(Dear mod, please delete if not allowed)

Question for those watching all this on SM in the US (no specific SM rumors or content references please per TOS):

I’m not on SM, but have been wondering “what it’s like out there” generally atm. How concerned are people overall in your opinions? Do we in here represent a unique group of being overly prepared and concerned people, or are there a lot of others who are as concerned as us, talking about supplies, etc.? Is there a lack of concern by many who are stuck on this “ it’s just the flu” mentality? Perhaps concern is evolving as more cases are diagnosed? Perhaps it varies in different regions? Are there people arguing as usual, insulting each other? It’s it mad out there? Total chaos? Is there a whole bunch of misinformation floating around as usual? Thanks for your thoughts and opinions. Again, please just give a general assessment on this without bringing over anything from SM, so as to not violate TOS.

Interesting. I wonder how many other cases out there have not been diagnosed.

Remember, this is not a pandemic. There are no cases in Antarctica, yet. (Of course).

Just wash your hands, carry on, nothing to see here.

The company I work for has clinics in 30 states. We are NOT seeing patients who exhibit CV symptoms or who have traveled outside of the country in the past 30 days.

Clinic staff have instructions to hand the patient a mask and direct them to the nearest ER.
Gee, would be nice if we had centralized coordination of information....wonder how that could be put in place?

Sigh.

On Thursday the NT News, the Darwin-based newspaper with a national reputation for its headlines and antics, printed a special eight-page insert that can be cut into toilet paper.

Its editor, Matt Williams, told Guardian Australia the paper was selling well and was “certainly not a crappy edition”.

“We are a newspaper known around the world who understands the needs of our readers,” he said. “Territorians … are in great need of toilet paper right now so we had to deliver what they needed.”

The stunt comes after supermarkets including Coles and Woolworths have been besieged by shoppers clearing their shelves of loo paper and hand sanitiser.

That's the opposite advice I've heard in USA. DON'T go to the ER but to your regular doc.

jmo

And the US shouldn't even be telling people to go to their doctor! It's crazy, how would you like to be a patient in the waiting room waiting for your annual checkup, and you're sitting next to someone who just called or stopped by with possible highly contagious virus symptoms.

We need something in place, I believe in the UK, that you dial a certain number and someone there helps you and they COME TO YOU, or provide drive-through service so you don't even have to get out of your car.

It's ridiculous that no one is telling these people in the US what to do.

I thought about that also. Thank goodness I have a droid phone that has google tracker on it so I can merely go into such to find where/when I was. (Learned about that from WS in a case!) I think that's what the Chinese were using an app for to trace contacts (and monitor movements of some?)

I never knew how communist China was until this outbreak. I still can't believe I tried to push my daughter to teach English there. I am so glad so didn't and just ended up doing online teaching for a few months.

China also follows people and monitors posts and purchases via WeChat and WePay.

I couldn't agree with you more.

A huge interest of mine is communication and how it is distributed, and boy, this is a case study for that.

There is really NO EXCUSE WHATSOEVER that the communication is not clear from authorities. We should not have questions at this point about cost or about what to do if we think we might have the virus. This situation did not arrive here last week. The world has known the potential since January. An effective communication plan (and testing plan!) could have been set up far sooner than now.

I'm so disappointed, but eager and ready to change my mind at any time.

Unbelievable. That's crazy. First of all, the government and medical experts are saying a mask does not help and the LAST PLACE A HIGH CONTAGIOUS person should be is in the ER!

Ugh. I'm so pissed at this. I wish Trump would get up there and tell the truth. I blame him for this mess, blowing off in the beginning, telling people it's no worse than a flu bug and continuing to be the person that the US citizens refer to, as all I hear is "Trump doesn't think it's bad..." .... ugh, forget it. I'm going to put myself in a timeout corner.

@JerseyGirl I’m tagging you for review.

There are 2 women currently on the Grand Princess cruise ship (the one waiting to dock in San Francisco right now) and the women have started a YouTube channel similar to David and Sally Abel.

I won’t post it directly at this point, but the link to their channel can be found through @Kron4news if you go here: Twitter. You may have to click on “see more replies”. (ETA: Hmm, so that didn’t work for me when I just tried it...maybe try this Twitter.... ugh that’s not working either. Darn it, here is link to YouTube that can be traced back to KRON4news:
)

I could only watch the first half.... I kind of have no words at the moment

JerseyGirl, let me know if ok to discuss. I know videos like this are usually not allowed but given the nature of this “case” and the Abel’s updates I thought this was ok.
I don't get why they thought they should to spell the virus name rather than just say it.

Unbelievable response below....

7:38 a.m. New York City has 2 more cases, mayor says

In an interview Thursday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed two more positive tests for the novel coronavirus, bringing the city's total to four and 13 overall in New York state.

"If there's good news here in our experience, we only have four people as of this morning who have tested positive," de Blasio said. "Of the tests completed 25 have come back negative so far. The batting average is good. On the four people, the ones who are previously tested, two of them are doing better."

A healthcare professional in the west of Ireland is among the latest group of people to test positive for the coronavirus, The Irish Times understands.

The person worked a shift in a hospital emergency department since returning from northern Italy, it is also understood.

They were one of four people, two males and two females, who tested positive for the disease on Wednesday evening.

I'm so glad you went there. I'll gladly go in the corner with you. It's outrageous! (But good for the hotel business..). :(

I hope as communities close schools, there are also plans for someone in each household be available to watch the kids.

I learned something new from a presser yesterday - I think it was Seattle (there were so many pressers yesterday, essentially all day long!). The authorities said that when schools close, the kids go somewhere else. Older kids are likely to go to places like the mall (didn't know kids still did that, lol!)....where they can infect the general population. Adults are likely to suffer more from the virus that kids, it appears.

So, if closing schools sends kids into public areas like malls, then the community at large is at HIGHER RISK than if the kids were in school.

And for little kids who need childcare, what system is in place for families without a stay-at-home parent? Use up sick time to watch healthy kids? Quit a job? Call in grandma, who might be at an age that makes her more vulnerable to the virus? What about single parents without family nearby?

Closing schools is way more complicated than just closing schools.

Not enough happening in US....I can only assume that we will take mandated options after a significant number of deaths....I'm not sure what that number will be....

The chart highlights the benefits, lives saved, with quarantine.
----------------------------

What is “social distancing,” (eg, Quarantine and Isolation strategies) and how can it slow the outbreak?
Though resources needs to be optimized in order to get best results from these strategies... a great study by our group.

But....when schools remain open the perception of the public is "this isn't so bad, I don't need to change what I do". When schools are open, teachers and their families are at risk, parents are in and out of the school, and interactions continue.
I give it two weeks with a delayed response and time lost...
