I guess I am the opposite. When my children got home today, I sat down my 4,6, and 8 year old and explained to all three what happened. We talked about staying safe, following directions, and stranger danger.

I really found no reason to shield them from it, as they were likely to hear about it sooner or later. JMO

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/14/us/connecticut-school-shooting/index.html

One parent who was in the school at the time of the shooting said she heard a "pop, pop, pop," sound around 9:30 a.m. In the room with her were Hochsprung, the vice principal and Sherlach. All three left the room and went into the hall to see what was happening. The parent ducked under the table and called 911.

"I cowered," she told CNN's Meredith Artley. The shooter "must have shot a hundred rounds."

Not posting that to discuss guns issue. Posting that to give facts about what happened as reported by witnesses.

Lanza's father, who lives in Connecticut, was similarly questioned, one of the law enforcement officials said.

It is not yet known how the gunman entered the school.

every visitor would be required to ring a doorbell at the front entrance after the doors locked at 9:30 a.m. and report to the main office to sign in.

Police began receiving reports of shots fired around 9:40 a.m. Friday.

Has it been mentioned if there was a LE officer in the school, I know here my children attend public schools an there is always a LE one or two in the schools throughout the day.

Ok, Fox news is reporting the mother was killed off campus at her home. Why on earth would this guy kill her, then go to the school and kill all the kids? Pure Evil is the only reason I can think of.

It made a little more sense when it was reported that his mother was a teacher and he went to the school to specifically target and kill her, but then killed the kids as well, which will never make sense.

If he had a problem with his mother, why on earth couldn't he just stop after killing her?
Maybe he was jealous of his mother giving her attention to her students, and not him?

I don't believe he was arrested CJ. I think he was taken for an interview?

I'm one of those who believe that evil is alive and well and is among us. This is such a gut-wrenching tragedy. I keep thinking about those children lying there dead most likely with no ID on their person. Without showing the parents a photo (hard to type this) how on earth are they going to ID these innocent little bodies? Photographs, hopefully provided by the school or the parent so that these parents will not have to look upon death photos. My heart is so sad for their tremendous loss.

AP has come out with a correction also and a little new information:

http://www.centurylink.net/news/read.php?rip_id=<[email protected]>&ps=1018

*Police shed no light on the motive for the attack on two classrooms. The gunman was believed to suffer from a personality disorder and lived with his mother, said a law enforcement official who was briefed on the investigation but was not authorized to discuss it.

*Law enforcement officials speaking on condition of anonymity said 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, and then drove to the school in her car with three guns, including a high-powered rifle that he apparently left in the back.....Authorities said he shot up two classrooms but otherwise gave no details on how the attack unfolded.

*A custodian ran through the halls, warning of a gunman on the loose, and someone switched on the public address system, alerting people in the building to the attack by letting them hear the hysteria apparently going on in the school office.

*Lanza's older brother, 24-year-old Ryan, of Hoboken, N.J., was being questioned, but the law enforcement official who said Adam Lanza had a possible personality disorder said Ryan Lanza was not believed to have had any role in the rampage......Investigators were searching Ryan Lanza's computers and phone records, but he told law enforcement he had not been in touch with his brother since about 2010.

*"He said, `Guys! Get down! Hide!'" Varga said. "So he was actually a hero." The teacher said he did not know if the custodian survived.

*"You go to a movie theater in Aurora and all of a sudden your life is taken," Columbine principal Frank DeAngelis said. "You're at a shopping mall in Portland, Ore., and your life is taken. This morning, when parents kissed their kids goodbye knowing that they are going to be home to celebrate the holiday season coming up, you don't expect this to happen. I think as a society, we need to come together. It has to stop, these senseless deaths."

THESE WERE MY EXACT THOUGHTS ONCE LEARNING THAT MOM HAD ALREADY BEEN MURDERED AT HOME AND THEN HE STILL PROCEEDED TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL..

IMO QUITE CERTAIN THAT THIS IS THE ISSUE IN THIS SICK INDIVIDUALS MIND:furious:

Great question! They are called Resource Officers. I know that we had them in Middle and High School, but not in Elementary School. They do NOT have one on duty at my niece's Elementary School (I just learned this). :banghead:

This is horrible. Why are there no wounded?? Usually in events like these their are survivors that were shot, but it seems like everyone shot died. WTF did this monster do?? Did he make sure that everyone he killed died? OMG I can't even.

This has been dominating my thoughts, too. I just can't imagine. I'd step forward to ID my kid, as torturous as it would be, but with full knowledge there's no going back from that. That changes a person, even aside from the loss. Unimaginable.

Most schools require all students to wear their school ID's on a clip or lanyard. They were all most probably wearing them.

My kids school has a crisis bell. It's a drill and when the crisis bell rings they have to take immediate cover in the nearest classroom. They come home and talk about it from time to time. The teachers secure the door when the students get in the classrooms. So if a student is walking down the hall then they enter the nearest classroom and the doors are secured. They have provisions if the kids are outside for recess, in the lunchroom or gym. If children do not take cover in a classroom and are caught not trying to take cover then they get detention. It's taken pretty seriously. Just sharing.

At their last school they did that when there was a erroneous report of someone not belonging in the school having gained access. Immediate crisis bell and complete shutdown.

I'll never understand individuals who want to hurt people they don't even know, simply because they are angry or hurting. I guess I just have tunnel vision. I have been hurt and angry enough at someone that I actually had thoughts of wanting that person dead, but not once did it ever occur to me to take out innocent people who had never harmed me.

I saw it reported that he killed them execution-style.

I'll try to find a link.

You are right. And I will rest my opinions about this.

Thanks for the reminder that politics and ethics can wait until later.

This is about those little ones who died today. :(

Here, here. Most of us are on one end of the gun debate or the other, however I know that we are all hurting for these innocent young children and their loved ones, now faced with overwhelming agony and grief.

We are united by humanity, no matter what country with live in, no matter what our beliefs.

He either shot them all in the head or multiple times. :(

Lord have mercy! (a prayer)

Only 3 were taken to the hospital and only 1 has survived. Two of the children taken to the hospital have died. The rest of the victims were apparently dead on the scene. 18 children (2 children died at the hospital) and 6 adults. AL unloaded over 100 rounds into that school. We only have one shooting victim who is still alive at this time. No reports have been made on their condition, age, etc... since earlier today.
