Whenever someone commits a crime, there is a big outcry for them to not be able to plead insanity, and outrage if they are sentenced to a hospital. So since there are very few convicted criminals being sent to institutions, maybe a lot of them closed because there aren't enough people to fill the beds?

I'm really not surprised that nobody thought AL would be dangerous to others, he didn't come across as disturbed as much as he came across as terrified. I feel terribly sorry for his closest family members, they must have a very hard time imagining him committing such an act. I hope his father and brother are able to get past this and are not going through ill treatment in their communities. That always worries me in cases, especially high profile ones.

Just now on ABC live, the family members all went to the live mic/press conf and said "i will light a candle for..."

It was so moving; these parents have pled for quiet; for privacy for something achievable regarding gun control and will never stop...the momentum may have....but their grief and loss....was almost too painful to watch. I DK how they did it today.

You know frm what I saw with my dear friend; the law didn't matter, it wasn't the beds, it was the insurance companies, and almost a mandatory 10 day limit and out the door the ill person goes...back to society.

Now; when I was young; my one aunt was born with H20 Deprivation which led to her severe mental retardation. She was raised in the system; at what used to be Fairview in CA. So I grew up going there; as scary as it was. And it was like the Walking Dead on the grounds because they all wandered, free on the grounds for most of the day; IF THEY COULD. Imagine, all were cared for; and other than missing personal items like records radios and gems being stolen all the time; she was well cared for. Then we closed most places like that; and now there is really no where to go; if you are that ill. She has to be dressed; she never learned abc's or numbers and cannot cook or do much but she does talk; loudly and my god; she is still alive and approaching 80 if you can believe that. I have a hard time believing that she has lived this long. BUT I credit her EARLY care at Fairview Hosp....because she has had to move several times now; and it's home care.

These "home care" type facility's can be pretty scary as well. My family still visits her, she doesn't know "time" and has no sense of time....but when insurance companies and little ppl behind a desk decide...well we can have you with us for just 10 days....we all know that isn't going to solve CHIT. EVER. So hopefully someone will start to care, because as it stands; most no longer do.

This is about Gun Control; but it's also about mental health care and what has happened to that system. Many don't believe it in any longer *including myself* because what it's become is a label a code: adhd, autism; labels names for things that can never be fixed.

At least when my aunt was living at Fairview we knew she was in hospital and safe for the most part. I however was not safe on those grounds and it used to scare the chit out of me. Thnk....american horror story.

But we have our very own American Horror Story don't we? Automatic weapons hv no place in our society. Until we GET THAT. We will not grow. Will will remain stagnant.

I've seen zero evidence suggesting Lanza had schizophrenia.
Scizophrenic hear voices (commands) telling them to hurt someone (for example). Not a single person have come forward suggesting Lanza ever heard voices.

Hearing voices does not always occur in schizophrenia. It is true that there are no known accounts of Adam Lanza hearing voices.

I wonder if people thought that Lanza might be the kind he would go on a rampage killing. I know that was the case with Seung-Hui Cho and Jared Loughner. One of the tattoo artist who drew bullet tattoos on Loughner said he was a "Columbine candidate". His classmates thought he would go on a killing rampage at school. As for Cho, his classmates thought he is the kind who would be involved in school shootings.

Last week on TLC a show reaired about an American child who was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 2. Her parents knew she saw and heard people not there at age 6 months.

Do you remember what the title of that show is?

2 years old??????? That is really young. I wonder if it could be another disorder like this one I saw posted.

Now, this leads me to the next question. Usually schizophrenia develops around late teens to 20s, but can go as late as 40. Than you have children who develop schizophrenia at an early age. I wonder what factors are out there that cause schizophrenia to develop early or late.

""Voices" are the most common type of hallucination in schizophrenia."

"Scientists have long known that schizophrenia runs in families. The illness occurs in 1 percent of the general population, but it occurs in 10 percent of people who have a first-degree relative with the disorder, such as a parent, brother, or sister. People who have second-degree relatives (aunts, uncles, grandparents, or cousins) with the disease also develop schizophrenia more often than the general population. The risk is highest for an identical twin of a person with schizophrenia. He or she has a 40 to 65 percent chance of developing the disorder."

As for people thinking Lanza might be the kind to go shooting. Lanza hardly communicated with any people in his later years. Which would obviously limit the number of people who could think Lanza was going to do anything.

"About 70 percent of patients with schizophrenia hear voices"

http://news.yale.edu/2001/03/09/stu...-continue-yale-over-600000-grants-nimhbr-dana

And........

Dutch findings suggest one in 25 people regularly hears voices. Contrary to traditional belief, hearing voices is not necessarily a symptom of mental illness.

I don't really see whether it matters if AL had schizophrenia or not. Or whether he heard voices or not. What he did at Sandy Hook is not indicative of having schizophrenia or hearing voices.

My two best friends have a child with Asperger's. IMOO, it is so terrible that AL is repeatedly labeled as a child with Asperger's. AL had way more, way way way more, than Asperger's. I don't believe "Asperger's" had anything to do with what he did. AL was severely mentally ill. Severely. All of it. The worst of the worst. For those who are ignorant about MI and hear about AL on TV and also hear the word Asperger's associated with AL -- just feels, too me, like such a disservice to those human beings who do have Asperger's. BTW, Susan Boyle just announced she has Asperger's --- the singer who won everyone's hearts...on one of those singing shows...who was also made fun of. My heart hurts for her this evening.

The son stabbed his dad and shot himself with a rifle. Yet another situation where a mentally ill person was able to gain access to a gun.

And a knife.

I'm pretty sure the below links about Jani will interest you, imo amyway. Also you can google search for Oprah's special on Jani that aired in 2009. Please let me know what you think.

Oh and now the same family states that Jani's little brother is schizophrenic.

Considering schizophrenia has a genetic predisposion, I am not sure why that would be surprising.

Not to get too far off subject, so this is just a side note: there are a lot of abuse and munchausen-by-proxy allegations surrounding Jani and her brother.

Don't put words in my mouth.....
I didn't say I was surprised.

I must admit the mom seems a little too giddy sometimes. You'll know what I mean if you watch the shows. IMO

There is not one specific place… I have read about it on various blogs and message boards. As I said, it is just allegations, but the allegations seemed to mostly stem from the parents actions outside of what has been shown on shows like Oprah. Then there is the whole exploitation part that really upsets people.

I think it's understandable why people look for severe mental illness to explain AL's actions, and it is possible, however considering the amount of planning he did along with the very deliberate destroying of motivational evidence, along with the calculated murder of his mother beforehand I think that is unlikely now.

I think he'd been planning it for years.
