Coronavirus latest news: Europe braces for coronavirus-induced drug shortages

Europe, the US and India have all flagged possible drug shortages following China's coronavirus outbreak.

China produces around 80 per cent of the raw materials used in India's medicines, but with the country currently in the grip of an epidemic, production has slowed and stockpiles are running low.

As a result, prices of common drugs in India have skyrocketed due to disruptions causes by the outbreak. The price of paracetamol has jumped up by 40 per cent and common antibiotics by 70 per cent.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that over 30k a year die of flu related symptoms. Coronavirus is the least of my concerns. The mainstream media is running low of news stories, so ratings wise, this is a great story for them to continually play over and over. It is a form of fear 🤬🤬🤬🤬 in my opinion. Also a diversion tactic used by the media to often skip over other important news that is not friendly to report on because it may upset advertisers (for example, reporting and showing images of war is much more news worthy in my opinion and if people actually saw the outcome and deaths of civilians, we as a country would stop supporting and allowing our tax money to go toward military spending.

Burden of Influenza CDC website link
It's not either flu or Covid. Covid is a highly contagious virus with death rate higher than that of the flu (at least 10 fold higher as it appears now). So if it were to spread here, could be a lot more than 30k per year dying.

Could you please specify the “death rates” for COVID-19 and Influenza that you base this information on.

@ai6yrham

US State Department and CDC's strongly worded letters to #DiamondPrincess passengers still in Japan.. they have "placed your name on a federal list that will temporarily restrict your ability to travel by commercial aircraft into, outbound from, or within the United States."

Looks like they'll be flagged/caught if they try to come in by land, air or sea by the Border Patrol and Immigration. Another example of the US being "prepared" before it happened that they can set this up so quickly.

not who you were replying to, but typical numbers being tossed about indicate flu mortality is 0.1-0.2% and COVID-19 is typically cited as 2-3%.

It is 24/7 corporate news fear mongering. Zika virus, Swine flu, ebola, SARS, etc Until people start dropping like flies on the street, I will not prescribe and be a propagandist and spread fear. People get virus' every day all over the world.

ALSO, MOST IMPORTANTLY.... The people connected to the pharmaceutical industry are the same people sitting on the WHO panel (World Health Organization). So if they decide to declare this a "pandemic" they can reap big rewards because they will get contract after contract and reap billions of dollars from those contracts to scam money out of the WHO. Not the first time in history and certainly not the last.

Here comes medical martial law.

This was stated by the US Embassy in their letter to the Diamond Princess US passengers when they were given the choice to depart and fly back or stay. As far as the Japanese ministry, they will allow those passengers who have negative tests to begin debarking once their tests are confirmed.

It was sad that the US rushed the people to get on the planes before all of them actually had the test results back. If the tests would have been back and checked before boarding the plane, the 14 confirmed positive cases would have not been allowed on board (these are the ones now quarantined in Nebraska).

I've been following the American who is still on the boat. He also had posted on his twitter account a similar notice from Japan about leaving after the quarantine ends. It was dated Feb 18th and signed by an official from Japan.

I sincerely hope everyone is able to leave that sick ship soon, including the crew. Even if you aren't allowed back into your country for a while, you are away from the source of the Coronavirus.

I'm not @jjenny, but for those that have been on the thread it's been accepted widely that COVID is worse than typical flu at this time. (see videos and pressers and scientific reports upthread). Most recently, Per WHO daily meeting yesterday transcription

"It appears that this virus is not as deadly as MERS and SARS. More than 80% have mild disease. In 14% causes pneumonia and shortness of breath. 5% have critical issues such as respiratory failure, septic shock and multi-organ failure. 2% the virus is fatal," * <<<--These numbers will change as we move through the phases of the outbreak

And for the flu rates in US....

Influenza Deaths per 100,000 population: 2.0 (my calculation is therefore 0.002% which is much much much lower) based on CDC US FastStats

*But as we have been discussing for days on the thread, the numbers for COVID are too early to tell as the most severe cases went to the hospitals early in the outbreak, and the milder cases weren't all documented. And of course, there are treatments for the flu and vaccine prevention for high risk group, for which COVID doesn't have yet. Again, this will change the mortality number.

But these are the latest.... with the * notation to consider

I disagree

I fully believe the US Government /CDC required the COVID-19 test results in advance of transporting them, and they were fully prepared with isolation units to transport the 14 people testing positive. I do not believe any of this was premature or inappropriate.

I do not believe the government would deny them transport to US medical facilities unless they were in extremis in a Japanese hospital and transport would be too dangerous.

Also to make note that reliable, fast Influenza testing is widely available in the US and you are going to have a great many more true negatives tested and reported.

Perfect example of fear mongering. Mainstream media earns big money from its advertisers when more viewers watch. And how do you get more viewers? Easy, present them with fear.

Council of Europe condemns “unjustified scare” over swine flu

The Council of Europe has heavily criticised the World Health Organization, national governments, and EU agencies for their handling of the swine flu pandemic.

The parliamentary assembly of the council—the international organisation that protects human rights and the rule of law in Europe—published a draft of a report that reviewed how the H1N1 pandemic was handled.

National governments, WHO, and EU agencies had all been guilty of actions that led to a “waste of large sums of public money, and unjustified scares and fears about the health risks faced by the European public,” says the report.

The conclusion came in the parliamentary assembly’s social, health and family affairs committee report published on 4 June.

The report was prepared by Paul Flynn, socialist member of the assembly and Labour MP for Newport West and approved by the committee ahead of a plenary debate at the end of this month. It says there was overwhelming evidence that the seriousness of the pandemic was vastly over-rated by WHO, which led to a …

But perhaps not too rushed to take Halls cough drops and aspirin/tylenol/ibuprophen to reduce fever and rid of symptoms which they were told ahead of time would have disqualified them prior to boarding the buses? ;););)

Folks will do what folks feel like they gotta do in situations where you can self report iykwim

Yes. I think this was the proper thing to do as the cruise ship situation seemed to be deteriorating.

If I were on there, I’d be worried about a very ill-timed Norovirus outbreak to increase the misery

Absolutely. I think it was last Thursday or Friday during the WHO daily presser that they said this was #2 on this list of wants/needs from front line healthcare workers in China. MOO
