I wish that the media were allowed to report that a shooting happens, but then they have to back off for say... 8 hours because NO ONE knows what's going on right away, and they'll just be reporting info that turns out to be wrong anyway.

I'd feel better about it if Lt. Vance specifically said what the hell he was referring to, and didn't just issue a blanket threat against internet speech in general.

For the last several weeks, a man in his early 20's has been coming up to my son's school (K-8) and "talking" with some of the kids as they are on the parking lot. The police have been called on different occasions but he always left before police got there. Last week, the same thing happened but a faculty member was able to get a license plate number. Police tracked him down, issued a summons for trespassing and spoke to his parents. Police advised him not to return but said there's not much more they can do. The principal also spoke to the parents and confirmed he is in his early 20's and is autistic and when asked why he was doing this, he apparently told his parents he was trying to "save the children". To me it sounds very ominous, but at the same time, it could all be very innocent. All of this happened before Friday, so it's not truly a copycat situation but it has me worried. Needless to say though, it has me unnerved.

I don't know. And is far as I know, giving out false information (lying) is only illegal if you are filing a police report or under oath.

You can't lie on an application, trade law, remember balloon boy, just goes on and on, a lot further than just police report and under oath.

Call LE now, and I bet that they are more on top of him then they were. JMO.

What has happened to the RIP thread for the victims? :(

Which laws make it illegal to give any information that doesn't come straight from the LE department?

"Connecticut General Statutes 53a-130a - Impersonation of a police officer: Class D felony " IF the "information" were presented as from an authoritative spokesperson from an LE source, then there IS a case. Beyond THAT, it is a strong reprimand to the media et al to revert to the traditional policy of verification before publication.

A reminder of "chain of command" was given that the CT State Police are the CHIEF investigators/scene commanders working WITH other agencies.

Intentionally or not, perpetuating false information obstructs the investigation. In this particular case, when you have all hands on deck, diverting resources to run down the origin or intent of the false information wastes time, energy and money.

So if people dont do it, they wont be prosecuted. Typically, at least in my experience, LE lets it go. In this case, they dont want to let it go. They want it to stop.

They are horror stricken and pissed off as well. They are dealing with multiple immense crime scenes and a huge number of victims. On top of that, they need to brief the media, threaten civilians who are perpetuating misinformation and deal with a presidential visit...not to mention the governor and the LT governor who have chosen to be on scene.

They have families. They have children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. They may know the families of the victims, and if Mom was a survivalist, you can bet they already know her. ATF is probably working these crime scenes as well-of course they want to know the origin of the weapons and whose hands touched them before AL did.

Hats off to them for all that they are doing and all they will be doing during this investigation. I hope they have love and support too. :(

JMO, I think it's at least theoretically possible that information that doesn't come straight from a LE source is not false.

Okay, I get all that but I don't think that giving information that doesn't come straight from LE is synonymous with fraud, threats, pretending to be somebody else or even giving false information or repeating rumors.
Exactly and witnesses are beginning to speak about their ordeal as well. NBC interviewed a few of the teachers on the Today show this morning. I found Vance to be strangely unforthcoming considering there are no other suspects in the case.

Stick to MSM, but read the substance of the report too. There is a difference between creating bad information intentionally and reporting erroneous information.

In an effort to get our news out there 24/7 many news agencies scour the internet for information and post what they find. There is no time or mechanism to fact check because the information has not been released yet by LE.

So for facts we need to stick to the reports by the Chief and DIRECT LE Quotes- not "sources say" or "LE says". Those comments have to be taken with a grain of salt and information will be proven true- or not-as the story evolves.

If an MSM site is reporting on a hoax site- leave it off the board. We don;t want to perpetuate and create fact from fiction.

HTH.

Thank you.

That is how I took Vance's statements regarding misinformation. The purposeful frauulent and threatening hoaxes are illegal. The MSM participation in perpetuating rumors, misinformation, etc is frustrating and not helpful to the investigation.

That is why Connecticut LE is so upset because of instead of everyone on these social media sites just saying this is awful or sorry they are spreading rumors which LE has to stop and read and make sure it's not a threat toward another school or towards someones life.

Cnn just reported that a church in Newtown has been evacuated because of some threat.

I am not that impressed with Vance. Afterall, as far as I know they still haven't released the name of the shooter or the name of the victim found at 36 Yogananda.

They really need to be more forthcoming. IMO.

LE appears to be entering the phase where it begins to imagine that the public has no right to information, and thus seeks to draw the blinds by categorizing all information as being somehow intrinsic to the investigation.

I would have to say at the center of this would be those people who are making an online presence in the shooters name & posting manifestos-

Rumor or error is unavoidable but intentional deception surrounding a case like this should be prosecutable.

CNN now reporting a church has been evacuated because of some type of threat... just unimaginable that these people have to endure more terror and uncertainty. I'm going to take wild shot here and say someone wants to disrupt the Presidents Visit.

reedus, I don't like the sound of this at all. Why not call an emergency meeting with as many parents and staff as you can, so that more vigilant steps are taken. He doesn't sound like a well balanced person to say the least, and if I were in your shoes, I would be extremely pro-active about this. Prayers for you and all involved.

My two cents-

Please be very very careful before you put out self identifying information on the WWW and on Websleuths. You have no idea who that fellow sleuther or guest is sitting behind that computer screen.

People on the fringe are getting off on all of the attention-dont make yourself a target for anything.
