Drug shortage fears as India limits medicine exports

There are fears of global shortages of some common drugs after India limited the export of certain medicines due to the coronavirus.

India's drug makers rely on China for almost 70% of the active ingredients in their medicines.

Industry experts have warned that manufacturers are likely to face shortages if the epidemic continues.

On Wednesday, India - the world's biggest supplier of generic drugs - has restricted exports of 26 ingredients and the medicines made from them.

The restricted drugs include Paracetamol, one of the world's most widely-used pain relievers.

Bought a bottle of tylenol. I'd like to know what else was being restricted. It only listed a handful including B12.

COVID-19 action plan:
1. Wash your hands properly and frequently
2. Sneeze into your elbow/sleeve, dont use your hand
3. If you have a fever or cold, don’t travel and don’t do things that put other people in danger
4. Don’t get into fights at supermarkets over toilet paper

The Chicago State University men's basketball team says it won't travel for two games this week, and its women's team will not host two games, the school says. They appear to be the first major sports event cancellations due to the coronavirus.

I still like the "water jug" idea. No mask? No problem, covers eyes, ears, nose and mouth at once!

Health authorities are trying to figure out how a Westchester County lawyer who works in Manhattan contracted the novel coronavirus when he hasn't traveled to an area where the outbreak is widespread.

His son, a student at Yeshiva University in Manhattan, tested positive for COVID-19, the school said in a statement Wednesday. He had been symptomatic prior to his father's hospitalization.
Snipped.

I'll make a wild guess on how the father and son caught the virus - this is SPECULATION ONLY.

Yeshiva University is located in a neighborhood with a big Dominican population. There are very close ties between the community and the Dominican Republic and travel between the two places is common. There has been a case in the Dominican Republic - he was a tourist there from Europe, iirc, but someone in DR could have caught the virus and brought it to NYC. (And it's possible if DR isn't testing widely, there is more than one case in DR.)

The student at Yeshiva possibly encountered the virus in the neighborhood, at a bodega, on the subway or bus, etc. And then spread it to his dad.

Again, this is not fact, just experience with the area and a HUNCH.

This is what started my concern about restaurants, bbm:

"...China has a new worry: that Chinese nationals returning home from trips overseas, or foreigners visiting the mainland, will bring the infection with them.

So far, there have been 15 confirmed imported cases, nearly half involving a group of Chinese people who worked at a restaurant in the northern Italian city of Bergamo"

China worries about new coronavirus surge from infected arrivals

Thank you for this as it shows I have valid concerns and at no point have I told other people what to do.

My daughter is an emergency room nurse in Ohio. I am really worried for her. I don't think there are any cofirmed cases there yet, but it is only a matter of time.

READ THIS.....china was able to flatten the curve....

Helen Branswell

1. South Korea reported another +500 #Covid19 cases today & +4 deaths. They bring the counts there to 5328 cases & 32 deaths.
That outbreak is growing steadily. No flattening apparent. Helen Branswell on Twitter

2. Some people were asking recently about demographic breakdown of the cases in Korea. They've started publishing some in their daily updates. Scroll to the bottom of the page. No deaths in anyone <30 yo there to date. Helen Branswell on Twitter

2 Yeshiva University students in self-quarantine due to coronavirus

Two Yeshiva University students are in self-quarantine as a precaution after potential exposure to coronavirus.

A Westchester County attorney in his 50s — is the father of a male undergraduate student at Yeshiva.

Another student at the university’s Cardozo Law School is “in self-quarantine as instructed by their doctor, as a precaution because of contact with the patient’s law firm.” The student is asymptomatic.

Three Jewish day schools in New York — SAR Academy, Westchester Day School and Westchester Torah Academy — closed on Tuesday due to possible coronavirus exposure.

I confess I am curious what the situation is like in Russia. I also know it's highly likely the citizens (and the rest of the world) are not being correctly informed. JMO

1/n We have window of opportunity to sharply alter trajectory of a U.S. #coronavirus epidemic by local officials taking forceful mitigation steps in areas of known outbreaks like Santa Clara, Washington State. Singapore, Italy, South Korea took bolder steps at similar juncture.
Scott Gottlieb, MD on Twitter

He's using the wrong words... shouldn't it be containment, isolation and contact tracing at this point?

I honestly don't think that anyone is actually being "correctly" informed.
