I've seen a lot of talk about how terrible the media has been in this entire tragedy. I'm a journalist. I've worked for magazines and newspapers; both in fact checking, editorial and as a reporter (I can verify this if necessary). I think it is important for people to truly understand what journalists are dealing with, especially in the face of a tragedy like this.

Journalism, in today's culture, is a thankless job. Journalists today are tasked with the impossible job of making everyone happy. If we report on a story there are people who consider us "heartless vultures" who are bothering victims for a story. If we do NOT report on a story we are "heartless vultures" who don't care about real people. If we don't give you the information you want "RIGHT NOW!" we are lazy and not doing our job. If we give you the information you want "RIGHT NOW!" and have to amend it later to correct misinformation provided by sources we are lazy and not doing our job.

We are tasked with getting information from people that do not want to talk to us. We are tasked with writing a story that is both sensitive, accurate and unbiased. Simply put, you can not please everyone all of the time, but as a journalist today we can't please anyone, any of the time it would seem.

The inconsistencies seen in THIS tragedy and others like it really can't be avoided with the instant reporting that is expected of the media today. The information that is being received and put out there isn't made up, or assumed. It, generally, is information received from trusted, verified sources. The sources are going with the information they have at that moment and that information is subject to change at any time with an active investigation.

Many newspapers also go with the information that the wire services get; if that information isn't correct then every news outlet gets the wrong information. It is a slippery slope. You can have the information now, or you can have it 100% right. You simply can't have both instantly.

I agree, thanks for your honesty...Today's media, especially the major national groups, it's all about the race to get a story..who gets the story first...

Coroner employee suspended from her job after 'bringing in HUSBAND to view body of Sandy Hook killer'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...d-job-allowing-husband-view-killers-body.html
Looks like she came to the job with some other baggage. Here is the original article from which Daily Mail copied. It's a much longer, more informative piece:

State Worker Placed On Leave After Letting Her Husband View Lanza's Body At Autopsy Facility
Incident 2 Days After Shootings Leads To Complaint, Investigation, Sources Say

By JON LENDER and DAVE ALTIMARI,
The Hartford Courant
9:10 p.m. EST, January 2, 2013

"Access to the medical examiner's office is strictly controlled. The public cannot go in without first signing in at the front office and being escorted into the building by an employee, and even that access is limited to the administrative offices in the front of the building. All authorized personnel have key cards to enter the building.

The only people allowed into the rear area, where bodies are stored and where autopsies are performed, are the authorized staff of the office and law enforcement personnel attending autopsies as part of their investigations."

Much more...

the dailymail link and the courant link were earlier used in this case to provide the untrue stories about the car as well. I don't believe a MO would do this. JMO
Huh??? Not following you, don't know what an MO is, and no, the original untrue stories about the car definitely did not come from either the Daily Mail or the Hartford Courant.

It wasn't the ME it was an administrative employee.

>>However, after H. Wayne Carver II, the chief state medical examiner, learned of the matter, he placed her on the leave about four days later, the sources said. An internal complaint was filed, they said.<<
I don't know how this new claim and investigation will end up, but unfortunately it doesn't surprise me at all.

We had a case here a few years ago where 2dispatchers from the CHP emailed some pictures to friends of a gruesome car accident that depicted the mangled young driver. As you might guess they were leaked all over the Internet and even used to torment the family in horrible ways. These pictures are still around and the family will never escape these images of their daughter.amazing what morbid curiosity will cause people to do.

I don't recall any MSM articles on the seemingly mistaken owner of the car, but you are right that there has been plenty of misreporting.

What I find even worse is that she was an administrative worker/processing technician ("she was moved there after having worked for 14 years in the governor's budget office"). Do those employees typically even have access to corpses allowed to go in the coroner's office? I find that unacceptable in itself, let alone she trotted her husband in there.

Came across this on FB, sorry if it's been posted before:

Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
"where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
"this is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house."
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
"Let My power and presence re-enter this land!"
"may this country be delivered from the hands of fools"
"I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
"come now my children, let me show you around."
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
"in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

Is there a scanner thread for this event? Anyone do a rewind back to that date/time and listen to what took place? I found it on the RR forum but wondered if WS had it - and I am not good with searches. Tia.

No, but an extra adult is always nice...even if their presence is just comforting as they sit by a child with a bloody nose or bump on head as they wait for a parent to pick them up, etc.

Yeah, if it's really an extra adult and the cost of the armed ex LE guard is not taken away from the funding of the rest of the school staff.

I had stepped away from the thread while I was away for Christmas and New Year's. I'm not sure if it has been posted here but I think the following is important to note:

The following report from Pete Williams of NBC News (IMO one of the more credible journalists working this story) has learned from federal and state authorities that no assault rifle was used in the shooting and in fact, they only recovered 4 hand guns from inside the school:
<modsnip>

This information raises a lot of questions... Thoughts?

The pathologist that did the autopsies said it was the "long gun" that was used. Who is telling the truth, and why is there so much disinformation?

There is a lot of discussion and the links up above to indicate what the true weapon used was.

I think because the public screams to know, information was put out there quickly. Can you imagine what would have been said if information was put out later, maybe even days later?

This is what we demand. This is what we get. People responding quickly in a crisis. Mistakes are made.

We have an issue. We are human. Not perfect.

I read the artcile, how incredibly classless and bad taste, immature to photograph this poor women...there are so many wack jobs on the internet looking for anything to bring attention to themselves by publishing these photos..

I think I have missed a lot, but is this really being questioned? I remember the pathology reports stating all the decedents were shot with the .223 rifle. And without exception, numerous times. Some as many as eleven times.

Oh, Reannan, I fear the pathologist's report is true. :(. But I really don't know.

I too, wonder why there seems to be so much conflicting info. :(

Seriously, our kids are our future and for that matter, all people are our future. This is a dawn of a new era to help prevent violence. That day is now.

State funding could afford to help pay for security officers in schools. Obviously not every school, but if the state govt's got smart and cut wasted funding to those who abuse welfare, the foster care system, and other entitlement programs ,then that money could be used usefully for beefed up security

just my opinion
