Treating coronavirus: How blood plasma from recovered patients may help

In February, doctors in Shanghai set up a special clinical to administer convalescent plasma to select patients who were newly infected with coronavirus.

“In China, we’ve only heard anecdotal reports of encouraging results. Nothing has been published yet,” said Greg Poland, a physician and infectious disease expert at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. “But this approach is definitely worth trying.”

Airline executives ask Trump and White House not to discourage air travel

Airline executives asked President Trump and other White House officials not to take steps that would lead to a slowdown in air travel, a person familiar with the Wednesday meeting said.

The executives asked the administration not to publicly discourage Americans from taking flights, saying their businesses were at risk if the government begins warning against commercial air travel.

no surprise here- Profits over Safety.
From what I'm hearing companies and our local universities are making their own decisions and recommending NO TRAVEL unless absolutely urgent.

(Dear mod, please delete if not allowed)

Question for those watching all this on SM in the US (no specific SM rumors or content references please per TOS):

I’m not on SM, but have been wondering “what it’s like out there” generally atm. How concerned are people overall in your opinions? Do we in here represent a unique group of being overly prepared and concerned people, or are there a lot of others who are as concerned as us, talking about supplies, etc.? Is there a lack of concern by many who are stuck on this “ it’s just the flu” mentality? Perhaps concern is evolving as more cases are diagnosed? Perhaps it varies in different regions? Are there people arguing as usual, insulting each other? It’s it mad out there? Total chaos? Is there a whole bunch of misinformation floating around as usual? Thanks for your thoughts and opinions. Again, please just give a general assessment on this without bringing over anything from SM, so as to not violate TOS.

I think people are concerned but most are being hush hush about it. We discovered our extended family on dh's side is certainly thinking about it and concerned but no talking about it on FB at all. As soon as it was announced locally someone had it in a homeschool group our group sent out a group text to "let the coop know if anyone goes to the other coop as well". I have only a few people in my feed who talk about it openly. But I've noticed more and more people opening up to the possibility that this is very concerning.

This morning a book of faces friend who is also a local church and homeschool friend sent me a link to that article shared by a doctor saying he thinks it will get bad and to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer, zinc lozenges etc. This person also is a nurse at a large hospital so I worry about our exposure to them. :/

I've seen a handful of people online who mocked it and are now clearly taking it more seriously. And one friend last week who manages an online group I'm in was openly telling people they should consider stocking up on things now before panic hits and sharing pictures of their local Walmart where bulk food stuff was completely wiped out.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sends "message of comfort" to South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sent a "personal letter" to South Korean President Moon Jae-in. In the letter, Kim conveyed "his message of comfort" to the South Korean people who are battling the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

Kim said he remains confident that South Korea will prevail in this fight "without fail" and wished for good health of the "brethren in the South."

The North Korean leader also expressed that he was "worried" about President Moon’s health and wrote of his frustration that there "isn’t much that he can do to help at this moment."

Kim underlined his "unwavering friendship and trust" towards President Moon and added that he will continue to "quietly send his best wishes" for the South Korean leader to overcome the coronavirus outbreak.

And....then we get this:

https://nypost.com/2020/03/05/rep-m...s-mask-says-congress-at-risk-for-coronavirus/

"Rep. Matt Gaetz stood by his move to sport an enormous gas mask to protect himself from coronavirus — even during a House floor vote on funding for the public health emergency."

I don't know if he is serious about the gas mask or making fun of people who are concerned about the virus.

Either way, this is just dumb. IMOPINION
The more I think about this, the more I think this Representative in the U.S. Congress is mocking the situation.

Dogs, cats can't pass on coronavirus, but can test positive
''Pet cats and dogs cannot pass the new coronavirus on to humans, but they can test positive for low levels of the pathogen if they catch it from their owners.''

''Scientists suspect the virus known as SARS-CoV-2 that causes the disease originated in bats before passing it on to another species, possibly a small wild mammal, that passed it on to humans. However, experts from the School of Public Health of The University of Hong Kong, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences of the City University of Hong Kong and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) have unanimously agreed that the dog has a low-level of infection and it is “likely to be a case of human-to-animal transmission.”

“Apart from maintaining good hygiene practices, pet owners need not be overly concerned and under no circumstances should they abandon their pets,” the spokesman said.

Closing schools will be horrible for parents that work. people will lose jobs that probably need them to survive. Economy will crash if the stop travel. But if that needs done, then it needs done NOW,

I want to hear numbers on how many are reinfected after recovery. I saw one person in either Korea or China 'seems' to have gotten it 'again'. It was on news last night but i don't remember where.

Me too. I saw an article in the past few days that some Dr’s in the Wuhan area are reporting a reinfection rate of approximately 14% so far.
They’re not sure if it’s actual reinfection, or if the patients are just being released too early and shouldn’t have been declared “recovered”

Donald Trump has declared live on television that, as a result of a hunch, he didn’t believe the World Health Organization’s assessment of the global death rate from coronavirus of 3.4%.

“I think the 3.4% is really a false number. Now, this is just my hunch,” Trump began, before continuing that “based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this, because a lot of people will have this, and it’s very mild – they’ll get better very rapidly, they don’t even see a doctor, they don’t even call a doctor.”

He went on: “You never hear about those people, so you can’t put them down in the category of the overall population, in terms of this corona flu, and/or virus. So you just can’t do that.”

“You know, all of a sudden it seems like 3 or 4%, which is a very high number, as opposed to a fraction of 1%,” he said, perhaps referring to the typical death rate for influenza, which is below one percent.

“But again, they don’t know about the easy cases because the easy cases don’t go to the hospital. They don’t report to doctors or the hospital in many cases. So I think that that number is very high. I think the number, personally, I would say the number is way under 1%,” Trump said.

____

Trump also appeared to reject his own administration’s advice for people feeling unwell to stay at home. He said: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better, just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work, some of them go to work, but they get better, and then when you do have a death, like you’ve had in the state of Washington, like you had one in California, I believe you had one in New York.”

There have been no deaths from coronavirus in New York.

On Thursday morning, the president hit back via Twitter on his comments relating to going to work.

✔@realDonaldTrump

I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work. This is just more Fake News and disinformation put out by the Democrats, in particular MSDNC. Comcast covers the CoronaVirus situation horribly, only looking to do harm to the incredible & successful effort being made!

No one seems overly alarmed in my small circle on Facebook. Lots of hand washing memes which is not the norm but no fire and brimstone posts. Needed to buy sanitizing wipes, I usually keep 3-4 around, my supply is low and Amazon was outrageous. Went to the Walmart website for a local pick up and they still had wipes and hand sanitizer available for local pick up. Got some of each. No need to break into the lab materials yet, lol.

Has anyone tried making the homemade stuff yet? I have a bottle of aloe in the lab we use for the occasional burn. I can try making a small amount today to see if it works like it should if any one is interested. I also have some 99% ethyl alcohol on hand to see if it makes any difference as far as ease of blending. No bacteria or viruses to check it’s efficiency once blended down but my components are pure.

Gaetz (Fl. R) is an attention seeking Idjit.
He does anything to get noticed.

People vote for him to represent them in Congress, so I guess they approve of treating people's concern about health as a joke.

I am removing myself from the self-imposed TO corner to full-out exile for the day.

Wash hands, everyone! (And if you think the situation is a joke, put on your gas mask and laugh at others who are concerned....but still wash your hands.)

The posts I see from friends and acquaintances mostly make light of it, posting jokes and memes. I suppose though, that fear often causes that reaction. I have reached out privately to family members and at least have gotten more of a concerned reaction that way. Still not as concerned as I believe they should be.
I cant find ANYONE concerned Except my mother and my husband !
