Cruise company 'extremely disappointed' to be denied access to port

MSC Cruises, the company that owns a cruise ship that was earlier denied access to a port in Jamaica, is “extremely disappointed” by the decision, according to a statement on the firm's website.

Similarly, the decision by authorities in the Cayman Islands to refuse disembarkation "was made without even reviewing the ship’s medical records," the statement added.

"In both instances, the ship was effectively turned away simply based on fears," the company said.

The ship is now on its way to Cozumel, Mexico, its next scheduled port of call

Coronavirus updates: U.S. soldier in South Korea tests positive as global toll rises

Countries that intend to refuse cruise ships should put out an announcement with a timeline. If cruises cannot dock, they need to change the itinerary.

I think it's very reasonable that ships are not allowed to stop at small islands that are incapable of dealing with the numbers of sick that will result from one infected person.

Singapore Charges Chinese Couple for Impeding Virus Tracing Efforts

Singapore has charged a married couple from China under the Infectious Diseases Act for providing false information and obstructing coronavirus contact tracing.

The pair were charged on Tuesday and the case will be heard in court Friday.

According to the release:
  • The husband arrived in Singapore, where his wife lives, on Jan. 22, and tested positive for coronavirus Jan. 31. The wife was issued a quarantine order the next day.
  • The two were charged for providing false information about their movements and whereabouts from Jan. 22-29; the wife also allegedly provided false information while under quarantine.
  • The ministry says it established the pair’s true movements “through detailed investigations.”
  • Anyone convicted for a first offense under the act can be fined as much as S$10,000 and/or imprisoned for as long as 6 months.

This is shades of exactly what I’m worried about in the US - IDIOTS. I alluded to this earlier re: parents who send their kids to school with the flu and strep.

I just have this terrible feeling that there are going to be idiots who don’t follow recommendations and rules, and end up causing more problems for a LOT of other people.

I’m reminded of this time I was in a building which was under evacuation due to a gas problem. LE and the Fire Department came in and said “everyone out, now, this place could blow any second...” Well some IDIOT goes to light a cigarette! The fireman says “Don’t light that!” You know what the guy said? He said, “You can’t tell me not to smoke!!” I started running for my life away from the building expecting it to explode behind me like in the movies. I remember thinking to myself “OMG, this guy is going to get all of us killed!!”

I’m also reminded of the “Towering Inferno” scene where the guy causes the helicopter to crash that was trying to help evacuate people in an orderly manner.

There are so many idiots in this world, and many who will rebel, defy...moo.

In Dr. Nancy’s briefing there is the mention of Law Enforcement agencies possibly being overwhelmed (paraphrasing). This could be due to a variety of issues but I bet they will also be overwhelmed trying to contain idiots. JMO moooo

11 hospitals and 100 general medical offices means they are way ahead of the US here. Drastically more so when you compare our population size.
My understanding is that we have a process in the US. It starts at the local health departments who submit samples of testing by doing surveillance of hospitals and medical professionals. They are not submitting samples.

Delta is temporarily reducing the number of weekly flights it operates between the U.S. and Seoul-Incheon (ICN), South Korea, due to global health concerns related to coronavirus, the airline said Wednesday in a news release.

From Feb. 29 through April 30, the carrier will suspend service between Minneapolis/St. Paul and ICN, with the last flight departing MSP for ICN on Feb. 28 and departing ICN for MSP on Feb. 29.

Delta will also reduce to five times weekly its services between ICN and Atlanta, Detroit and Seattle through April 30. The airline’s new service from Incheon to Manila, previously scheduled to begin March 29, will now start on May 1. Full schedule details are available on the Delta website.

I think we need to prepare for the prospect that eventually countries with initial outbreaks will be unwilling or unable to put scarce resources into containment efforts. If containment works so poorly, they may feel it is better to save the resources for afterward.

Modern medical technology is miraculous, but it is very unevenly distributed across the globe.

If COVID-19 takes hold in the US, it will be bad. We have a workforce that is trained to go to work if they are able to drag themselves in. At the lower end, people risk losing their jobs for absences and at the higher end, people risk being called "not serious about their job."

no updates:

A South Korean flight attendant who has been diagnosed with the novel coronavirus may have serviced trips between Seoul and Los Angeles last week.

South Korea’s CDC said that a female flight attendant who serviced a flight Feb. 15 from Tel Aviv to Seoul had tested positive for the virus. On board the flight was a church group returning from a pilgrimage to Israel; 30 other infections have been connected to the group so far.

The South Korean media outlets reported that the same flight attendant had serviced flights KE017 and KE012 on Feb. 19 and 20 to and from Los Angeles International.

Korean Air announced it was closing its operations center at Incheon Airport to disinfect the premises.

Yeah, I find it concerning that the US appears to be putting a lot of faith in self quarantining. With so many stories of asymptomatic individuals testing positive, I would think that now is the time to submit random testing. The CDC has stated they currently don’t have a back log, so in my thinking, they should take advantage of that while they can.

Trump to hold White House news conference on coronavirus Wednesday

Trump complained that, in his view, media outlets were "doing everything possible to make the Caronavirus [sic] look as bad as possible."

Note: Posting this as a point of information about the news conference. Please don't turn this into political discussion. TIA

The first case in Latin America was confirmed by Brazil's health ministry. A hospital in Sao Paulo flagged the possible infection of a 61-year-old man who recently visited Italy. Health Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta told journalists at a
news conference that the government has already taken measures to tackle the epidemic prior to its arrival in Brazil.

The disease is believed to have originated in a market selling wildlife in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year and has infected about 80,000 people and killed more than 2,700, the vast majority in China.''

The US is closely monitoring pharmaceuticals made in China, health secretary says

DHHS Secretary Alex Azar said the FDA is closely monitoring pharmaceuticals made in China during the coronavirus outbreak.

“The latest fruits of that work show that there are 20 pharmaceutical products we are aware of to date at FDA where either the entire product is made in China, or there is a critical active ingredient that is solely sourced within China, so those would be, obviously, the most targeted to be concerned about," he said.

Azar added, “I'm told there are two manufacturers in Hubei province of pharmaceuticals, but fortunately the manufacturer has a large, large stockpile of supply of advanced production there, but we have to be very alert to this and we have to be candid that there could be disruptions in supplies.”

U.S. urges Americans to "exercise increased caution" if visiting Italy

The U.S. State Department issued a Travel Advisory on Wednesday, echoing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advice for Americans to use caution if visiting Italy, but saying it was not yet recommended to avoid travel to the country.

"Italian government authorities are working to identify how and where these people were infected," the State Department said in its Advisory on Wednesday, referring travelers to the CDC's Level 2 Travel Health Notice for the country.
