A mediator who worked with the couple recalled his mother saying she didn't like to leave him alone and that his parents went out of their way to accommodate him.

Marriage therapist Paula Levy said that during about 10 two-hour sessions, Nancy and Peter Lanza were respectful of each other and concerned about their son.

She says the couple told her that Adam Lanza, then 16-17 years old, had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder.

I thought that sort of thing was confidential. :waitasec:

This woman wrote a blog entry with the name of a recent mass murderer and said she was his mother. She directly linked her son with AL. What kind of self esteem or strength or state of mind can that kid possibly be getting there? The more I think about what this woman did, the more it just sickens me.

Brings to mind, with friends like these you do not need enemies....With mothers like this....

It is very difficult for anyone to deal with seriously mentally ill (I'm using the term loosely) on a day to day basis, much less alone. I couldn't have done it. Whatever method she used to cope and seek help obviously didn't work. Yes, having guns around is a serious error in judgement on her part. I worked in mental health hospitals for years. There was a reason we had our own security force. Sometimes we had to call the police as well. Frequently staff were attacked and injured. At other facilities nurses and physicians have been killed. NL had a lose/lose situation. MOO. She did what she could.

I observed the definition of dignity & strength in the family of NOAH POZNER! How the heck one composes much less manages to GIVE a eulogy for a 6 year old is beyond belief but Noah's Uncle Alexis did it....and with spurts of humor, matter of fact, calm and lots of sniffles within the congregation. Folks were nodding in agreement with the characterization of Noah, even his parents held tight and managed a bittersweet smile of memory. AND............in their grief, they wanted to acknowledge those folks who tried to help make this nightmare "easier" for THEM...WHAT CLASS!
I heard from another co-worker who attended JACK PINTO's service that the message of children's safety was powerful, that he is safe in God's Hands and children will be safer. She was overwhelmed by the youngsters in "N" (Newtown) pullovers showing support for the ADULTS!

AND..............there will be more to come..............

We made promises to "our kids" that we'd help them finish the journey home.

Call 9-1-1. If you don't live in an area with nearby emergency health care, you'll have to load the child into your care yourself and take them to such care.

JMO

and who do you think 911 transfers the phone call to?

Calling police is not the answer if the mother truly cares for the child. Doing so can cause the child to escalate in the presence of police. What does the mother expect the police to do? Shoot the child? Arrest him for terroristic threats? What does giving the kid a rap sheet accomplish that is worthwhile? Arresting and throwing mentally ill kids into youth facilities simply exposes them to other very troubled youth and violence can result. Cops aren't parents and are trained to protect themselves and will do so. Tossing a mentally-ill child into the criminal justice system accomplishes nothing worthwhile for the child but that's just my opinion.

The police are often the first responders for situations where a person is "out of control". Very often the police transport the person to the hospital for a mental health assessment. They cannot transport directly to a mental health facility unless there are legal documents to do so. The police don't point guns at everybody and they don't arrest everybody and lock them up and put them through the criminal justice system.

Police are the front line when somebody calls 911. Once they are there they assess the situation and can only put the family in touch with other services. Sometimes that is the catalyst for the family getting help.

But really, what the heck would you do? Who would you run to, where do you go? Who said he DIDN'T try to reach his family members? Im guessing he did try and call them all, getting no answer and no one to talk to, he jumps on facebook to defend himself, I find nothing odd about that.

I find it odd but I'm also of another generation.

In the city where I worked in mental health, the legal system didn't house their mentally ill patients with hardened criminals but worked with mental health officials to get them help whether inpatient or outpatient. As a matter of fact there was a special judge appointed to work these cases and he was excellent.

And then there is this, http://www.examiner.com/article/lib...fathers-of-two-mass-murderers-were-to-testify

The father of Newtown Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza is Peter Lanza who is a VP and Tax Director at GE Financial. The father of Aurora Colorado movie theater shooter James Holmes is Robert Holmes, the lead scientist for the credit score company FICO. Both men were to testify before the US Sentate in the ongoing LIBOR scandal. The London Interbank Offered Rate, known as Libor, is the average interest rate at which banks can borrow from each other.

Hoax. imo

Edited to add: People put up these sensational headlines, because it drives traffic to their sites. The sites often have ads on them. The more 'hits' and 'eyeballs' the more ad revenue the receive. Much like the ads on YouTube. The potential for ad revenue, has certainly changed the driver to create ever more sensational or trophy-name websites.

sometimes calling the police is the only way to get your loved one into the hospital. We live with my mother in law for a while. Her sister had paranoid schizophrenia. we call police on occasions to subdue her. only once did the police decide she needed to be taken into the hospital. My dh was the only person she trusted. He was able to convince her to sign papers to voluntarily admit herself by focusing on the one thing she kept complaining about. In order to subdue her my mother in law held her in a chair by her arms to keep her from leaving in the taxi she has called without of our knowledge. She kept telling dh that we hurt her arm. He told her she should stay at the hospital so they could did her arm, that maybe it was broken. Once admitted, they were able to get her back on her meds and she became stable. If she had not signed, they could not admit her at all, because she showed no suicidal thoughts and was not in danger of hurting others. She was a frail old woman. Im so glad that she felt safe with my husband.

I have not had time to page through all the posts so sorry if this is an old thought but anyway:

I am wondering if Mrs Lanza was into all the hype about 12-21 with the world ending. A disturbed kid could have bought into this and maybe felt he was doing his mom a favor by killing her before all the bad stuff, ditto for the kids at the school. He apparently shot her in the face while she slept so that indicates anger but maybe he had to do it that way because of how she was positioned.

I have to disagree! If an Aspie does something illegal and spends a night in a juvenile detention center, it can change that behavior like no other. I've seen it happen with both a juvenile AND an adult Aspie.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread - but I used to be very involved in seminars, IEPs for Aspies, law enforcement awareness, etc. I advocate behavior modification for Aspies. Very much. But not to the point where they are housed with hardened criminals that will pose a danger to them. A night in the pokey can really help them if handled correctly!

Thanks is not enough for your post! You are so right.

"Our teacher is dead": Neighbor took six young survivors into his home (AP)
NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) — Gene Rosen had just finished feeding his cats and was heading from his home near Sandy Hook Elementary school to a diner Friday morning when he saw six small children sitting in a neat semicircle at the end of his driveway.
---
"We can't go back to school," one little boy told Rosen. "Our teacher is dead. Mrs. Soto; we don't have a teacher."

Rosen, a 69-year-old retired psychologist, took the four girls and two boys into his home, and over the next few hours gave them toys, listened to their stories and called their frantic parents.

the rest is at the link above

Some chilling stuff.

I work for a pokey and I sure don't agree that it is worth the risk. It's a risk I wouldn't take for my own child because I've seen too many young men get worse once they are incarcerated. A juvenile detention center is filled with kids who are awaiting trial for some very violent crimes such as homicide or armed robbery. In my state, a child who is there with mental health issues would be placed in safe-keeping, i.e., isolated to the point they must take their meals in their cell and they are never there just for one night.

For those who visit the PP here, you'd know I'm not a big fan of President Obama...but my heart and prayers have been going out to him to stay strong and find the right words in dealing with this.

I love this, what he did that's in this link below. A little detail, but so meaningful to those at that school, etc.

Thank you, President Obama...I think he's been handling this with great grace.

DD- you don't remember me but we had some disagreements back in the day when I hung out in the Political Pavilion. It takes someone special to post what you did and many of us appreciate it. This is not something we should be partisan over. If there were more folks like you on your side of the political divide we'd be able to work out lot of issues. Let's hope some good can come..

I'm going to toss this out to you guys...

I'm wondering if the cause could be bullying? Kids with Asperger's have been known to be bullied and when they are in middle school it's really bad for them. My son was miserable daily during that time in his life and I can't post the things the kids said to him in middle school cuz I'd have to give myself a time out for the language. Perhaps this burned something in his brain that he couldn't come to terms with...

Thank you Kimster. That has been a question in my mind from the first moments I heard what had happened. I posted as such, in the first thread.

I've worked in corrections many years and I have yet to see our system have inmates as "outpatients." Once they are convicted, they are incarcerated with other psychiatric patients.

It's also sorta a moot point because I've seen no indication Mrs. Lanza asked police to in any way intervene with Adam.
