing, and on his left arm just below shoulder, there were fingernail marks.

Law enforcement found a live .22-caliber round next to Suzanne Morphew’s bed and a needle cap used with a tranquilizer gun in the dryer of the home she shared with her husband in the days after she disappeared, investigators testified in a court hearing in her husband’s murder case Monday morning.

Prosecutors during the hearing also played body camera footage that showed Barry Morphew inside the family’s home on May 10, 2020 — the evening his wife was reported missing. Sheriff’s deputies escorted Morphew inside so they could get an item of his wife’s clothing for tracking dogs. Undersheriff Andy Rohrich said Monday that Morphew acted oddly while they were in the house that evening. It was the first time Barry Morphew had been inside the home since his wife’s reported disappearance and he did not try to look around.

“He’s not even trying to call her phone,” Rohrich said. “This is the last place, according to his testimony, that he’s seen his wife alive and he’s not asking any questions.”

SALIDA, Colorado — Barry Morphew had injuries to both of his hands and scratch marks on one of his arms a few days after his wife Suzanne went missing last year.
n Monday, Undersheriff Rohrich said that he arrived at the Morphews’ residence on the evening of May 10, 2020. He testified about what the Sheriff’s Office found in the house and in the vehicles belonging to the Morphews.


He testified that:

• Barry Morphew’s pickup, which was seized at the house after he returned from trip to Broomfield that day, presumably on business, had clutter in the back seat and was dirty.
• In Suzanne Morphew’s vehicle, investigators found her purse, which held a wallet with her driver’s license, a medical card, credit cards and cash.
• In the home, the doorframe of the master bedroom was damaged. Rohrich testified that the damage was consistent with a forced entry, and that an unspent .22 caliber shell was found next to Suzanne’s side of the bed.
• A Bible and a book titled “Courage to Change,” both belonging to Suzanne Morphew, were in a sitting area, but her journal that deputies were told by those who knew Suzanne would be with the other two books was not found in the house.
• In a fireplace, investigators found partially burned wood, the remains of paper that resembled wrapping paper, two long pieces of metal like those of hanging folders from a filing cabinet and strand material similar to that from a book binding.
• On May 13, photographs were taken of Barry Morphew at the Department of Public Health. He had injuries on both of his hands, and three scratch marks on one of his upper arms.

MG had told investigators that #BarryMorphew was the first boss that respected her. She said that she heard Barry's truck around 4 a.m. Sunday morning and it was not a surprise to her that he left her.

CBI sent an email to the hotel on May 12 to preserve all surveillance videos. They picked up the thumb drive. Agents also got the logs of who was coming and going into the hotel. Agent Coback doesn't have information if the hotel room was swabbed for #SuzanneMorphew DNA.

Another CBI agent went back to the hotel on Sept. 1, 2020 to take photographs after media attention about the chlorine smell in #BarryMorphew room. Eytan found an email from the hotel manager saying that room is above the pool area and still smells like chlorine 4 months later.

If a person would be injected by BAM (serum for tranquilizer darts) the human would be in complete sedation within 2-3 minutes. The woman would likely run, then become wobbly and unstable before dozing off, according to the Parks and Wildlife expert.
