Not sure if anyone has posted anything like this yet (I cant read everything tonight). I received this link in an email from my childs school. She is 8, and she hasn't brought it up at all, which means she doesn't know. I don't want her to know. I don't see the point in her knowing. I know she can't be shielded from harsh reality forever, but for now I don't see why she can't. We don't watch the news, we don't live close by. So I don't see the point.
Anyways, here's the link to "talking violence" from the national association of school psychologists.

Sounds like some of the teachers were heroes.

Putting your body in between a killer and the children, knowing that it would probably mean death is pretty heroic in my book.

Dr. Drew's statement today was compelling: "Our culture is sick."

He went on to say change needs to happen with healthy homes, communities, and states -- that we need to address the divisiveness, because it's affecting individuals and resulting in tragedies like today.

I think it's tempting to think this is a trend, or somehow some behavior brand new to this time.

It isn't. There have been mass murderers, and serial killers since the dawn of time.

This is not a product of this generation, or this culture, or this mindset. It was seen often in Biblical times, too.

This is awful, but extremely rare. EXTREMELY rare for a child to be killed at school - but as with other extremely rare things, we focus all our attention.

For example, the "stranger danger" campaign. It is EXTREMELY rare for a child to be grabbed by a stranger and harmed, but we have focused our parental energy on keeping them away from strangers.

Similarly, we have focused our energy on keeping strangers out of our public schools after the Columbine incident, although that wasn't perpetrated by strangers and the extreme lock down measures we have instigated wouldn't have prevented Columbine.

This is a sad, sad rarity. It's grabbed the attention of the nation, and will surely be discussed and acted on in most school districts, to no avail. We'd be better off taking ALL this energy and putting it in to teenage drinking and driving prevention.

ITA. There is no need to frighten her about this. Shield her from this atrocity.

Police received multiple 911 calls from inside the school this morning (CNN live)

She is a victim, please leave her alone! What educated mother would give a weapon to her child without making them register it in their own name?????

First off, he wasn't a child. Gun laws dictate the age of the registrant. Alot of children, like my son, has a hunting rifle and it's registered in my name.

I cannot stop crying. I cannot watch any of the coverage. I sent hubby out for pizza and movies. I do not feel ready to have to explain to my 8 year old what has ocurred and I fear his catching sight of all this coverage.

How will I make him feel his school is a safe place? That he doesnt need to live in fear? When all I feel at the moment is fear and anger that the world is what it is?

Someone should start an emotional toll thread if one hasn't been already, for those like myself, too damned shellshocked to do anything beyond grieve and pray.

FYI"Sesame street released this helpful handout to help parents explain todays events to younger children....

Good. I think you're absolutely correct - if she hasn't heard about this, she doesn't need to know.

If she HAS heard about it, you can dismiss it with "that happened far away from here, and the person who did it is dead, and won't ever come near here ever ever. The world is shocked and sad this bad person did this, but he's now dead. Period.

I agree that all those with children should shield their children from what has happened today. As long as they don't have questions. IF they do have questions, you have to be prepared to answer them.

Thank you so much for your post Pensfan. I was desperately hoping I was doing the right thing, but I wasn't sure of my choice. Your post helped me feel much more concrete.
ETA:thank you to all of you. And rest assured, if she does have questions they will be answered. I just hope she doesn't have to know.

I talked to my daughter, who is in the 4th grade, about what happened. She said she knew what to do if someone came to school with a gun because they have already had two practice drills this year for that. My son in middle school said they had them as well.

I don't know if I should feel better knowing that their schools take this kind of thing seriously and informs the kids or feel sadness that my kids have to practice hiding under their desks and being quiet because it could happen,

Ok, Fox news is reporting the mother was killed off campus at her home. Why on earth would this guy kill her, then go to the school and kill all the kids? Pure Evil is the only reason I can think of.

It made a little more sense when it was reported that his mother was a teacher and he went to the school to specifically target and kill her, but then killed the kids as well, which will never make sense.

If he had a problem with his mother, why on earth couldn't he just stop after killing her?

Rita Crosby was talking earlier about who the other person was with the Mom.
She had talked with a neighbor that knew the family well. This person only knew of the 2-sons, not a 3rd one.

I am still not sure if this was a brother. But guss till I see LE say so, not sure what to belive at this point.
I am still searching for info to clarify if
a) there was actually another male victim found deceased in the home with mom?(as reported earlier)
b) if so, who this is?

anyone with further info, if even to clarify that this is deemed to be false please post.

Since they said he was in the woods and in camo but didnt say exactly where they found him I bet he was a hunter and not involved.

IMO
yes, this makes much sense imo.. and if true, bless him as well for I can't quite imagine what he went through in likely being surrounded, searched, and handcuffed til they could find out who he was and that he was an innocent bystander who IMO likely was not even aware of the horrific tragedy that'd occurred at the nearby elementary school..

I meant that the principal's last tweets were unrelated directly to today's events. IOW, she hasn't tweeted today.
the twitter acct is that of the principal:( who was among those shot and killed today..makes me sad to look at her tweets from 24 hours ago and how she was just like you and me living everyday life, getting her school wrapped up for the end of the semester, and likely looking forward to her upcoming Christmas break..just tragic in every sense and that's without even beginning to broach the subject of the babies that were taken today by this monster:furious:

When I was in 4th grade we had drills where he climbed under our desks and covered our heads in case if a nuclear attack. I remember my brother telling me that we would melt and stick to the floor if that ever happened, and i was so scared when we did those drills.
'
When my kids were little they did Earthquake drills and had to bring their own mini EQ kits to school every September. It scared my DD when I put hers together every year.

So I guess this is the new type of drill our kids will be doing.

I know when I went to pick up my son from school today, I briefly talked with a school administrator that works in the office. I asked her if she had received many calls today, she said no more than usual. Then I mentioned Connecticut and she replied they had a plan in place and it could never happen there.

I thought to myself, does she really believe that? I clearly see how easy it would be and sadly this is my son's school.

Charles Whitman, the shooter in the 1966 UT-Austin campus murders, first killed his mother and his wife.

He then went to the Tower and began further carnage.

There is some question whether the tumor in his brain would have caused him to do this.

I agree with this to a certain extent. IF a child has heard about this, then I believe a more detailed discussion about the security of their own school is really important. They'll need reassurance that their own schools are safe. Also, I think, IF a child already knows, that it is an important time to tell them how important it is to listen to their teachers instructions and to always do as they tell you. Especially in an emergency situation.

Children are a lot smarter than we think. They pick up on things. So it is important to be honest with them... IF they know what happened.

IF they don't know, then I say shield them too!

If you would like to mail sympathy cards or letters of support and solidarity to the school, the school address appears to be:
Sandy Hook Elementary School
12 Dickenson Drive
Sandy Hook, CT 06482

Sending a card is something small but at least it's something we can do.
