I then tried to check on the number of visitors in the city......thousands...!!!

Colorado governor declares state of emergency to increase COVID-19 testing, implement paid sick leave
3 hours ago

“Polis said he spoke with Vice President Mike Pence and CDC Director Robert Redfield on Monday night and stressed the need for what he called “exponentially more” testing here. The state lab currently has 900 test kits, but Polis said Pence and Redfield had committed to send Colorado an additional 1,500 test kits this week.

Additionally, Polis said, Redfield and the CEO of LabCorp said that LabCorp-affiliated hospitals and doctor’s offices – of which Polis said many in Colorado are affiliated – can also perform testing for COVID-19, though the results take 3-4 days to be turned around instead of the 24 hours they take at the state lab. Polis said that both UCHealth and Children’s Hospital were also developing testing methods.”

[...]

“Colorado has not had a confirmed case of community spread of COVID-19 as of Tuesday morning, Polis said, but he added that there were “several candidate cases” where it’s possible and that the state was “expecting its first case in coming days.””

-I thought Denver already had a case of unknown origin mentioned yesterday?

Woman in her 30s??

—-

“Monday saw the announcement of four new cases, among people living in Denver, Arapahoe, Eagle and Larimer counties, as well as concerns about 13 Australians visiting Aspen who may have been exposed. Other cases previously were reported in Douglas, Summit and El Paso counties.”

[...]

“The tests conducted in Colorado are considered “presumptive positive.” The state has sent them to the CDC for official confirmation. The state health department has not yet heard back from the CDC on tests performed on samples taken last week.”

[...]

“Test results for another potential case, involving a Denver woman in her 70s, have proved inconclusive, meaning the state will send the results to the CDC for additional testing, said the state health department.

“Out of an abundance of caution, CDPHE will treat that individual as a positive case until we receive conclusive results,” the department said in a news release.

It is not clear how the woman was exposed to the new coronavirus, with health officials saying the case is under investigation.”“

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Two buses and a van with about 150 people total arrived at Travis Air Force Base Monday night. The busloads of Grand Princess cruise ship evacuees, possibly exposed to the novel coronavirus/COVID-19, pulled in to the base after 8 p.m. where they will be quarantined for the next two weeks.

About 1,000 people aboard the cruise ship, which docked in Oakland on Monday, are from California. Those who don’t have symptoms of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) were taken to either Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield or Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) spokesperson at Travis AFB said at least one of three buses standing by at the Port of Oakland was waiting to take Canadian passengers aboard the ship to Oakland International Airport.

For those on Travis AFB, they will be housed at the Westwind Inn, which is located at the military base as well as at a collection of family apartments that are nearby. Their temperatures will be taken twice daily. If symptoms develop, they will be transferred off base to a civilian hospital.

This is the same hotel that was used for quarantine for the past month and a half for American evacuees from Wuhan, China and then from a Princess cruise ship in Japan. The last 140 people from that quarantine were cleared a week ago. While those people have all returned home, the Westwind Inn was not turned back over to Travis AFB from the CDC.

Gee, I hope they don't allow them to go out for field trips like they did last time. This is not a very comforting thought.

Coronavirus patient visited San Antonio hotel, mall after she was ‘mistakenly released’ from isolation, officials say
Holy cow! Why would you think it was safe to get on that ship in light of what happened on the Diamond Princess?

Why would the cruise ship even contemplate allowing passengers on without at least disinfecting it and waiting at least 72 hours first? is it because of $$$?

Coronavirus is nursing homes' 'greatest threat' in years. Here's what they must do.

Quotes from article:

"This is the greatest threat to nursing home residents that we have seen in many years, if not ever," Dr. Michael Wasserman, president of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine, told NBC News.

The most worrisome example of what the virus can do in a nursing home has been at the Life Care Center. At least 18 residents there have died from the coronavirus in the past month, as well as one person who visited the facility.

Eleven other patients at the Life Care Center have passed away since the outbreak began, though it's unclear whether they, too, had been infected with the new virus. Dozens of other residents at the facility have tested positive for the illness.

Historically, fewer than seven residents pass away each month at the facility.

Several other facilities for older adults in the Seattle area have also reported cases.

Father of coronavirus patient broke quarantine. How can health officials enforce rules?
The new guidance is part of an urgent push to keep the virus out of other elder care center across the country. They advise staff to ask visitors whether they've had respiratory symptoms, such as a fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath, and then wash their hands before having any contact with the residents.

"This is unprecedented action that we're taking," Mark Parkinson, president of the AHCA and the NCAL, said during a media briefing Tuesday. He added that visitors should also be asked about recent international travel and whether they've been in other facilities with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus.

Within the past 24 hours, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released similar guidance to counter the spread of the coronavirus.

And, effectively immediately in the state of Washington, Gov. Jay Inslee announced Tuesday that children are temporarily banned from nursing homes, and any adult visitors must remain in resident rooms. The rules do not apply to end-of-life situations, however.

Visitors may also be required to wear protective equipment, such as gloves and gowns.

Coronavirus in the U.S.: Father of coronavirus patient broke quarantine.

Quotes from article:

The voluntary quarantine system that states are using to combat the spread of the new coronavirus in communities can work only if people follow it. So how can health officials be sure that people who agree to self-quarantine are at home?

The weaknesses in the system became apparent over the weekend in Missouri when a man broke quarantine and took one of his daughters to a dance.

The unidentified dad was already cutting the rug at a hotel Saturday when he got confirmation that his other daughter, the one who had stayed home, had tested positive for the virus, St. Louis County Executive Sam Page said during a news conference Sunday.

Father and daughter headed straight home, but Page said they are still trying to determine how many people they had been in contact with, and he warned that the dad would be slapped with a court order "to remain in the house by order of the sheriff" if he ventures out again.

"When we ask someone to quarantine and they tell us they will, we have to trust that," said Page, who is also a doctor. "'Quarantine' means stay in your home."

St. Louis County Public Health Department workers had been in touch with the family by phone every day since Thursday, when the daughter who has the disease went to get tested and the county told the family to "self-quarantine," Page said.

In this case, the daughter who contracted the virus "conducted herself responsibly and maturely," Page said. "The patient's father did not act consistently with the health department's instructions."

"The way the family has reacted to this situation is really a tale of two reactions but a study of how people should and should not react to the coronavirus," Page added.

The students are being told not to come back after spring break—online classes. People are going to be MAD about this. I think this is too much, personally. I know at my daughter’s university (the 1st to close for the rest of the quarter) one dept. cancelled finals and made all classes pass/fail at the last minute. Students and parents FLIPPED OUT. That is not the kind of class they registered for and worked for all quarter for to just get “credit.” They decided to change it back to graded. Thank goodness! I thought it seemed lazy on their part—like they were using the situation to just be done with it. Students (especially out of state and international) have paid a fortune for these classes and to be blown off and grades not counted? I don’t think so. I don’t think students paying for Harvard are going to let this fly either. Harvard prices for online classes? Nope!

It's a tough all, but universities have students living in residence halls in close proximity and the coronavirus can be transmitted efficiently and swiftly and be difficult to contain. Online classes is the best they can do to try to continue their courses. Our university put out a statement today to all faculty, staff and students that the university will be closed until Wednesday, March 18th to allow faculty time to figure out how to provide classes without face to face interaction, i.e. face to face classes are now cancelled indefinitely. Students are on spring break here this week, so they won't return now until next Wednesday, giving faculty a little bit of time to figure out how to continue with their classes online, or by skype, or by email, etc. Faculty have many options, as many of our senior faculty are not comfortable with online learning and technology. The alternative for Harvard, and other universities, would be incredibly disruptive for students who are graduating this year, or need a certain series of courses to continue to progress toward their degrees, so I don't think there is much choice. We are making special arrangements for our international students who are not able to go home during this closure. We are also concerned about students who may not have access to computers or laptops at home, and so we are looking into loaner laptops and possibly the generosity of our tech vendors who have lucrative (for them) contracts with the university.

Australia - There are now 116 cases of coronavirus across the country after more cases were confirmed in NSW and Queensland. More than 9000 people have been tested in NSW alone, the country's worst affected state with 61 cases. Three Australians have died so far as Sydney proves a hotspot.

The Morrison government has approved a $2.4 billion response to the coronavirus outbreak. The health package, which was revealed on Tuesday night, will allow Australians to bulk-bill phone hook-ups with GPs to diagnose coronavirus symptoms.

Health authorities will also establish up to 100 “pop-up” clinics, with each expected to handle 75 patients a day.
Aussie virus cases jump to 116
