US Surgeon General

Americans: if you are sick with fever/cough/ flu symptoms, please don’t go to work!
Employers: PLEASE understand giving your employees flexibility and (paid) sick leave will save you money in the long run- it’s much cheaper than shutting down because everyone else gets sick!

I'm assuming he knows about this first case in the USA on January 19 in Washington, so it's not a stretch to speculate that it is the source of the current outbreak.

"On January 19, 2020, a 35-year-old man presented to an urgent care clinic in Snohomish County, Washington, with a 4-day history of cough and subjective fever."

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2001191
Yes....he's going for the transmission from WA to CA, trying to get a handle on a forecast or if he needs to change his estimate of the outbreak size in Washington. He kept it the same at 600 to 1500 right now and growing.

He was beginning to think that there were 2 different strains working in WA but he appears to be backing off of that idea.

Politicians are at high risk of contracting this due to all the handshaking. Glad he’s taking it serious.

Australia- There are fears coronavirus figures across the country will climb even further with 75 Aussies already diagnosed. The latest are two Year 10 students at s school in Sydney's west.

There is growing worry people are not isolating themselves when sick, causing the deadly infection to spread further.

A student in Hobart went to two nightspots and to work at a hotel after he had been told to stay home while waiting for results of tests. A woman in Perth went to an orchestra concert and a Melbourne doctor treated patients while experiencing symptoms.

Now the country’s peak medical body has urged politicians to step back and let Chief Medical Officer Brendan Murphy be the main voice of the country’s response, to avoid confusion.

Just me, but no one getting that close to my face....I cancelled mine.
Yikes! Imagine how the dental hygienist and dentist must feel.

@MJPeony Newsom knows what will happen if he isn’t effusive in his praise. It’s possible he’s trying to avoid that for CA. I think there are others involved in this who are attempting to walk a very fine line between selling their souls and retaining integrity...for the greater good. At least I hope that’s the case with Newsom...for California’s sake.
All JMO

Yes that’s one way to look at it and I suppose you are right. I certainly hope we pull through this better than what might be currently be predicted.

This is why I could never ever ever forevermore be a politician. I’d be incapable of keeping my lid from boiling off.

The Australian stock market has shed more than $100 billion as it sinks to its lowest level in over a year as coronavirus spreads around the globe.
The benchmark S&P/ASX200 was down 314.2 points, or 5.05 per cent, at 5,902.0 at 10.46am AEDT.
The broader All Ordinaries index fell 319.9 points, or 5.09 per cent, to 5,967.6, with both major indexes at their lowest levels since February last year.

Today's losses extend the market's decline to $426 billion since February 20.
The largest falls were felt in the energy sector, which was down over 16 per cent, after oil prices suffered their largest one day dive in more than 11 years on Friday, as Russia, and OPEC split on a proposal to cut production to stabilise prices.

I wish I could give more details but this reallly puts me in a BIG BIND. This is going to require a LOT of thought.

I’ve figured it out... its your plumbing and you need to prevent and protect against any aerosol plumes....

:D

Looks like the Grand Princess was rejected in San Francisco and will dock in Oakland.
Coronavirus Live Updates: Cases in U.S. Cross 500, Deaths in Italy Surge

I wondered why Oakland and not S.F. and found this:

There are limited docks that will be able to dock a ship of that size, and the Port of Oakland location was the easiest to seal off, securely move passengers toward their isolation destinations and protect the safety of the public, Newsom's office said. The port is also close to the airport and Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield.

The Port of Oakland's Outer Harbor Terminal also isn't near any big residential or commercial areas, while the San Francisco port, opens up onto the popular Embarcadero, where tourists and businesses are plentiful.

Cornonavirus: California governor explains why Port of Oakland chosen as 'best site' for cruise ship docking

It really makes sense since Oakland is in the East Bay on the same side of the bay as Travis AFB and the somewhat less busy Oakland International Airport. It’s a straight shot of about an hour on I-80 to Travis.

Jumping off this, (welcome again @Sundog :) ), we know very clearly from various credible sources that this is the “Angel of Death” (insert source) for older people.

Out of curiosity, I do wonder how many individual persons to date have died that do not fall into the category of “elderly” ...well let’s start low and use the “40” number that was mentioned twice in early WHO conferences.

I guess what I’m saying is, we are of course looking at numbers, numbers, numbers, but remember every single digit is a person’s life. It might be easy so to speak to gloss over the lower numbers...high risk is high risk, but I’m curious about...
having a hard time articulating at the moment, so “making a note”.

@dixiegirl1035 , or anyone else who cares to answer, how many people, that we know of, around the world collectively, under 40 have died. Of course, their underlying conditions and level of care would need to be evaluated as well.

I don't know of any source that can/is tracking such as to age/death. All we could do is go on is the original %'s from the 72,000 patients paper percentage, and then do that percentage on those infected in the world to date?

Australia- A Melbourne family who were quarantined on the Diamond Princess cruise ship off Japan have made the selfless decision to "self-isolate" themselves after returning home, despite receiving the all-clear from medical authorities.

The Soh family have finally returned to Melbourne after being in quarantine off Yokohama, Japan for close to a month.

After 10 days of being cooped inside a tiny room in what they described as a holiday from hell, the family received the news that daughter Kaitlyn had tested positive for the virus. They then made the decision to stay together in Japanese quarantine before returning home.

Italy just reported 1492 new cases and 133 new deaths. Can we please take this serious. Actions that look ridiculous today will look like the most reasonable thing in 3 weeks, keep that in mind.
Florian Krammer on Twitter

I think something that gets lost for many (or never said so we can figure out) is how close these cases are to each other. i.e. the US reports 1492 new cases in Washington state in King county vs 1492 cases in Washington state entirely vs 1492.....well, you know what I mean. It's gonna hit folks in the US when numbers get up there in their city. MOO

Florida announces 2 coronavirus deaths, 7 new cases in 24 hours
Thank you for sharing that, I was wondering where all of them are. I'm in Pinellas county, and sure it's here already.

Dr. Fauci is on "60 Minutes" right now, I predict that next week, he "will be "too" busy" working to attend any press conferences.

We will see more of VP Pence and Dr. Carson in front of cameras only.

Staying at our home. No driving anywhere. I'm thankful we have a huge backyard because I have told my teens i expect outdoor activities for an hour or so to complete their gym requirement. My 2 teens have been playing basketball in our back yard driveway . They also helped chop up wood from downed trees from our little windstorm we had as well. I'll be honest, my teen daughter is a social butterfly but seeing her play basketball with her freshman brother and help him chop wood is a great sight to see instead of their teen bickering.

I’m so glad it’s working out @Oregonmama. It really helps to have outdoor space. Our huge deck would save my sanity if we have to stay put in our downtown apartment. What a neat benefit for your teens!

Oh my....what a story....please read at the link.....

In January, firefighters responded seven times to the Life Care facility. In February, and the first five days of March, they responded 33 times.

Firefighters are now grappling with the idea that coronavirus may have already been circulating at Life Care for weeks and that they, and Life Care workers, residents and visitors, had not been warned to take precautions, And that they may have inadvertently helped spread the virus farther.

In the days leading up to last Friday, Life Care staff and first responders were using nebulizers and CPAP machines to treat patients. “We essentially aerosolized it,” one first responder said, because before last Friday, that was standard protocol to treat patients.

“We made it worse,” he said.

Snipped and bolded by me.

Anyone still wondering why testing is important??
This is one reason why.
