So I’m back from “toilet paper and bleach shopping” and thankfully was able to get a large supply so I don’t need to worry about it anymore. I can have some peace knowing I don’t have to deal with crowds and sick people just to go get toilet paper and can wipe my bum for the next couple months and keep the house clean. (Last night’s discussions about Brillo pads and sponges got me a little worried lol, along with seeing the recent article out of Burbank re: the Costco lines and other articles about TP so I was motivated to just get this over and done with. It’s not like TP is going to waste, you will always need it.

Anyway, it was hell out there today, but not for the reasons you would think, such as long lines or short supplies.

Once again, I was the only one in the store “CV shopping”, and with rubber gloves on might I add.

In a nutshell, I got a bunch of stares and whispers and was literally mocked by the clerk who said “it’s only the flu” and “we’re all going to die sometime”. (Eta: I schooled her btw that I am more worried about my family member with cancer that has been undergoing chemotherapy. That shut her up real fast.)

The lady in front of me in line AND the man behind me also both had negative things to say. It was offensive. It was not cool. I almost started doubting myself it was so bad.

I’m sure after reading here I’ll get right back in my groove that I am not overreacting and am being prepared.

Anyway glad to be home and back with you guys. I heard so much BS and misinformation today, conspiracy theories, “it’s the government”, “it’s all the media”...

Yes, it really gives us some hope that the US can pull out of this, too. We have hard days ahead of us, but hopefully they'll get it under control.
How exactly? We are barely testing and yet it appears it is already spreading in the communities.

Breaking:

Shams Charania on Twitter

Sources: The NBA has sent a memo to its franchises explaining that, due to coronavirus outbreak, teams should be preparing to play games without fans in attendance and identifying “essential staff” present for these games -- should it be necessary.

Big question... is this entire area still in quarantine, or, are they back to work?
For heavens sake, are there no reporters?
If everyone is out and about and their cases are down, this is great news.
If, they're all locked up, this is bad news. Which is it, dammit!?!

They are still under quarantine in Wuhan, China because yesterday the residents in the apartment buildings (who have been locked up for weeks) were shouting to the officials touring the area that everything was “fake, fake”. The official was being led to believe residents were getting meat and vegetable deliveries and everything was fine when it isn’t true. The Lady official has launched an investigation.

100,000. People around the world is VERY low.
We're discussing Billions of people.

Even if we're discussing 1 million infected, that is still, very low.

The flu affects 5 million people a year. According to google, about 56,000. People die from the flu worldwide a year.
Numbers don't lie.
I am sort of happy, that our world is paying attention to this, and taking precautions.
For sure, I think it will save lives and prepare us.
The "sort of" comes from my belief that the media, is latching on to this and exhaborating this story because they have nothing else to sell clicks at the moment.
That is Not good.
Do your own research.
The likelihood of aware people who wash their hands, take care of themselves and live in a clean environment, catching this virus is amazingly low.

The new coronavirus has now infected more than 100,000 people around the world, but in mainland China the number of new cases fell on Saturday to just 99 – the first time since January 18 that fewer than 100 cases were recorded.

China’s National Health Commission said 74 of the new infections were reported in Hubei’s provincial capital Wuhan, with the remainder occurring in other provinces. This is the second day there were no further cases elsewhere in Hubei province where the outbreak began.

Same way they estimate the mortality rate for the flu even though many people never see a doctor for it.

I hadn’t thought of that.

My niece is in a southwest province. They are out of quarantine and she went out to eat for the first time in 2 months today... :):)

Like most countries, China provides health care to all its citizens, so, unlike the US and other countries with high numbers of uninsured, people are less likely to get sick and die of it without being under a doctor's care.

If you're saying it's better be sick in China than the US, the entire world begs to differ. jmo

Glad to hear it and that your niece is ok. Hopefully it will be under control soon and everyone will be out of quarantine. But I’m very worried at how well China is going to prevent future outbreaks.

Here is my simple math on the situation in the US.

The high risk group is baby boomers, over 60. There are 73 million in the US.
11 million - 15% of them get the virus (little lower than other countries)
1 million - 10% require hospitalization....so our hospitals are over-run. We don't even have this many beds open.
550,000 deaths- 5% of infected die....much, much lower % than other countries.
It just gets worse with higher percentages.
Speed is survival....the faster we test, the faster we can save lives.....

For comparison.....
This flu season, an estimated 32 million people have gotten the flu, with 310,000 hospitalizations and 18,000 deaths.

The reason there are only 100,000 cases in the world is because China locked down their country. I believe the western world will experience unabated community transmission because they won't do the same.

I want to share your optimism and I hope you’re right. However, flu viruses are already all over the world to the point that they can predict where they will go. This virus is new and not yet everywhere.

Also, if 56,000 die per year from the flu or so, that’s in 12 months. We had over 3,000 deaths in two months in China alone. And mostly only in one province. That’s a super small territory compared to the globe. So this has the potential of being insanely destructive. Millions of people dead if not contained.

Finally, we are reading direct statements from actual health officials and leaders. Not from the media. I mean we are hearing from the CDC that the elderly should self-isolate a bit, etc. And regions are shutting down schools and mass events. That’s not the media creating that.

U.S. has raised its travel alert levels for Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan

The U.S. State Department on Friday raised its alert level for travel to Azerbaijan, warning Americans to reconsider travel there due to a coronavirus outbreak and response measures implemented by the country’s government.

The State Department also raised its alert level for travel to Turkmenistan due to travel restrictions and quarantine procedures instituted in response to the virus.

My driver kept yawning without covering his mouth. Not sure about all that as it is “respiratory droplets” which have been mentioned definitively as being the transmission source, but gee whiz, cover your mouth.

There’s a flu vaccine, plus so many unknowns about this virus, that’s what is causing the hysteria, if you will. IMO I don’t trust or feel okay with anything that is causing sickness and death around the globe. If you don’t mind I’ll worry and live over here. MOO IMO MOO IMO

Six new cases in New South Wales, Australia

In Australia, New South Wales Health confirmed six fresh cases of coronavirus on Saturday, taking the state’s total to diagnosed cases to 34.

NSW Health authorities are seeking to track down passengers on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha after a man in his 70s was among six new cases of the deadly virus diagnosed in the state.

All of the new cases were close contacts or family members of previously confirmed cases except for a male who contracted the virus after visiting Italy.

The man fell ill day the day after flying back to Sydney via Qatar before he was diagnosed this week.
