Lots of comorbidities associated with autism spectrum disorders. But as always you can have any one of these and not have autism and vice versa. As a mother of a child on the spectrum, who is overly intelligent, yet socially awkward, the medias misinformation angers me. Imagine reading these supposed evils of autism, and having your five year old ask you to write him a note saying, "please, play with me." To show the kids in his class. He wants to have friends just misses the connection to make it happen. And even in kindergarten a socially awkward child is starting a world of pain and misunderstanding by both peers and adults..

Seems to me the press is focasing in on the Asperger Syndrome dxs making people think this was the cause of this tragedy. I feel for those of you have loved ones with this condition as I don't believe in my heart that has anything to do with it. Shooter may have had other issues,but I don't think it was that one that caused him to do what he did. Now a whole group of children who are already social ostracized will probably be treated like they have the plague.

FTR, I started attending college when I was 16. I took classes at the community college at night and on weekends while in my senior year of high school. That was almost 40 years ago, but all we had to do was get permission from the administrators. IMO, it's not that unusual.

That's why i think the quote is being misinterpreted or taken out of context. Maybe she was impressing upon the sitter that even though he was 9 or 10 he could not be unsupervised as most 9-10 year olds might and that he needed to keep an eye on him at all times.

There are no early reports of AL being violent or dangerous and from what we know about mom- she would have taken care in his supervision.

For all we know the intent of that statement (IF it is in fact accurate) was about protecting her son, not necessarily the babysitter.

Watching that video makes me jealous, it seems like they are really on top of everything and that is great, I just wish we could multiply that for every community. The school district my kids are in is lax at best and does not seem to be beefing anything up. I definitely will be addressing security concerns.

I used to say that about one of my sons who was just into everything all the time. I was at a party yesterday and my friend's grandson is the same way and I commented on it. Busy kids - some of them are!!!

My 11 year old has Asperger's and he summed it up pretty well, "Great. Now people have another reason not to like me. Please don't tell anyone else I have Asperger's."

I have read almost every single post of these last five threads about this horrific experience. My heart is heavy...I cannot begin to imagine what these parents and families are going through.
I have mentioned in other threads that I have two children on the spectrum...my daughter has Asperger's, my son PDD-NOS. One thing I have learned, and it's a trite phrase, but it is very true....if you meet one child w/ autism, you have met one child w/ autism. The actions of the shooter are his and his alone....I do not believe, if he did in fact have Asperger's, that it contributed to this attack. It's still a very confusing situation, and it's hard to know what to believe. If he was hyposensitive to pain or injury, that could be an indication of severe sensory processing issues. A lot of our kids do have sensory issues, but even those can vary from child to child.
My main concern in discussing issues related to autism/Asperger's, is that we be careful that generalizations not be made. I want there to be an open dialogue on understanding and reaching out to our kids, but I have the fear as a parent that a person will hear their diagnosis and reach conclusions that don't apply to my child at all. Our kids are as individualized as 'neurotypical' children...we just have to look for the best way to reach them. My personal opinion, and that is all it is, is that AL had other mental health issues that led to this tragedy. :moo:

It could just be that I have missed early press conferences
after incidents like this.

I believe each family has had an officer posted outside there home since this shooting happened.

If it was in the news that AL was completely healthy and sane we wouldn't think that all the sane people are going to commit mass murder.

People with diagnoses are always individuals, just as sane people are.

I agree. He is a mass killer who happened to have Asperger's and whatever else going on.

Precautionary as it may be.. there are kids now in those schools that are utterly terrified. I just can't imagine.

Kids and the teachers. It's not like they are going to giggle now and say "tee hee, it was just an umbrella". How terrifying for them.

I suspect that a lot of people are going to develop anxiety related heath problems.

You tell that boy of yours what I have told my son all along, I am SO THANKFUL that God gave me a boy with Aspergers! Watching him grow, sharing his continuing innocent outlook on life, the marvels of his intelligence...all of those things and much more have made me the happiest mom in the world!

I hear ya, Donjeta, believe me, I do. But, you and I are working from a place of being educated as best as we can about ASD. There will inevitably be those who only hear AL had Asperger's and hold fear and stigmatize those who live everyday with it. These children and adults already have difficulties in social situations.

I feel for anyone on the spectrum right now. Their already misunderstood and out of their control disorder has just had another stigma placed on it. That makes me sad.
