And folks, I just got back and found out that my post that directed people to the tornado thread was taken very badly. I can’t say I understand it, as I didn’t see the post I replied to attached to a longer conversation. I must have missed a few things. But I see posts like mine frequently on WS and they are usually meant well, so...
It's all good, imo.

I think we're all a bit on edge, and maybe we can cut each other a little slack and assume posts are meant with good intentions.

I get hay fever from ragweed and that's exactly what it feels like Fever , body aches, headache , chills, Sneezing, runny nose burning eyes, ETC
I not sure Ill know at all.

The studies seem to be showing that the early symptoms are more likely to be dry cough than runny nose. Would that help you tell the difference?

Then again, I suppose if someone with allergies has a runny nose due to hayfever, that doesn't mean that they don't have Covid-19 as well!

I am also concerned that I don't think everyone with the virus is getting a temperature of 100.4F that some of these places are using as a cut off 'signal' for a likely Covid-19 case, and even if they do get a bit of a fever, that might not be for the whole duration of the time that they're symptomatic/infectious.

Yes. I always clean our phones, because upon arriving home,
the first place everyone puts their phone is on my kitchen counter top and table. Kitchen is the center of our home.

I also clean our tv remotes a lot, because they get real tacky fast.
Good point. I also put my phone on the kitchen table. Another new habit to get into.

Walking in the door is becoming full of rituals - gotta get in the right mind to keep it pleasant, not a drag.

I just realized that one of my bottles of alcohol says 51%. What I’ve gleaned from this thread is that’s not a high enough concentration. So what is 51% isopropyl alcohol good for? I’ve been using it to clean my own injection site as well as cleaning things like grooming scissors, nail clippers, and tweezers. Is it pointless?

By the way- my mom’s university? One professor told everyone that if anyone is sick, stay home. The other one who was coughing all over everyone two weeks ago told the students this week that they CANNOT MISS if they’re sick!

That really angers me.

I think it's fear of being on the plane and possibly exposed to the virus, but also fear of being quarantined somewhere far from home. Not sure how to address that because that actually seems like a possibility for travelers. Even if within your own country, nobody wants to be stuck somewhere for 14 days.

you're right. There's currently 5 Fl. residents
quarantined in Washington state because they're positive for the virus. They're stuck there til clear.

I’m off to deep clean and organize my bathroom. Trying to decide what to do about the felt side of my iPad case that touches many surfaces throughout the day. I take it with me outside the house sometimes, too.

It's stuff like this that is going to create severe hardships for small businesses.

Collision, one of the biggest conferences in tech, calls off in-person event

Collision, a large annual technology conference, said Friday it will cancel the in-person event, which was scheduled from June 22-25 in Toronto.

Instead of bringing 33,000 people to the city for the conference, they hope everyone will join an online “Collision From Home” experience.

U.S. death toll rises to 14 — all but one fatality in Washington State

My daughter wears disposable contacts and while she's good about washing her hands before putting them in, I've seen her more than once pop them out without doing so (usually when she's tired). She actually prefers wearing her glasses, so she primarily wears those, thankfully, but I'll be nagging her (I mean, reminding her) to wash her hands before she takes her contacts out.

Andrew Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo)

UPDATE: There are now 33 confirmed cases of #Coronavirus in NYS — 11 new positive tests since yesterday.

All new cases are connected to the original New Rochelle case.

As we do more tests, the number of positive cases will rise, as we are seeing.

Negative on the corn starch mixture. Didn’t think it would work but had to try it. We have various natural clays that would thicken in the lab but I’m not sure about putting those on my hands. Natural doesn’t always mean safe.

I guess the easiest is putting some 60% minimum IPA (Isopropanol) in a spray bottle and spritzing your hands or some other alcohol that’s at least 120 proof (save the vodka and tequila for drinking). I’m sticking with 60% minimum concentration by weight as my own internal guidelines for what I will be willing to use. Using a measuring cup is a volume concentration and I’m not sure what % alcohol you’ll end up with. Would need to know specific gravity of each material. (See below..I’m not good at leaving such things unanswered)

While I was typing I decided to pull a couple of SDS for hand sanitizer off the web. I suspect that they are 60-70% alcohol, 1% aloe (just enough to claim) and the rest are viscosity agents. First one I pulled is Purell gel and it says it’s hazardous components are Ethanol 50-70% and Isopropyl 1-5% so by that it does dip lower than 60%.

While I’m playing on the web. Specific gravity of aloe very gel is 1.027 roughly. IPA is roughly 0.7885. 1 US cup is 236.6 ml. Doing some math at 1/3 cup and 2/3 cup gets you:
.33 cup x 236.6 ml/cup x 1.027 grams/ml = 158.26 grams of Aloe

0.66 cup x 236.6 ml/cup x 0.7885 grams/ml = 123.1 grams of IPA

That ends up 43.75% IPA if you were starting with 100% material. 124.1/(158.26+123.1)x100=

pretty sure I did that right but I haven’t had enough caffeine yet so I’ll check it after the brain is functioning fully.

ETA: I pulled 1 SDS for aloe gel to run the numbers with, not all aloe gels have same specific gravity based on the next SDS I pulled. I would use a kitchen scale if I was making it at home.

ETAA: pulled SDS for another hand sanitizer it says they use 50-100% of 70% v/v which means volume per volume and glycerine plus other ingredients. I have glycerine and it does thicken things but all the math variants are driving me a bit batty.
Screw it, wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.

Thanks for posting this @Tbone144. I forgot if you said you started with the WHO guidelines for making hand sanitiser? The batch sizes based on WHO guidelines were large so Popular Science magazine scaled the recipe down for consumer use.

Here is the link to the PS article as it might help you and it also provides a link back to the WHO information which is also quite helpful.

I plan to mix up a couple of batches tomorrow using aloe vera gel based on the PS article and I will report back on how it goes. I was also going to play around with adding glycerin and vit e to cut down on the drying aspects of the alcohol.

Yes @JaneEyre, 51% isn't too useful for present purposes of making hand sanitiser and home made wipes. I've been researching recipes and most call for 91% but as that isn't readily available it seems that anything above 70% can be used with ok results.

Yes, and good gracious, my TV remotes needed a good cleaning.

I found them pretty hard to clean well because they have those rubber buttons so close together that it was hard to clean them good around all the buttons.

Tip: Make sure your TV is off when cleaning the remotes or you may find your ordered a movie you didnt intend to order, or you may end up on an adult-only channel while your kids are in the room . :)

Saw one doctor today to get a 3 mo script of meds. I brought my own pen to sign in. Used hand sanitizer immediately after having to write on a clipboard. Failed to not touch my face 3 times. Sat at least 6 feet from everyone else. Watching the news say there was a new case in our area. Sprayed my shoes with lysol before getting in the car.

Then went to the hospital and got 24 hr urine jugs. Hand sanitized and touched nothing and tried to politely back away from the nurse telling me info I already knew. Commented to dh as we walked out that people were all avoiding touching things and touching the automatic door opener with their elbows.

Right after commenting on people avoiding touching things I walked out to see a man with his leg in a tree patting his backside and thighs over and over again repetitively. LOL He stopped to briefly bounce and then stick his other leg in a tree and pat backside and thighs again. No idea what that was but he kept it up as we drove off. Sprayed shoes again with Lysol. A friend in Oregon shared this idea.

Made another Dr's appt because my low BP is suddenly through the roof this week and I need BP meds. I got an email from the office after I made my appointment about coronavirus. I'm worried about going into the hospital Monday to turn in the jugs and get a blood draw. But it's do it now or go months and a riskier situation with no lab work done.
