FOUR THOUSAND QUARANTINED IN NEW YORK

Four thousand people have been quarantined in New York as 33 cases are now confirmed.

Governor Cuomo said that 2,700 in New York City, 1000 in Westchester and 70 in Nassau County are being quarantined “as a precaution”, of which 44 are mandatory.

Of the 33 confirmed cases, two are critical. The cases include a rabbi of the Young Israel synagogue in New Rochelle, who also teaches at Teshiva University in Washington Heights.

Quarantined Italian towns are buckling under the strain, major cities are emptying out and some of those infected say they are being stigmatised as Europe’s worst outbreak of coronavirus takes hold.

As of Thursday night, 3,858 cases had been detected as Italy aggressively tests for the virus. Out of that number, 148 people have died and 414 have recovered. Of those infected, 1,790 are in hospital – 351 in intensive care – and 1,115 are recovering at home.

Eleven towns are under lockdown – 10 in Lombardy and one in Veneto – and schools have been closed across the country as the government tries to contain a virus about which there are still many unknowns.

Stories that have emerged since the outbreak began reflect the contrasting nature of the virus’s impact, from the reassuring accounts of people cured to the suffering of those who have died or are in a critical condition. The heavily pregnant wife of “patient one”, the 38-year-old man who was Italy’s first confirmed locally transmitted case, was dismissed from hospital on Thursday; her husband, a marathon runner and amateur footballer, remains in intensive care.

The dead, mostly elderly and with underlying health problems, are buried quickly without ceremony to mitigate the risk of infection posed by their corpses. The living have become wary of those with even the slightest cough.

Coronavirus latest updates: all countries must make containing outbreak 'highest priority', says WHO

JMO
I totally agree with the WHO that all countries should still try to contain this as much as possible and never give up those efforts. Because every little bit of containment will go a long ways to prevent more cases, as we have seen how just one infected person can affect many many other people.

The scary statistic to me from that information is there is 1,790 in the hospital out of 3,858 cases. So that is 1790/3858 = .46 or 46%.

So 46% of known cases in Italy are in the hospital!

To be fair, they are probably only finding most of the people because those people were pretty sick and went to either their doctor or a hospital and were flagged for testing. So if there are a lot of less severe cases and lots of "unknown/unconfirmed" cases out there, then the % would go down. But still....Wow.

Please countries everywhere, keep trying to contain this sickness and dont give up that effort.

Watch your fever. If you have a high fever it's not an allergy, call your doctor ASAP.
That was the advice I was given. It starts suddenly with a HIGH fever, it comes on suddenly with no warning, no body aches or malaise and a dry cough follows with no congestion.
He describes his symptoms. I'm sure others may have had other experiences though.

I wonder if we'll see a lower number of flu cases this year since everyone is being more careful with hand washing, etc.
That would be good!
jmo

Not likely to have much effect.

We are in Week 40 of the Influenza season. There are still active influenza cases, but the incidence is dropping quickly, just like in most influenza cycles.

This year has been slightly milder than last year.

I wish I shared his optimism. I think this monster coronavirus could be around a long time.

He also has questionable 'facts' in there. But you've got to admire the optimism, and I mean that in a good way. I hope it is reassuring to people. There's no point in spreading panic.

I also hope it won't get in the way of people and businesses in the US making common sense preparations for if/when it gets worse in their locality.

Customs is STILL NOT screening passengers from coronavirus hot-spots Italy, Iran and South Korea who arrive at major airports, including JFK, LAX, Atlanta and Chicago's O'Hare

“But the CDC is only insisting on screening passengers who arrive in the country from China and Iran.”

LAX....wth? LAX is a hotbed of crowds and flights from all over.
When I flew about 10 days ago, a TSA agent checked my hands with a swab. He wouldn't say why, so I looked it up later.
The test was for explosives residue! wth?

I just talked to a guy who bought swim goggles to protect himself from the #Coronavirus

Actually, this isn't a bad idea. Many photos of
scientists or health pro's who work in labs wear
a form of goggles to protect the eyes from
bacteria and viruses. along with the masks.

I actually ordered masks that have eye coverings attached. Clear vinyl.
Thanks Herat for mentioning yours.

I’m wary of those with the slightest cough. And they’re everywhere. One of the cleaning ladies was coughing all over yesterday. A fellow attorney who works in the adjacent little office coughed a couple times.

What really bothered me was during my hike with my hyena yesterday morning some dude came running by and sneezed into his hand- partially. Luckily I was off the trail and I refused to go back on the trail. I walked around to renter it upwind of where he sneezed. Poor guy was Asian so mindful of how Asians are facing discrimination over this I felt bad about scowling but come on! If you’re sneezing or coughing please just stay home!

might have been environmental allergy
I sneeze & cough in nature but I'm not sick, just allergic

It's hard to believe I spent the first few days feeling like I was talking to myself in here! I thought back then, when I decided to start a thread as no one else had...how likely is this to be 'the' pandemic we've all been waiting for? Nahh, it'll blow over in a few weeks, I thought, but I figured it still deserved a thread.

I'm so grateful for all the excellent contributions from everyone, with information, links, thoughts, questions, etc. It's made me feel so proud to have been the one who started it off :D
I came here in the beginning solely so you wouldn’t get lonesome! ;)

FEDERAL PROBLEM

CDC, FDA, NIH are all under Dept of Health & Human Services (also does Medicare) which is getting all the help and $$$.

TSA is under Department of Homeland Security.

Unless DHH directs DHS to make the changes and specifies how they are to be done, who does what, and who pays for what, nothing is going to change at TSA.

It's actually more likely DHHS is going to put their own people in charge, but where they are going to get them, I dunno
