I read somewhere that in China they put an electronic monitor on each persons door.

The electronic monitoring like an ankle bracelet but on the door? gotcha.
What about in the USA?
I've searched and only found they were suggested to self-isolate after coming in contact with the virus. That's not very comforting.
The word suggested does not seem to mean you must self-quarantine.

Question. Forgive me for forgetting. What type of gloves are best to purchase for going out when needed? MOO
I use the nitrile gloves. They can be found at CVS, if still available.

So, for those being quarantined at home, who exactly is keeping tabs on these people? Anyone? Is there a process or will there be. So many questions and so little trust and complete answers. MOOOOO

I don’t know about the US but in Canada these people are called twice/day by their local health units.

BBM. This isn't true in the U.S. The quarantine of the Diamond Princess was ineffective and was the responsibility of Japan.
About half of the U.S. cases are from the Diamond Princess. There was no slowness to the crisis from U.S. officials. The hundreds of American evacuees from the Diamond Princess were on charter flights and they were immediately isolated when their planes landed in the U.S. They did not enter the terminals at airports, they were transported immediately by highly-trained infectious disease medical personnel to their isolation/quarantine locations.

I'm not talking about the ship....
I'm talking about the home grown cases that we are finding now that transpired weeks ago....
The folks from the ship are the least of our worries....they were in quarantine....

Ok, Dr John Campbell here says the UK government is expecting a pandemic there to be 2-3 mo from community transmission to peak, then 2-3 mo more. It's around the 10 min mark in the video. 4-6 months?? Ok, suddenly I'm feeling way more freaked out and doubting my food and tp supply. How long has Wuhan been in quarantine now? Is it like 6 weeks already?

I like the Nitrile blue colored ones because they are so easy to put on, and they dont leave a powdery residue on your hands.

If you use the typical white colored Latex ones, you will probably be noticed less, but I am joining others in not worrying about what other people think if I decide to try to be safe from germs.

Oh, they apparantly come in all colors according to this link, so you may be able to find Nitrile gloves in the color of your choice.

ETA - They dont tear nearly as much either. When I had used the normal Latex ones, I end up ripping them a lot of times when I try to put them on. Nitrile gloves hardly ever rip or tear on me.

Thousands of patients in intensive care will be tested for signs of the coronavirus amid fears that it is circulating among units treating people who are seriously ill.

NHS bosses have ramped up their efforts to detect the virus by ordering all 135 acute hospital trusts in England to routinely test anyone in intensive care units (ICUs) who has a breathing problem.
They are worried that people who are already very sick in hospital with different illnesses could be infected with the virus by a fellow patient.

The plan is a direct response to the detection of Covid-19 in patients in intensive care units in Europe whose illness cannot be traced to any of the areas where the virus is circulating, such as northern Italy. Staff working in these units have also contracted the virus.

I would really like to believe this, but I’m not sure this would really explain what happened on the Diamond Princess would it??

Thanks for reminding me! I read a paper last night that was the first published one I've gotten an alert on with google scholar.

Estimation of the reproductive number of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the probable outbreak size on the Diamond Princess cruise ship: A data-driven analysis - ScienceDirect

Estimation of the reproductive number of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the probable outbreak size on the Diamond Princess cruise ship: A data-driven analysis

Highlights
•The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pneumonia has caused 355 confirmed cases on the Diamond Princess cruise ship as of February 16, 2020.
•We estimated that the Maximum-Likelihood (ML) value of reproductive number (R0) was 2.28 for COVID-19 outbreak at early stage on the ship.
•If R0 value was reduced by 25% and 50%, the estimated total number of cumulative cases would be reduced from 1514 (1384-1656) to 1081 (981-1177) and 758 (697-817) as of February 26, 2020, respectively.
e.d. Interesting, as in the end, there were a total of 705 infections total from the ship. therefore they are saying it could have been a ~50% reduction in the initial R0 of 2.28 to a later R0 of 1.14.

It's all Greek to me, but I had said in thread #2 that I was doing an alert for the Princess Cruise ship and would share if I got one.

With immune deficiency and auto immune disease, I am already used to self isolating from large crowds and shopping at odd hours when pharmacies are closed, October to March. I've been doing this since 2008!
So this year I'll self isolate longer!
I have 9 whole members in my family. 3 are 2 hours away.
I'm a little too used to it!!
Moo
I have an auto immune too. And an 8 year old despite my age- Ahem, I mean, wisdom :) So if it comes to her school, it's coming to my home. That said we've never had a Spring Break vacation her whole life, finally planned one and kiddo has her heart is set on it. Indoor water park in Colo Spgs. Idk ginger, I wasn't thrilled about a large enclosed crowd with kids w germs in the first place but I'm getting cold feet about going. No clue on what is best.

OK Folks I foresee another small problem in our
war on the Cvirus.
Since CDC seems to be sweeping most of the testing back onto the individual state labs, we may have an upcoming problem in my state of Fl.
Fl. has appx 22 million residents. We have a total of 3 approved labs in the state to run tests.
A reporter just asked our Governor if the state is planning on setting up more local labs to expedite testing. Gov. answered, "No, you're
looking at that taking several months to do".

OK, 22 million people and if 60% of population gets the virus, that's 13 million tests to confirm.
With 3 labs that's 4.3 million tests per lab.
Over a 30 day period, if the virus explodes that would mean each lab has to handle 143,300 tests per day to keep up. Slow it down to a 60 day period and you still have 72,000 tests per day for each lab to run to keep up.

Can I volunteer to call my Gov. to see what he's smoking? Does this sound like adequate planning to
protect our residents as our leaders tell us?
Oh boy, are we in for problems.
someone please tell me I'm wrong or I won't be able to sleep till you tell me.

Huge announcement.

I’m still in the last thread but had to come here to say:

It seems I’ve been recruited out of retirement to teach online overseas.

The urgent international call came a few minutes ago.

I can not tell you how DESPERATE they sounded. They are offering me TOP pay. They want me to start tomorrow lol.

Wow my life just changed.

I’m overwhelmed with emotion. Tears.

I will be on the front lines with these kids.

I was reading a Vox article....."The coronavirus exposes the history of racism and “cleanliness " While the epidemic may be new, xenophobia has been intertwined with public health discourse for a very long time."

Scrolling through this thread I do not see one post, yet, where anyone discusses the moral implications and how pharmaceutical companies are probably gearing up to make a vaccine that they will claim "Everyone should get" and everyone will run out and do it. The Pharmaceutical industry is known for gaining huge profits in cases of "epidemics" and also cases of "pandemics."

I am not seeing any sense of care for the citizens of China at all in any post.

I care deeply for the citizens of China and my first post - ever- on Websleuths was in defense of the Chinese and Chinese society. I have major concerns about the Chinese government, but not the Chinese people.

I read that Latex or Fibrile gloves work best.

Before I go back to the last thread, I want to say holy moly healthcare workers are getting infected like crazy, so many countries including domestically. I’m so worried about this.

I have many comments and responses to all the posts but NEED to get caught up.

After that my time here may be limited as I will be back to work.

Wow just wow.

RBBM. No, it doesn't. This is what we get when we allow public services and science to be vilified and dismantled. Cannot tell you how unsettled I am after watching the pharmaceutical/Coronavirus response team meeting footage from today in DC.

Yeah. It was a small device, white in color and there were sections on each side of the door they pictured.

I've not read anything about monitoring in the US.
