I hear ya. Last week if you told me that people at a business meeting would touch elbows instead of shaking hands, I would have burst out laughing at how dumb that is.

But, that's what I experienced yesterday and not only was everyone on board with it, there wasn't even a conversation about it. Everyone just bumped elbows and proceeded as if we all just shook hands. (But as someone here pointed it, might not be a good idea if people are also sneezing into their elbows.)

Fast moving times. Cultural change in three days.

A namaste bow works even better. No touching of any body parts.

Immunity to each virus, each strain of virus, each bacteria, etc has to be built one-by-one by exposure to *it*, not to others.

So, although that thinking appears to be popular (especially with anti-vaxxers) I don't see how it can be correct.

No one (other than 100,000 or so in China) on this planet has immunity to this particular strain of coronavirus. The only way to get immunity is by contracting it.

And that is the glass half full scenario where the immune system can hold the immunity long-term and the virus doesn't mutate too much or into too many strains before they have enough vaccine to do mass immunisations.

I don't normally use anti-bacterial handwashes and things as I believe most bacteria will wash off the hands with soap and hot water and a good rub. The antibacterial ones tend to leave my hands sore, which I believe could be due to killing off the 'good' microbes on the skin along with the 'bad' ones. But I don't think that practice is going to help me avoid or successfully fight off the Covid-19.
I've never been a user of hand sanitzer either - bought my first mini bottle just last week. I've always been told (and believe) that hand washing is more effective anyway - and I really try hard not to buy stuff in plastic bottles that I really don't need.

I still think hand washing is better....BUT I don't always have access to a sink. So, for now, while the virus is known to be in my city, I'm using sanitizer when not near a sink.

But, the more and more I think about the #1 habit to get into is don't touch your face. I'm putting a lot of concentration on not touching my face.

Time for desperate measures by our government.

Dang it. Declare martial law for a month.
No flights international or domestic
No passenger trains
No long distance buses or city buses
No taxis
Close all schools and universities
No sporting events
No concerts
No mega church services. (God will hear you praying from home.)
No amusement parks
No conferences

We do not need daily reports on where the virus has spread, how many are affected, or how many died. We have been informed to wash our hands and keep them away from our face. And we know a vaccine is a year or more away.

We need action. Yes. There will be yelling and screaming, "You can't do this." Better a drastic solution than allowing movements and more deaths. People will get over it.

The scourge might be that antibiotics were overused in the 1980s until warnings of antibiotic over-use to treat viruses (rather than bacteria) was leading to stronger viruses. It was warned that eventually viruses would become too strong for antibiotics. Are we there yet?

Yes, but it was the bacteria that would no longer respond to antibiotics. The worry was that things like MRSA would emerge.

Viruses aren't affected by antibiotics, it won't cure a viral infection and it won't make the viruses worse.

Ugh.... already 10 pages behind again!!

Where’s the “PAUSE BUTTON??”

I have to step away today to tend to things recently neglected due to my NEED to keep up with this thread!

Everyone continues to provide new and relevant information at lightning speed, and I hate skipping a single post!

I hate the fact that a simple bathroom break can throw me behind! But I can’t express enough how much I appreciate this thread, and all of you that have contributed in SO many ways!!

Looking forward to all of the invaluable updates upon my return! Just hoping I won’t need to take up speed reading to get caught up! lol

And a special thanks to @Henry2326 for his/her nonstop commitment to keeping us updated with so much incoming information!

ETA - I’m starting to believe that @Henry2326 is actually AI !!

Because he/she is a POSTING MACHINE!!!

ETA 2 - 12 pages behind! Double Ugh.....
SAMS is right there with me....thanks SAMS!!

Cuomo said he expects the number of confirmed cases will continue to grow.

“If you understand the facts, there is no reason for undue anxiety,” Cuomo said. “There are going to be dozens and dozens and dozens of people. And the more people you test, the more people you’re going to find.”

Cuomo also said that CUNY and SUNY students who were participating in study abroad programs in China, Italy, Japan, Iran and South Korea were being recalled. They’ll return on a chartered plane and be quarantined in dormitories for 14 days, Cuomo said.

Microsoft is allowing and encouraging its employees to work from home as the novel coronavirus outbreak continues to spread in countries around the world. The software giant has updated its guidelines for employees, allowing anyone based in Seattle or San Francisco to work from home through March 9th. Microsoft is also recommending that those who are feeling sick, have a compromised immune system, or have had contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19 (the disease caused by the novel coronavirus) shouldwork from home.

Not sure if this recent news has been shared but it surprised me a lot.

Turns out there is a case in North Carolina now, but get this. The person caught it from the same affected Life Care Nursing Home way over in Washington state and flew on a plane to North Carolina. So now everyone on the plane could have been in contact with the infected North Carolina person. Also whoever this person went to stay with in NC.

"The first presumptive case of the novel coronavirus in North Carolina is linked to a Seattle-area nursing home facility where five residents were sick and later died, authorities in the Tar Heel state said Tuesday.
The new patient is from Wake County, home to Raleigh and 1.1 million people. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said the person was exposed at a center in Washington where there is a Covid-19 outbreak while on a trip.

A nursing home in the Seattle area is at the center of the US coronavirus outbreak
That facility is the Life Care Center in Kirkland, northeast of Seattle, where county and federal officials are trying to determine how the disease got there and watching many of the more than 200 people who lived or worked there for signs of coronavirus.

I have a question about this, and I might never see the answer as I keep having to skip threads as they're moving too fast!

But.... most cases seem to be caught by close relatives/people living close together. Do we know much about transmission outside of 'living together', wherever that might be? I remember hearing about one or two taxi/Uber drivers in Japan contracting it? Have we heard of any cases that were definitively contracted on a plane?

I've not....but....there may be some contact investigations that indicate it and it's not been shared....

I think at this stage a polite verbal greeting should be fine for anything official. I'm liking the namaste bow suggestion too.

The US coronavirus death toll is rising and the CDC says communities should start thinking about ways to stop its spread
By Christina Maxouris, CNN
Updated 11:04 AM EST, Wed March 04, 2020

CNN)As the US death toll from the coronavirus climbed to nine, the CDC said it has "heightened" concerns and urged local communities to begin thinking about ways to stop the virus from spreading.

"As more areas see community spread, local communities may start employing tools that encourage social distancing," Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said in a Tuesday news conference. "The goal of social distancing is to limit exposure by reducing face-to-face contact and preventing spread among people in community settings."

I’m disappointed in one of the local hospitals where my daughter works. The memo sent out yesterday by the administration says, “where it bleeds it leads and to keep that in mind. Media needs all the clicks and subscribers they can get so Don’t believe the hype!”

And yet it’s not the media we are listening to. It’s actual statements from the WHO, CDC and health czars from around the world.
