Cancel Everything

last section of this article "Cancel Everything"

"When the influenza epidemic of 1918 infected a quarter of the U.S. population, killing tens of millions of people, seemingly small choices made the difference between life and death.

"As the disease was spreading, Wilmer Krusen, Philadelphia’s health commissioner, allowed a huge parade to take place on September 28th; some 200,000 people marched. In the following days and weeks, the bodies piled up in the city’s morgues. By the end of the season, 12,000 residents had died.

"In St. Louis, a public health commissioner named Max Starkloff decided to shut the city down. Ignoring the objections of influential businessmen, he closed the city’s schools, bars, cinemas, and sporting events. Thanks to his bold and unpopular actions, the per capita fatality rate in St. Louis was half that of Philadelphia. (In total roughly 1,700 people died from influenza in St Louis.)

"In the coming days, thousands of people across the country will face the choice between becoming a Wilmer Krusen or a Max Starkloff.

"In the moment, it will seem easier to follow Krusen’s example. For a few days, while none of your peers are taking the same steps, moving classes online or canceling campaign events will seem profoundly odd. People are going to get angry. You will be ridiculed as an extremist or an alarmist. But it is still the right thing to do."

I am astounded by the number of people that assume they are not at risk. Evidently many are shedding the virus, despite not feeling ill, but infecting those around them. I personally will avoid social functions for the time being. My social life will primarily be with horses and dogs.

I'm not...yet,. But, my kids all do. And of course I'm scheduled to visit daughter next week to hang out in Hoboken, by traveling NJ Transit trains. Not sure what to do, as she will be home alone with my grandson and was looking for company. SIL is traveling.

I want to be with her to make sure they are ok. And, I want to stay home and make sure DH and myself are also ok. I'm so torn.
:D
Do you believe the train is sanitary?

Again, US culture is not to stay home with minor symptoms. People are coming to work sick all the time. One thing if they have common cold, the other if they have Covid. Tests should be available and given for even minor symptoms, so those with Covid at least stay home.
This is so true. There has to be something other than "stay home if sick," otherwise life is completely unpredictable, not knowing if people will be able to show up as scheduled.

I am planning an event that will be happening this Sunday. I'm nervous this week, not about the event, but that I might get a sniffle. Do I cancel the whole thing and tell people not to come for a sniffle?

There are days when you have to just plow through, even if a little bit under the weather, to meet commitments. But do we now stay home with a sniffle or scratchy throat "just in case" we have COVID? IDK.

It will be after I ride it. I literally carry Lysol wipes wherever I go and wipe everything down.

Seriously though, I don't know. I read the same stuff on their websites about cleaning the trains..etc. I honestly don't even know how many commuters are still traveling on them at the moment. I imagine a lesser number.

The mayor said last week they are sanitizing buses and subways every 72 hours.

NY subway trains to be sanitized every 72 hours to prevent coronavirus spreading

In all, the heightened sanitation measures encompass 472 subway stations, 21 Staten Island Railway stations, 124 Long Island Railroad stations and terminals and more than 100 Metro-North train stations. Subway turnstiles, station handrails, MetroCard and ticket vending machines would be wiped down daily by MTA employees.

Must read re passengers in buses/other closed environments.. Passenger caught after positive person got off is possible

Those are the "people" whom I prefer most anyways. Although, we have a spoiled cat.

I am just going to work, coming home. Hoping for the best. But the denial I have seen is epic.

YES! NYC survived Sandy, survived power outages, survives snowstorms and big water main breaks that flood the streets and subways....NYC survived 9/11 and came out stronger.

Don't count out NYC.

Myopinion.

Yes, even the stock exchange shut down a few days after Sandy. Oh, yes, the 9/11 shut down included the bridges and tunnels!! There is nothing we can't handle in New York!

I'll pipe in, as a subway rider.

The trains have never been sanitary. That is not a new revelation.

But your hands can be sanitary (after you leave the station).

Apple now says you can use alcohol wipes to clean your phone, after a decade of insisting it will damage the touchscreen if you use anything other than “a soft, lint-free cloth”.

In an update to its support pages, the company has added a specific box-out to answer the question “Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my Apple product?” While the update is not specifically linked to Coronavirus, it comes as experts around the world highlight the need for sanitation to prevent further spread of the virus.

“Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may gently wipe the hard, nonporous surfaces of your Apple product, such as the display, keyboard, or other exterior surfaces,” the company says. “Don’t use bleach. Avoid getting moisture in any opening, and don’t submerge your Apple product in any cleaning agents.”

Users had previously been warned that disinfectant wipes may damage the oleophobic coating on the screen, which helps keep touchscreens free of fingerprint smudges.

Coronavirus Ireland: Trinity College Dublin closing lecture halls and other buildings amid virus threat

Trinity College Dublin is closing its lecture halls and other key buildings in the face of the growing threat from coronavirus.

In a drastic response to the spread of Covid-19, the university has announced that lectures will cease from today, and will be delivered online from 9am tomorrow for the rest of the semester.

However, tutorials, seminars and laboratory practicals, which involve smaller numbers, will continue to be given in the usual fashion.

Trump's economic team will brief senators today after markets plunged on coronavirus fears

Trump’s economic team will head to Capitol Hill this afternoon for closed-door policy luncheons with Republicans.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Director of the United States National Economic Council Larry Kudlow will try to sell Republicans on new economic relief measures after major losses on Wall Street Monday.

The President is not expected to attend the meeting today himself, but that could change. He told reporters yesterday that he would give a press conference signaling his priorities some time on Tuesday.

A coronavirus briefing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET, but it’s not clear if the President will attend.

I was just updated 2 of the 3 suspected cases are in negative pressure rooms awaiting test results. All travelled to hot spots. No idea where exactly as that was not disclosed. I assume the 3rd is home under self quarantine.
