I work in health care and have been taking elderberry all flu season. I swear by it. I rarely get sick and if I do, it's very mild and doesn't last long.

I think that if you post this kind of remedies, you should post the scientific data to support their use. Otherwise, you could be adding to the mounting pile of misinformation and quack remedies. jmo

Is elderberry located on cold medication shelves at Walmart or vitamins? Thanks. I am trying to minimize my time spent shopping the aisles.
@Chelly, I think it might be in both places (ditto for online). I found zinc with elderberry with the cold remedies and then elderberry by itself with the vitamins.

Travel and the Coronavirus: Answers to Your Top Questions

“Contemplating travel right now is confusing. Here is advice from experts on how to navigate the changing landscape.

I have a vacation planned. Is it safe to go?
This is up to you, experts said.

“People need to make an individual decision at this point, weighing the risks and benefits,” said Scott Weisenberg, an infectious disease doctor at New York University School of Medicine, and director of the university’s Travel Medicine Program.”

I think this may cover it. I was curious. Some may prefer more detail than the article provides. Googling has a lot.

While opinions vary on whether elderberry is helpful, most doctors believe it’s safe to have in small doses. But unripe or uncooked berries or flowers from the plant can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Larger amounts can cause even more serious poisoning.

Other things to keep in mind include:

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you shouldn’t take it.
  • Other parts of the elder tree, including the branches, twigs, leaves, roots, and seeds, are toxic. They contain a type of cyanide called glycoside.
  • People with immune problems might have reactions to elderberry.
  • If you get a rash or have trouble breathing after you have some, you might be allergic to it.
  • Because it’s a diuretic, be careful when you take it if you’re on medicines that make you pee more.
Talk with your doctor if you’re thinking about taking elderberry.

Possibly irresponsible and playing with fire, moo, which brings me to my next point/question.

Speaking of “playing with fire”, and not to beat a dead horse, but I’m still really struggling with my yoga thing. I go back and forth in my head saying, “the chances are slim”, and “what are you going to do, just stop your life?” But numbers are rising around here, and I seem to think, as we all do, that there are so many undiagnosed cases out there.

What it all comes down to imo is this: Are you willing to take the risk? If you are, then be prepared to face the consequences. Even if there is small chance, do you want to risk it. It’s not so much about me fearing the illness, but more about who is going to care for those I’m caring for now if I am hospitalized. I can’t take that chance. Not to mention the anxiety it causes me later wondering about “was I just exposed”, etc.

A really good friend told me something one time when I was unsure about whether to move out of state or not. She told me, “this doesn’t mean this is what you are doing forever, it just means this is what you are doing today”.

I’m using this analogy as I realize that testing is just now really starting to be done, and by all appearances, the numbers are expected to grow, to what extent, I/we don’t know exactly, but I’m telling myself to be patient, wait it out, see how things go, don’t take the risk. Then I see others going about their lives and I wonder if I’ve lost my mind.

Has anybody here cancelled their exercise classes yet and refraining? Again, this sounds like a “first world problem”, I realize.
What about Daytona Bike Week? Is it still going on this week?

Family of man, 60, who became the third British coronavirus victim to die claim they were barred from saying goodbye because he was in isolation, as the death toll hits six

He told BBC Bangla: 'Obviously I could not believe it because two months ago this thing didn't even exist and today it took away my father.

'It took me quite a long time to process the whole thing that I'm not going to be able to see him any more.

'When they broke the news to me that he passed away, obviously I could not believe it. We all burst into tears.

'I can't express how it feels to know that I won't be able to see him again.'

I feel so sorry for all the families who have lost loved ones. It is horrendous they can’t say goodbye but I understand why.

I'm debating as well. I have been going to the gym, once a week. I wipe the machines before and after, I go when way less people are there and I don't get close to them. I understand it's still a risk and I may change that. I have a yoga class scheduled tomorrow morning that I was going to attend, but listening to the way you worded the risk vs consequences, plus the temporariness of it all...I believe I will cancel and practice on my own living room floor.

"Several of the biggest and most popular dim sum restaurants and Cantonese banquet halls in Sunset Park [Brooklyn, NY] have closed this week in light of novel coronavirus fears — some of the first major closures after weeks of declining sales due to xenophobic associations between Chinese restaurants and the illness. Most of them are hoping to reopen, though it’s not clear when that will be possible....

Restaurants across the city are starting to see dips in business. But the Chinatowns in Manhattan, Flushing [Queens], and Brooklyn — as well as some Asian restaurants across the city — have had declines for weeks due to the association with the virus, even though none of the initial confirmed cases in NYC were people who came from China."

How would we expect college kids to act wiser than other adults?

First of all, they don’t feel that it affects them so they won’t take this seriously. That’s how young people are. But putting that aside, most other adults aren’t taking this seriously. They’re coughing and sneezing on people. Laughing about this. Calling people stupid. Wearing gas masks to mock it.

But we expect college kids to be more serious than everyone else?

Hey Gitana~
I expect my adult children to recognize the seriousness of this event. I mean when China came out wearing the "out of this world-space containment gear" were they over reacting? That was so creepy to initially try and process and watch in the early days. But, it is our new reality. and, this is scary for us all, so I do get some wanting to "stick their head in the sand".

I hope I raised my children to be accountable and respectful for their fellow life companions, people and pets. I do think adult age college kids can comprehend the seriousness of this and should be expected to be part of the solution. The solution is to slow this down! IMO
Just look at the doctors and professionals pleading with people to slow this down. Everyone has a responsibility to help. It is only human.

That's just my opinion though.

Fortunately I haven't been coming across too many stupid people in my daily life, so...but I know they are out there. We can keep trying to plan for the way we can be ahead of this and helpful to our family or neighborhoods if needed. Some of us are providing much needed information here~Thanks all who contribute

South Korea reports 242 new cases of coronavirus

Optimism that the pace of new Covid-19 cases is slowing in South Korea has been tempered by reports on Wednesday of a significant number of new infections and concern over a cluster of cases at a call centre in Seoul.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 242 new cases on Wednesday, up from 131 a day earlier, bringing the total to 7,755. Sixty people have died in the country, the KCDC added.

And yet somehow other countries have been testing thousands, every day, for weeks.
True. I don’t know how long they have been running the tests, if they started slow or not. You would think they would be able to help with the standards and protocols in testing if they are the same kits. I thought I had read the US was using their own kits, which I can see the point of as well. I can think of all sorts of reasons it would take time in the US possibly versus other areas but hopefully now that they are testing routinely it will be faster and faster.
If they are shipping these samples to the CDC, how are they getting there? I’m imagining some priority overnight service or would they have to ship ground from all over the US? I’ve not done biologics only toxins which aren’t environmentally sensitive for the most part. Does the government run a speciality plane service or are these flying commercial? Maybe this is something I would rather not think about.

I'm confused what the responsible thing the college students are supposed to do. It's not as if they all have been tested, and it's entirely possible that most of them haven't been exposed at all!

So what's "responsible" mean in this case? Serious question, btw, not snark. I'm confused what the college students are expected to do to be responsible.

MTA doubles subway station cleanings as NYC coronavirus cases climb

Transit crews currently cleaning stations each night will now perform a second scrubbing during the day.

“So every single night we clean and disinfect the stations — all of the touchpoints that the passengers and riders are likely to touch. Starting tomorrow, we’re going to do that twice.”

Each train car is still scheduled to be disinfected every three days.
