My husband and I work for a security software firm, he is a developer/architect. The first thing he said when I said how AL had destroyed the hard drive was "that shows me a fundamental lack of understanding of how hard drive technology works. Why didn't he just stick a couple magnets in there?"

Info on hard drives is stored magnetically. Even if he overwrote the whole thing with zeros and 1's, the info is still there. I'm beginning to wonder if he destroyed the hard drive in a fit to get his mother to back off. Perhaps she came home from her spa trip (preparing herself for what she knew was a conversation that wasn't going to be appreciated?) and when she told him where he was going or whatever, he knew the usual not speaking to her wouldn't work. So maybe the "you've made me so miserable I'm destroying my stuff!" attempt. And when that didn't work, he went further, etc. Doesn't explain the school at all though.

OT: If anything ever happens to me and they check my web history, oh the speculation my google searches will cause. Matricide! Jungle taping! Birth order + manipulation! I look like a wacko out of context :)

The world mourns with Connecticut; gifts pour in

By PAT EATON-ROBB and JESSE WASHINGTON, AP
31 minutes ago

NEWTOWN, Conn. — People around the world are grieving with the residents of Newtown over the murders of 26 school children and staff, offering their support by sending toys, money and other gifts.

An outpouring of tens of thousands of teddy bears, Barbie dolls, soccer balls, board games and more has come from toy stores, organizations and individuals worldwide.

"It's their way of grieving. They say, `I feel so bad, I just want to do something to reach out,'" said Bobbi Veach, who was helping Saturday at Edmond Town Hall, where all of Newtown's children were invited to choose a toy.

After the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre Dec. 14, victims were still being buried Saturday. A service was held in Ogden, Utah, for 6-year-old Emilie Parker. Others were held in Connecticut for 7-year-old Josephine Gay and 6-year-old Ana Marquez-Greene...

That's beautiful; thanks for sharing that BetteDavisEyes.

Makes me wish that every young victim of senseless murder and their families received such an outpouring of love (thinking of the countless kids killed here in Chicago whose faces we'll never see, names we'll never know...) and I wonder if there was such an outpouring of love & support if these far too frequent, completely senseless acts of murder would be significantly reduced....

Was she still getting child support? Adam was an adult.
She was getting almost $300,000 in alimony until 2023. Do you think she was also getting child support?

Smashing hard drives doesn't seem like a mom thing to do to me, and not really an enraged thing either, it's more a techno-nerd destroying information thing imo. It takes some effort to physically extract the hard drive and destroy it separately. I could see a frustrated, angry mother throwing the whole nine yards in the dumpster, locking it in the garage or threatening to donate it to a charity or something but not disassembling the computer into its component parts before destroying it. Particularly not if she wasn't used to building computers from scratch and familiar with the parts.

I agree. The average person doesn't even know which internal components are which once they get a peek inside a computer. I remember the first time my partner took our computer apart to upgrade the RAM & the CPU (as I watched over his shoulder hoping to learn a thing or two about that mysterious machine). I couldn't tell one part from another until he pointed them out to me. I think most folks are like me - that's why the Geek Squad is rakin' in the dough lol.

But AL would have known exactly which part was the hard drive, and he would have known how to remove the cover & smash it to bits, based on reports regarding his genius with computers. If the stories we've heard are true about his prowess with computers - he could have probably had that thing apart & destroyed in no time flat.

I just went back and reread thread 1. There was so much misinformation that was being posted because of all the confusions of the media reports. I hope that something is said soon to give us some answers into AL mindset and physcical condition and I hope that RL and PL speak out. It is understandable that they are grieving now. I am also hoping they had been in contact with NL and can share what she might have been through. I really do not believe all that is written by acquaintances..it is just hearsay to me.
Another thing that has bothered me is PL not knowing what happened that day until a reporter told him in his driveway. I would of thought that someone in his workplace would of heard the news that day whether through internet or smart phone use. The Lanza name was all over the place the day of Dec 14th.

School Districts are not responsible for home schooling students, unless they are home schooled through a school district. Here's a reference http://www.hslda.org/laws/

I am disagreeing with this statement from your earlier post This is simply not the job of a school district.

MyBelle
Quote: If a parent withdraws a child to homeschool, the public educational system should still follow him to determine if such a move meets his needs and welfare.

A child was removed from our public school system by her parents in gr 4, we found out a few weeks later that the parents said they were going to homeschool her. An extended family member called and questioned the removal of her from school. We could not give her any info as she was not the parent. This family member did not believe the parents were capable of homeschooling her, we advised her to call authorities as there was nothing we could do about it. She called , the family was investigated and they told authorities everything that they wanted to hear... fast forward to today, the girl is now 18 years old, no education took place at home, she has no social skills, no friends, no job and is unable to get a drivers licence as you need to have your GED to do so in this area.

The bottom line is, the system is way to relaxed when it comes to homeschooling. This child received zero education at home, the parents lied and there was nothing the school, or the concerned aunt could do about it.

The government needs to make the changes to correct this.

As for AL, he did receive his GED, so this homeschooling issue is not a concern with this case.

Noniegrace, thanks for those most interesting insights and sharing the you and your husband's industry-knowledge with us.

After reading your post I did a quick Google (trying to see how hard would it be to find out how to destroy a hard drive) and there are way too many folks in the world who must feel the need to destroy their hard drive bc the results were endless....

With that in mind, I thought I'd share a new article from Popular Mechanics written with the shooter's hard drive in mind: How To Read A Smashed Hard Drive: http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/how-to/computer-security/how-to-read-a-smashed-hard-drive-14877558

Thank you so much for your useful input regarding computers!

Maybe AL didn't have any magnets in the house?

Most people don't have a couple of magnets in the house. If FBI can not recover any information from AL's hard drive, then it would appear he did a good job destroying it. I am not sure regular magnets would work on a modern computer anyway.

"The same goes for hard drives. The only magnets powerful enough to scrub data from a drive platter are laboratory degaussers or those used by government agencies to wipe bits off media. "In the real world, people are not losing data from magnets," says Bill Rudock, a tech-support engineer with hard-drive maker Seagate. "In every disk," notes Rudock, "there's one heck of a magnet that swings the head.""

Yeah he may have posted there. IDK

His FB page has comments from others. Some supporting him and some nasty ones.

He must be going through a difficult time so I can't really judge him.

IMO

~n/t~ wanted to update you and folks on the NY Post article I shared earlier this morning featuring comments from Ryan Lanza:
The story just went live on TMZ so if there are any inaccuracies, we'll definitely hear about it shortly.

School districts are already responsible. The school district is paid for by taxpayers and children do have a legal right to a public school education while they are minors. Public schools ARE a government entity.

I'm sure that it might differ from state-to-state, but in Michigan children who are home-schooled are supervised by their local school districts. Educational materials, lesson plans, evaluation tools, etc. are provided to parents who have ongoing contact with district personnel. Michigan requires all children to be educated from ages 6-16.

That image supposedly of AL has brown eyes and was taken of RL's facebook. I presume that is RL, not AL. On an internet, anyone can pretend to be RL.

True - most folks don't have magnets laying around the house.

Yes - AL obviously did a good job of destroying the hard drive, because even the experts @ Quantico can't put it back together (according to recent reports).

For all we know (which is very little), he MAY HAVE actually swiped the surface of the hard drive with magnets, and then smashed it for good measure. At any rate - it's toast.

Am I the only one who is skeptical about the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN Spa Trip story?

As I mentioned Saturday morning I did a thorough examination of the local and national reporting about Nancy Lanza's alleged spa trip and they all seem to be based on the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN report. Yesterday I linked to the hotel's refusal to comment and while I am aware of the unnamed "friends" comment's about Nancy's trip, I wonder if after the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN news went viral if it just became well-accepted common knowledge that an acquaintance who knew she was from/loved NH might have no problem saying "I heard she was at the resort in NH".

Also, if it can be determined that the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN tidbit about Nancy's trip is true; is there any evidence that the shooter (who by most accounts was the type of person you wouldn't even know was in the room) did not go on the trip with Nancy? And if the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN tidbit is true and we learn that the shooter DID go on the trip with Nancy, might there have been an explosive argument on the drive back to CT which was the proverbial spark that ignited the powder keg?

I replied to your post before you added the extra bit of info.

So there you have it: it takes a powerful magnet to erase a hard drive. TY jenny!

I really don't think she was taking 6 feet tall 110 pound AL (assuming the sources are accurate on that) on vacations with her. Reports say she went alone and he stayed home.

"Just before the shooting, Nancy Lanza was on vacation alone at a luxury resort in New Hampshire, friends said Wednesday."

jjenny: I understand it is widely reported however in my deep research of the origins of this report and all other media's reporting of the alleged trip, EVERYTHING ties back to the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN tidbit. There is no independent confirmation of this trip from another source and when media attempted to confirm this with the hotel and the hotel's spokespeople they were unable to confirm this trip.

I would be grateful beyond words if you or someone might be able to share an independent confirmation by another published or broadcast report that does not tie back to the Rita Cosby reporting for CNN tidbit; I've been tirelessly trying to find it myself but all roads lead to Rita Cosby in my search.

This is a powerful comment/opinion piece from the Guardian, a British national daily newspaper; I understand that everyone who chooses to read might not agree with the writer's words but her writing is impactful and powerful:

The scapegoating of Nancy Lanza
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/dec/23/no-tears-nancy-lanza-newtown-mother

I fully agree with that article. Has anybody blamed James Holmes' mother? What about the Norwegian shooter, can we find an excuse to blame his mother? I think the family, and especially the mother, are being scapegoated here because Adam Lanza is dead and we can't exact any justice from punishing him.
