Agree to disagree. I do think that it would have been alot harder for the murderer to have say, smothered twenty innocent children. Guns make it easier and so much less personal.

I will never EVER believe that more guns at the school would have been a good idea. :(. MOO

I am so weary and sickened by the daily barrage of shooting deaths in the news. And neither side will ever convince the other side that they are wrong so here we are with school shooting #31 since Columbine.

And it will sadly never change. :(

Yes we can agree to disagree but I know thousands of violent crimes are stopped yearly by a legal gunowner even though the media hates to report the truth.

Well we will never know. If they had had armed security guards on campus today there is a good chance some of the lives could have been saved. Without anyone else having a weapon no one had a chance.

Gun control laws have to be adjusted for you guys .. it's just awful and unnecessary that this kind of thing happens so much in the States :( Those poor little kids, their parents, families, and everyone effected by this horrible tragedy.

The following is only my opinion/feelings and in no way intended to wrinkle any feathers but I'm really not understanding why the gun debate is even being addressed at this point. In a few days, when the details about the shooters mental state, previous incidents, etc... come to light, maybe. But there are parents grieving the loss of a child, 11 days before christmas. Possibly siblings who made it out alive who's little brother or sister did not. SOmeone's wife, husband, mother, daughter, son, etc.... lost their life today. And had he stabbed them or blown up the school, I don't think it would make the grief anyless painful.

Because, every time there is another mass shooting in this country, there is shock, and disbelief, and hand wringing, and no real discussion about gun control, and then everyone gets to forget about it and pretend that guns are not part of the issue, until the next time it happens. Lather, rinse, repeat. Until the people of this country wake up and get real about gun violence in the country it's going to happen over and over again. NO ADMINISTRATION has ever posited a total ban on all guns, and it will NEVER happen. BUT, the fact that assault rifles are not banned is criminal. Their sole purpose is to kill as many people as possible in the shortest possible time. If we don't face it now, everything just dies down till the next time. There is no good time.

Why does your right to own an assault rifle override the rights of these children to live?

I just said this EXACT thing to my husband as he was trying to calm me and convince me that the gun laws are never going to change because people won't give up their rights no matter what.

I am still just weeping and yet angry.

Thank you.

Because obviously the laws we have now ARE NOT WORKING. :(

Ok.

So what is your solution?

Put more laws that don't work on the book?

I'm not getting you here.

Thank you so very much. This post just lowered my blood pressure. I appreciate it. Coward is the word.

For heaven sakes I live in Philly and they sell guns out the back of cars for Lord's sake. Now who do we all think are buying them?

Why, why, why, why in days of old when people carried were they not going around shooting little children and the elderly and the innocent? What else is going on?

This is the "me" generation. Remember when Time magazine named us, or rather "You" as the person of the year? This is the the age of "omg I cut my wrists let me put it on tumblr" and "let me put 'I want to die' on Facebook and see how much concern I can drum up"

This is a generation with selfish, sick, deeply disturbed individuals who tout themselves as martyrs and commit terrible atrocities because of their own private pain and suffering or "suffering" (not to invalidate it but in comparison to their victim's pain...i digress). It's about "ME" and making "YOU" (society) suffer. These people are flying their troubles like a flag and punishing everyone in their path for it, and what's scary, is that there's many more people like that out there and something within our society is encouraging it. I have only harsh words for people who cry "poor me" and kill innocent people as some showy tribute to their not so golden childhood or whatever issues they have.

Ban knives, arson, cars, alcohol..........the list goes on an on.

IMO we as a society are going through a moral decay of sorts and it's showing.

Thanks, mysterygirl. My grandfather's murder was commited by a 🤬🤬🤬🤬 "with a gun".

Honestly I truly appreciate your post. His death effected two generations. It never goes away. It hurts me to hear "Well if there weren't guns he would...." Total BS. Those hoods were going to get them theirs no matter what.

My dad was a Detective/cop for 36 years and as far as I know he never shot anyone. We sure as heck never touched his firearm.

Again, it's a sad state of affairs.

BAN CARS! That will save many more lives including children's lives than all the other things put together.

cars and the people who continue to drink and take drugs (both prescription and illegal drugs) who kill our innocent little ones DAILY---)

Destiny-you deserved to be celebrating CHRISTMAS right now!! :(

Or is it just that our MSM reports it as they do? Respectfully, to insinuate that that US has, perhaps, more of this than other countries is incorrect.

And how many children are shot and killed when they find unsecured gun?

All that will happen is more schools will become little prisons. That is all that ever happens.

Do you have a link for that information?

A gun owner/supporter will always argue for freedom to own a gun, those who don't will argue no one should have them.
My opinion, had the mother not had legally registered firearms, she, those children and teachers would be alive.

The horror of what's happened today, and the situation as it unfolds, is uncannily reminiscent of the Dunblane massacre in Scotland, when 16 of our tots and their teacher were gunned down. Our kids were all in one room and the shooters' intention was clearly to kill them all as he was loaded down with ammunition. Thankfully there were survivors, some with serious injury and some saved by a teacher, who was shot, but was able to hide them under gym equipment in the cupboard.

It rocked our country to the core, and I wept for weeks. I'm so desperately sad watching all the reports today and reading you guys' posts and bewilderment with why it's taking so long to remove the little ones from the school. Although I accept the police were overwhelmed by the unprecedented level of horror encountered (in Dunblane), they also kept the parents of the dead and injured segregated in a room for FIVE hours without any information whatsoever. Then called out the parents of the injured tots in small groups at a time. The parents who were left knew their children must not have survived, and still they waited. I was in knots today hoping this wouldn't be happening to these heartbroken parents today, not that anything will make it any easier for them, but I'm glad to know they didn't have to endure that too.

It sent chills up my spine, if I could be chilled anymore today, to hear the Mayor say the words "Evil visited us today" - the very words the Principal of Dunblane primary used in his first words to media. The children were not removed until late into the night also, until forensics, ballistics, etc., were completed.

I believe Adam Lanza has now been officially named as the shooter. May he rot in hell. And may these precious little tots play together forever, wherever they are. So heartbroken for everyone concerned and send love from Scotland to all.

ScotAng, remember the Dunblane massacre well. A friend of mine William Sunderland sculpted the hugging seals marble memorial for them.. A tragedy/terrorist act, that should never happen in a civilized society, as is the CT elementary school massacre that happened today.. When will it end?

Two things:

1- there is a thread in the Jury Room regarding virus alerts. Please go there to discuss since that is not the topic of this thread

2- the Political Pavilion is currently closed, so I will open a gun law discussion thread in the Parking Lot. Please get off that topic ASAP and I'll link you guys up in a minute.

These are my emotions at the moment too. I am so sad, but enraged and it is probably the two most helpless emotions to feel at the same time. Helpless is the worst feeling in the world.

It's not about the guns, since the same thing happened today in China, just with a knife. They were five year olds. If he wanted to, he could have taken them out with his bare hands.

Even if it was the guns, who cares, at this point? In this case, right now, 18 little bodies are lying in a classroom, still waiting to be identified positively and laid to rest. There are Christmas trees all over that community with gifts under them that were lovingly picked and wrapped for children that will never open them. There are parents struggling to explain to older siblings and younger siblings, grandparents, and themselves what happened today and why it can never be undone.

More guns, fewer guns, more video games, fewer video games, less TV violence, more TV violence...none of these things matter to a mentally ill person that is set on violence. If he was going to kill 20 kids today, he would have done it with a butter knife if that was his only option. The only thing that could have stopped it was proactive measures from the school and proactive measures fro the mental health community.

MOO, but can we at least let their bodies cool before we start in with blaming the guns and TV and video games?

If I had a child that had mental problems I would keep my guns far away from his sight and locked down. You just never know.If he had no access to guns this would not have happened today.
