People who are saying I'm dramatic and to read the facts. The FACTS are that this is a NEW strain of corona virus that we have never dealt with before and so what is learnt from it will have to be written into the medical books. All the known facts on corona virus do not involve this newly mutated strain. Nothing was ever known about it until its initial outbreak recently. This is a new 1 for the medical world and it is VERY worrying. They are the FACTS! X

It’s also likely that person-to-person spread will continue to occur, including in the United States. Widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the United States would translate into large numbers of people needing medical care at the same time. There was a steady trajectory upwards at a pretty steady clip and then suddenly it stopped. At this point I think China is just lying. I don't trust the stats coming out. You are right. It doesn't make sense. As soon as China panicked and said people needed to consider going back to work because it was affecting the economy so badly the diagnoses slowed down. Meanwhile they are still hauling people off to quarantine camps whether they are really sick or not.

I think we're going to have to start watching the figures from other countries. But how competent are those countries at tracking any of this?

I agree that the numbers from China are all but worthless, but if I’m not mistaken, the WHO is the one that stated they had made that determination after their visit to China??? So yeah, Just doesn’t compute for me. Especially given that the R0 factor (how fast it transmits) is really high. And the R0 factor isn’t a simple math problem as its exponential In nature.

Anyone from the medical community want to chime in? For the WHO to announce that it’s already peaked in Hubei, I feel like there’s something about a virus “peaking” that I’m missing. I’m assuming that I just don’t understand the medical definition of peaking. Because if it’s as straight forward as it sounds - it just doesn’t add up for me at all!!

Insert side rant:

As a (now retired) teacher, I’ve always gotten irate about parents sending their kids to school when they are sick and I have responded with passionate letters about this to please keep your kids at home when they have strep and flu. You would be amazed how many parents do NOT keep their kids at home. It is very selfish and aggravating IMO that I have had to tell parents to do this over and over over the years. We are not baby sitters because you have to work so you drop your kids off at school. Not to mention the kids aren’t exactly great at learning when they’re not feeling well so the purpose of education is ultimately defeated. The kids need to be at home resting for their own well being.

Here’s a main reason for me: Not only do none of us want to be sick, kids AND staff, but now you’re also messing with people’s income who get sick and can not work. If they are the breadwinner of the family, then this poses a huge stress and problem if they or their family members end up being out for long periods of time and don’t have sick days, etc.

End rant. Thanks for listening. These are the types of people I worry about, selfish people. I’ve seen it over and over.

I realize people have to work, but this financial pressure is also what makes people not stay at home. This will be a big issue, moo. People not feeling well but going to work anyway because they have to pay the bills.

ETA: This is another reason why yesterday's CDC Advisory is so important, because it touched on this, workplaces being prepared, missed attendance, lost income, schools, etc.

So, I sort of have an issue with this. They should shelter in place. Hunker down. Because, coming here is just making it likely to spread the disease here.

No sense hunkering down for a few months or a semester in a foreign country using foreign resources. They are better off coming back on US soil to quarantine in self-isolation for 2 weeks, then the students can continue their studies here.

They are US citizens who do not, at this time, have the virus so as of now for all we know, they won't be spreading the disease here. We can't close our borders to our own citizens who are not affected by the virus.

So far, according to the last WHO briefing and info coming out of China, there have not been any mutations, but in the Q and A session, Dr. Mike said this certainly could be something that becomes like a seasonal flu.

Dozens of passengers allowed off the Diamond Princess cruise ship after testing negative for coronavirus ARE now showing symptoms

Officials said they contacted 813 former passengers of the vessel who had previously tested negative for the virus, and found 45 are now showing symptoms.

All of those with symptoms have been asked to contact doctors and take new tests to check whether they are also infected.

Hawaii doctors flagged 8 for coronavirus symptoms; none tested

Hawaii doctors have alerted the Department of Health at least 8 times about patients they thought could have coronavirus, but none of them were tested.

Hawaii is among just a handful of U.S. states and territories that have not submitted samples to the CDC.

The state Department of Health’s daily update still shows no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hawaii. There are 61 people self-monitoring (55 on Oahu, 4 Hawaii Island,1 Maui, 1 is Kauai) but none are in quarantine.

Currently nationwide all testing must be done by the CDC at its mainland facility. As of today the state of Hawaii still has not submitted any samples, while 43 other states and territories have sent in a total 479 for testing. The CDC says 14 tested positive, 412 tested negative, and 53 are still pending results.

Virus shutters 2,500-student school

Phraharuthai Donmuang School with 2,500 students in Don Muang district of Bangkok has been closed for 14 days after a pupil found to be among the three new Covid-19 cases attended classes there since Monday.

The grandparents took the boy to school on Monday before the elderly relatives tested positive later on the same day.

The boy was admitted to a hospital for treatment. About 100 other people came into contact with the quarantined people and they were advised to avoid crowded areas.

Caution, cancelations mark Ash Wednesday in time of virus

At the Vatican, Pope Francis held his general audience as usual in St. Peter’s Square and sent his prayers to victims of the virus and the medical personnel treating them.

A handful of the thousands of people gathered wore face masks to protect against the virus.

This much I know. Nothing I bought will end up in the waste bin. I have too much pain not to use the Tylenol before it expires, I will not ever suddenly be allergy free, so the benedryl and Zyrtec will be used. Unfortunately, I can count on another cold before the mucinex expires. Soaps, cleaners, laundry detergent - we’re not suddenly going to live dirty when this is over. And TP? Well, no expiration date.

Expiration dates are pretty much meaningless.

A South Korean flight attendant who has been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus may have serviced trips between Seoul and Los Angeles last week.

South Korea’s CDC said that a female flight attendant who serviced a flight Feb. 15 from Tel Aviv to Seoul had tested positive for the virus. On board the flight was a church group returning from a pilgrimage to Israel; 30 other infections have been connected to the group so far.

The South Korean media outlets reported that the same flight attendant had serviced flights KE017 and KE012 on Feb. 19 and 20 to and from Los Angeles International.

Korean Air announced it was closing its operations center at Incheon Airport to disinfect the premises.

It appears more colleges are requiring their students to return home to the USA from South Korea and Italy:

Any University of Southern California students studying abroad in South Korea or parts of Italy affected by the coronavirus outbreak are required to return home.
