Iran’s Health Minister Saeed Namaki has announced that Friday prayers will not be held this week in coronavirus-affected cities in Iran.

Congregational Friday prayers is a mainstay of public life in Iran.

Kuwait sends evacuation plane to Italy

Kuwait Airways has said on its Twitter account it will send a plane to the city of Milan in northern Italy to evacuate citizens.

Italy has registered more than 400 coronavirus cases and 12 deaths.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar confirmed a new case of the coronavirus in the U.S. "Coming into this hearing, I was informed that we have a 15th confirmed case, the epidemiology of which we are still discerning," he testified before a House panel. The new case brings the total number of cases in the U.S. to 60. The CDC has separated out 45 confirmed infections in people evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan or from Wuhan, China from its official case count. —Feuer

Coronavirus: 700 under voluntary quarantine in NY after China travel

and, from an article on 2/19:

California said there are more than 5,400 such people in the state.

In Washington state, 745 people have been asked to self-quarantine.

Georgia health officials identified about 200 travelers.

Michigan said more than 300 people were referred for monitoring.

In Virginia, 138 residents are being monitored.

A total of 27 people are under voluntary self-quarantine in Iowa.

North Dakota has 10.

Alabama, Indiana, Massachusetts and Texas are also monitoring travelers, but they declined to provide exact numbers, which change daily.

NYPD gives cops thousands of face masks in preparation for coronavirus

The department is handing out “thousands upon thousands of gloves, masks and wipes” to city cops to prepare them for an outbreak should it hit Big Apple streets, officials announced Wednesday.

“We put out disinfectant to each and every command. As of now there’s nothing in New York City. But we’ve sat down with counter-terrorism, our doctors, and [discussed] what the threat may be,” the NYPD’s Chief of Department Terence Monahan told reporters during a briefing Wednesday.

“So we’re prepared, our men and women are prepared if and when it hits the city. The equipment’s already been out. We have a lot more in store.”

Monahan said the supplies have been distributed to all of the NYPD’s commands, including officers in patrol, housing and transit units.

The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips and her husband, former England rugby player Mike Tindall, will not be self-isolating despite returning from a skiing trip in northern Italy, where a coronavirus outbreak has been spreading.

Phillips and Tindall have come back from a trip to Bormio, a town in the Lombardy region of the Alps in northern Italy.

The couple’s management said the pair were following government guidelines and medical advice, although they currently did not have any symptoms of the infection and so would not be going into self-isolation.

Semester at Sea denied entry to Seychelles due to coronavirus fears

The MV World Odyssey, part of Semester at Sea, an educational cruise program with hundreds of American students on board, was denied entry to Seychelles as it diverted from China due to coronavirus warnings.

“We diverted from China, avoided Malaysia and India, which were on our itinerary. Seychelles is the only country that has denied entry to our ship. We received word from the minister of health there that they were denying visitors from Iran, South Korean, China and Italy," said Layne Hanson, vice president of public affairs for Semester at Sea.

Hanson added that they were denied despite not having any medical issues on the ship, and despite not having visited any of those countries.

Norway detects its first case

Norway's Public Health Agency said that one person had tested positive for coronavirus and was being kept isolated at home, in what was the country's first confirmed case.

The person had returned from China late last week, but did not appear ill and was unlikely to infect others, the agency said.
