I've been out for a few hours and want to report on cautionary measures being taken in public venues. In short: Not much. DH was at a Ford dealership this morning for a recall on his Escape. There were no wipes or hand sanitizer until he checked out at the cashier's desk. There is community coffee service for waiting customers -no wipes or hand sanitizer.

DH returned home, and we both later left for the City Clerk's office to "spoil" our previously-mailed absentee ballots for Michigan's primary next Tuesday. We filled in new ballots and put them in the voting box. Hand sanitizer on counters for public and staff use.

Quick trip to the international marketplace for a few groceries. Tasting going on like any other Friday (Saturday and Sunday, too). Produce stockers, butchers, and fish mongers always wear gloves (no masks) but no other staff wore them. I didn't notice any customers wearing gloves or masks, either.

Final stop was for my PT appointment during which time DH did his regular Friday swim. PT outpatient facility is in a Beaumont Hospital building that houses a fully equipped gym, indoor track, and aquatic center. I used the locker room restroom and noticed no wipes or hand sanitizer, although they always have hand soap, shampoo, and body lotion. DH reported that men's locker room also had nothing beyond what is always there.

I will now try to catch up on the pages that I've missed.

IMO....NEXT HOT SPOT....

Three Boston residents who attended a company meeting in the city last week
are presumed to have contracted the coronavirus, officials said Friday.

Boston Mayor Walsh said in a news conference the three residents had attended the meeting organized by biotech firm Biogen last week.

The presumed cases comprised of two women and a man, all in their 40s, said Marty Martinez, chief of health and human services. All were self-isolating at home, he said, adding that two were showing symptoms of the virus while the other was not.

Walsh said one of the non-Boston residents confirmed to have coronavirus was the 44-year-old man who Tennessee health officials this week announced as the state's first case of coronavirus.

That man had recently flown into Boston Logan International Airport on a round-trip flight from Nashville International Airport. Tennessee officials said he was asymptomatic while traveling.

Martinez said the Boston residents who were presumed cases had been in "close contact" with one of the confirmed cases. Health officials were looking for people who had been in direct contact with the presumed new cases.

Officials had also identified the room where the meeting took place and were taking measures to clean it, Martinez said.

Coronavirus in Boston, Massachusetts: Gov. Charlie Baker, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to Provide Update on Preparedness and Planning

Once this word gets around, I think we'll see many more business-event cancellations.

I mentioned upthread that my friend organizes these types of events and cancellations will likely be devastating to her business. :(

‘This is war': Doctor leading search for coronavirus vaccine says it's the most frightening disease he's ever encountered as second British victim is confirmed and number of UK cases rises to 163

Dr Richard Hatchett, the boss of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, said we need to be prepared to go to war on the virus as he reveals it could take between 12-18 months to develop a vaccine and cost £1.5b ($2bn).

Oh sloane, I'm sorry. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet under any circumstances. But know you are not the worst dog mom ever. It might feel like it right now but that's a lie. You helped that little baby get to be 18 years old! That's being a good dog mom.

Hugs to you.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I am sure you have given her a great life, and the comfort of being with her beloved person until the very end.

Current update on what I know about my friend’s testing is that the hospital took a sample and sent it to the CDC who will determine whether or not to test it. That’s why the US is still considered low-risk, IMO, because we don’t have the test kits to really know how many sick people have it.
BBM

I’m not a conspiracy theorist AT ALL, so why am I having thoughts that not testing people is the best way to keep the numbers down in the U.S.? No information is misinformation. Who benefits if ”information” looks good? Who will be upset if “information” looks bad? Rhetorical question but you get my drift.

I just want to mention how amazing and helpful Alaska Airlines was today with helping me bring my daughter home for spring break from college in Seattle early. The lady got her on a flight in the next couple of days, waved all change fees without my even asking and found her the best seat she could finagle. She seemed genuinely distraught about what we were going through and was upset she couldn’t get her on a flight tomorrow. UW cancelled classes the rest of the quarter this morning so I bet tons of kids are trying to fly out. The lady sounded choked up and it made me cry. These are strange times, but people are helping each other however they can.
:) Nice to hear. :)

Look for them as Disposable Face Shields ( they technically aren't masks)

Water bottle work too.

Infectious disease experts urge Americans age 60 and older to reconsider their usual activities

Two top infectious disease experts with close ties to the federal government are advising people age 60 and older and people with immune issues to strongly consider avoiding activities that involve large crowds, such as traveling by airplane, going to movie theaters, attending family events, shopping at crowded malls and going to religious services.

Dr. William Schaffner, a Vanderbilt University professor and longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said people in these two groups "should strongly consider not doing these activities at this juncture."

“This ought to be top of mind for people over 60, and those with underlying health problems, such as heart or lung disease, diabetes, or compromised immune systems,” he added.

Both experts were speaking personally, and not as a representative of any government group

So coming up just in my tiny universe, already scheduled and some paid for : a Broadway show, a pro basketball game, a trip on NJ Transit train to visit my daughter and grandson (and spending the week in the NYC area), my niece's very large wedding, my (step) granddaughter's college graduation, and about 30 scheduled substitute jobs at a high school. Oh, and a trip to Disney World in the fall, with my mom and brother. DH and I already cancelled a cruise.

I know I'm not alone in this - having lots of fun things and obligations planned in the near future. I could just cry thinking about this mess and the decisions that have to be made on short term and long term basis. I'm so torn. And sad.

I think if over 60's were asked to limit their activities for a couple of weeks ,it would be feasible.
but many go to all types of social activities and often provide child care.
it would be very depressing for them to be on their own for days on end.
this virus could go on for months.
Plenty of people over 60 are still working! ;)

I was subbing in a classroom of high school sophomores today (actually 3 separate classes) and there was all kinds of disgusting stuff going on. Let's just say besides the usual coughing and sneezing and nose blowing, some had their feet (and dirty shoe bottoms) up on the seat in front of them, others were hugging each other in greeting and sharing lots of stuff (pens, chrome books, coloring utensils..) One kid actually picked a scab off his leg, was bleeding and trying to stop it with a tissue.

These are really pleasant kids for the most part, but boy do they need some instructions in non-germ spreading. I did my best, believe me, to make a lesson out of all of it. And then I slathered myself, my phone and my laptop in hand sanitizer.
I hear ya. I was out for a walk and a young person whizzed down the middle of the busy street on a bike, no helmet, holding the handle bars with one hand, and looking at his phone in the other hand. I'm pretty sure he's not concerned about the virus.

(Actually reminded me of myself as a young person when I rode my bike everywhere in an unsafe way, though not with a cellphone....didn't exist yet!)
