Coronavirus latest: St Patrick's Day festival go-ahead criticised by doctors

The Government’s go-ahead for the St Patrick's Day Festival ... strongly criticised by leading doctors.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, backed by chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan, said the extravaganza – which will attract thousands from overseas and bring crowds on the streets across the country – would go ahead at this stage.

Thousands from overseas? Are people from all countries backpacking to this St Patrick's Festival? It's rumored that yesterday backpackers in Melbourne were turned away from hostels. Backpackers probably think that they are invincible to the virus - old sick people, right?

Are they that stupid to travel to green beer festivals during a global epidemic (not yet defined as a pandemic).

Is this for flipping real? They all gave up before they even started and just plan no containment at all? Is that what I've getting from all I'm reading tonight? No tests. Hope you don't die?

I've been sick about it for days....I realized it with the LA County and Washington pressers when they wouldn't mandate. Then the WHO got mad on one of their pressers and said practically the same thing you just said. No one has the guts to lock it down. I'm just beside myself...

Yes. Florida has deaths and unreported cases. I definitely believe it’s under reported due to the economy. I mentioned in a prior thread about an impromptu doctors appointment yesterday. I was asked the Coronovirus survey questions by the person who made the appt, the receptionist upon arrival and the nurse upon check in. All before I was able to see the doctor. I do believe they’re doing the best they can but keeping mum about it for the most part.

Two dead in Florida from coronavirus

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Though Gov. Ron DeSantis announced earlier Friday that Florida had no new cases of coronavirus, the Florida Department of Health said late Friday that two people had died from the contagion.

One of the deaths involved a patient with a previously unannounced case in Lee County. That case is considered presumptive positive as it has not yet been confirmed by the CDC. The other involved a man in his 70s in Santa Rosa County, which was announced on Thursday and is confirmed. Officials say the man from Santa Rosa County traveled internationally and had underlying health conditions.

There are also two new additional presumptive positive cases in Broward County

The Florida Department of Health says within the state, there are now a total of six Florida residents with coronavirus and one non-Florida resident with coronavirus, as well as five cases involving Florida residents being held at federally designated facilities who were brought in to the United States after traveling abroad and are being held until they are healthy.

There are 88 people awaiting test results and 278 people being monitored, as well as 100 people who have tested negative and a total of 1,010 people who have been monitored to date.

That math is interesting. The primary patients at the VA Healthcare system are geriatric veterans, Vietnam, Korea, WW II veterans.

They don't have the capacity to take care of the veterans if that math is correct.

We don't have the capacity to take care even half those numbers. I've begged my 80 year old parents to hibernate on their farm and don't come out until its over....

Gov. DeSantis proclaimed 2 weeks ago that he was not 'allowed' to discuss testing numbers,
active/pending tests, etc. due to a state law.
HUH? He was immediately attacked and barely back down- for a bit.
Tourism is king here. Disney World rules local
and state decisions. Back room decisions to
keep information out of the news to slow down
the convention cancellations and family leisure
trips coming in. Orlando/Orange County press conference this week was "We're open for business, come on down. No problems here."
Then complaining about the huge conventions cancelling and the dollars lost, etc.
It's all about the money. And the Optics.
Disney has closed all Asian parks, finally, so they will delay closing Orlando until no one shows up. That's 50,000 or so daily moving through the area.
Florida will be in crisis mode very shortly.

That's like the Chinese eye doctor who was not allowed to discuss his findings.

What's that movie called - about the shark that chomps on the girl in the first 3 minutes ?? ... Jaws? They wanted to keep the beaches open despite risks to limb and life. It sounds like that is Florida today, yet that doesn't make sense because Florida is knows for its responsibility to inform citizens of all details regardless of insignificance (e.g.:Casey Anthony).

Not sure what the problem is. Those people knew perfectly well why they were confined to a boat and what the testing was for. The results, considering all but 2 are crew, are pretty good news, actually.

They tested 47 out of 3,000. I wouldn't call that a representative sample.

Well I hope the numbers will be fewer this year but this gives you an idea of the 2019 parade in Dublin.

AROUND HALF A million people lined the streets of Dublin this afternoon to catch a glimpse of the country’s largest St Patrick’s Day parade.

I've been curious about Florida, the sunshine law state that releases all legal documents prior to trial. Why is that state allowed to withhold statewide health information that should be openly available as soon as it is discovered (individual legal rights).

Tourists are gone. If this had been handled properly from the beginning with physical barriers between infected populations and everyone else, it would be last week's story. Instead, it is tomorrow's headline. Politics and economics were a priority for the sprint, turns out this is a marathon.

I can assure you, the tourists are not gone. This virus is like the flu and people will go to the theme parks sick. They spent all that money to get here, and get in, and they’re going to stay. It was, and is, not unusual to see people puking, coughing, sneezing, etc and remaining at events. You see this during hurricanes too. The tourists don’t leave until they’re forced to. There’s no way vendors are go to be able to control it, short of being forced to close. Traffic is still horrendous. It takes 30 min to go 10 miles.

I’ve been self quarantining for 3 years since my cancer diagnosis. I venture out only as necessary. I’ve long since made hand washing a priority. Hand sanitizer everywhere, tissues, increased use of paper towels, the house aired out at least monthly, vacuum, mop, dust regularly, etc. even the inside of the vehicle. I have a pair of driving gloves with a special finger tip that will allow me to use my cell phone screen. (Found them at Target 3 years ago.) I have gloves and masks the hospital gave me. I continue to use them as needed. A lot of this is common sense.

I was supposed to attend a 2 day cancer conference in Boca Raton next week but it has been cancelled. It’s now going to be online and the registration fee will not be adjusted. The hotel rooms are being refunded. The economy is for sure going to take a hit in the business arena. Highly doubtful the tourists will stay away. Just my thoughts tho.

Hey you all. I've spent days, reading all of your posts.
Most were intelligent, preparation in the earlier days.
I learned a lot, and I took your advise. Thankfully, our household has hand sanitizers, food, medicene, pet food and toiletries to last well over 2 weeks.
Just in case. Thank you posters here, for your sage advise.
With that said. I do not, see this virus ending the world as we know it.
It dies from handwashing and bleach.
The reason large corporations are cancelling events is because their insurance companies have told them they will not insure them against claims from people who claim they got sick at one of their events.
Yes. In America, insurance companies and lawyers rule the land.
Very sad but true.
Anyway, if ANYONE, here, or a family member gets diagnosed wigh this virus, I certainly will be amazed.
Let me know if that happens.
In the meantime, relax. Trust in Math. Go about your business with a hand sanitizer.

The Spanish Flu started in the states. Every country can screw up. Furthermore, the origin of the virus is currently unknown. There's speculation that it originated at a wet market because the virus is similar to one in bats and snakes, but there's no known direct connection between bats or snakes and people.

Working on a ban now it seems. They believe it’s the origin. Too late for this one, but a start in the right direction. IMO

Interesting. So prioritizing patients could happen across the world, where old people could be sent home due shortage of hospital beds, while those who seem to have a better chance of survival are treated? It will be interesting to see how this plays out in countries that are hopelessly unprepared and who under-estimate the severity of the epidemic.

Frankly at some point the system could be so overwhelmed, as in Italy, that even prioritization can't occur. That's where I believe we are headed....

You’re absolutely right, Otto. Unfortunately, if the easy to understand educational information hasn’t been developed and broadcast by now, I don’t think it will be. Or it will be too little, too late. It’s really hard to wrap my mind around what seems to be deliberate obfuscation on the part of the government.

Also the cooperation in the obfuscation by some of the major media chains. Supporting hunches and non-facts is a dangerous agenda to broadcast to the general public. IMO

Yeah it’s not the zombie apocalypse but for the over 3,000 who have died thus far from the limited areas and cases we’ve seen, life has ended as they knew it. And it has just started.

We have to remember that this is death and illness from a virus that’s not the flu. Which means ON TOP of all the annual flu deaths, we have this.

And it’s still not everywhere. The vast majority of counties in the US haven’t seen it.

Further, the crowd issue has zero to do with insurance companies and lawyers, IMO. Because good luck proving you acquired COVID 19 at the car expo instead of from some random supermarket checkout clerk sneezing on your money. Any such lawsuit would be dead in the water as soon as it’s filed.

Moreover, this thing causes lung scarring. Scary stuff. I’ve never heard of any regular flu doing that.

Finally, this epidemic has doctors alarmed. Enough so they’re telling elderly people and those with conditions not to fly and to stay home as much as possible. My doctor has never told me not to fly despite going through over a decade of flu seasons with her as my doctor.

I’m trusting in my doctor. People with medical degrees and experience who aren’t telling everyone to just relax and go about their business.

Uber to compensate drivers diagnosed with illness or force to self-quarantine

Uber said it plans to compensate drivers and delivery workers who are required to self-quarantine, or if they are diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Employees “in these situations” will receive compensation for a period of up to 14 days, although they did not say how much they would receive.
