I’m really behind. Just spent an hour trying to find refill filters for my mask that are NOT from China. No easy task.

Coronavirus updates live: Countries prepare as outbreak spreads
Updated Feb. 26, 2020, 8:31 PM MST

“The coronavirus outbreak has spread from China to at least 40 countries around the world, affecting markets and disrupting travel. A recent increase in cases in Italy, Iran and South Korea have heightened concerns about the ability to contain the spread of the virus.

Cases in the U.S. have been limited, though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that Americans should prepare for the spread of the coronavirus in communities.”

California resident is first potential community-spread coronavirus case

"”We have been anticipating the potential for such a case in the U.S., and given our close familial, social and business relationships with China, it is not unexpected that the first case in the U.S. would be in California," said Dr. Sonia Angell, director of the California Department of Public Health and state public health officer. "That’s why California has been working closely with federal and local partners, including health care providers and hospitals, since the outbreak was first reported in China — and we are already responding.””

“This would be the first case in the state not associated with the Diamond Princess cruise ship or with someone who had returned to Northern California from visiting China.”

New US coronavirus case may be 1st from unknown origin
''NEW YORK - A new coronavirus case in California could be the first in the U.S. that has no known connection to travel abroad or another known case, a possible sign the virus is spreading in a U.S. community, health officials said.''

''They said they have begun the process of tracking down people who the patient has been in contact with, a process known as contact tracing.''

Coronavirus: Here's why local governments are declaring emergencies, and what that means for you - CNN
''Why emergency declarations now?
Tuesday, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease, said she's expecting the coronavirus to spread.
"It's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness," Messonnier said.
"We are asking the American public to work with us to prepare in the expectation that this could be bad," she said.''

No reason to be dramatic about it happening in the USA. That sort of transmission is happening around the planet. South Korea, Italy, Iran ... who is next with the outbreak? All of Europe? The USA?

Hopefully rich people in infected areas will leave Canada off their list of national health care lists.

I basically just thought about what would we need if we had to quarantine like the people in Wuhan. What would we want if out family had a flu. I've been making a list of cleaning supplies, medicine, foods etc and working on purchasing them. So instead of having one bottle of dish detergent or laundry detergent I have 3 or whatever I determined we needed. How much peanut butter would we need, butter, cheese, grains, meat, toilet paper, all based on what we currently use. I decided my goal of how many weeks to prepare for and how much I needed of each item and have been buying as I can. If we don't need to quarantine or there are not issues with supplies then I have the things we needed anyway.

The one thing I bought that I'd normally not buy was powdered milk and powdered cheese. My kids love the powdered cheese though. We've not tried the milk yet. I'd been eyeing getting some for a couple of weeks and today our Walmart only had 3 bags left so I went ahead and got them.
A lot of this stuff is the kind of things I stock up on in the winter in case we get snowed in/lose power anyway. Evaporated milk is one of them, yeast to make our own bread, and that sort of thing. That’s why comments that make it sound like we’re “prepper nuts” are so ridiculous. I’m just doing what my Midwestern mom taught me to do in the 70s - be prepared to be stuck home for a while in the winter. When I lived in the South, I loaned a lot of stuff out to friends who were unprepared for ice storms that caused power outages that lasted for days and weeks, too. Nobody thought we were prepper nuts, either, I assure you.

What day did they arrive @ Travis?

Notes

Incubation period = X in this case?

My advice, even if you can't get the right kind, get whatever N95 or N100 mask you can find. Some protection is better than none, and if it comes to everyone masking up, it helps you to keep your hands from your face. Also, think about a situation where you might have to go to the hospital or clinic and they have mandatory masking in place, but have a shortage of masks...this could be a real scenario...then you are covered in that case.
Better to have some and not need them, then none and need...

I saw an amazing video on YouTube today of the volunteers in Wuhan, China who are risking getting the virus to feed and look after pets that have been left behind by their owners. I can’t begin to express the gratitude I feel for these wonderful individuals. The video is by The Guardian and it is called The Coronavirus Cat Rescuer of Wuhan.

Sorry behind how obviously Travis has something to do with it? Big coincidence right? Going back to read.

I saw that. I meant to send it your way. :)

"At this time, the patient's exposure is unknown. It's possible this could be an instance of community spread of COVID-19, which would be the first time this has happened in the United States. Community spread means spread of an illness for which the source of infection is unknown. It's also possible, however, that the patient may have been exposed to a returned traveler who was infected," the CDC explained in their statement.

The case was caught by the public health system in Northern California.”

Off topic, but not off-topic:

I was about town today and there was a likely-mentally-ill man walking on the sidewalk across from me. He was wearing a full-on biohazard mask and yelling out through the mask “Get away! You’re too close!!”

It was an odd moment for me. I simultaneously a) felt sympathy for him, b) wondered if he actually had the coronavirus, and c) wanted to ask him where he was able to find the mask.

Seeing stuff that the new California patient had been on a ventilator for a week at another hospital before he was transferred to UC Davis...seeing it in Ian Mackay's twitter feed but not found anything to link to other than that...if you search for Ian go with MackayIM ...he's a virologist from Australia

Is politico an accepted WS source? I think so- just found this:

California coronavirus patient hospitalized at least a week before diagnosis

I’m not sure I have the words right now to describe how I feel about this..... the patient has been hospitalized for the past week and we are just now finding out they have coronavirus.

“The patient was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento from another hospital in Northern California a week ago with a suspected viral condition, according to the email sent by David Lubarsky, vice chancellor of human health sciences and CEO for UC Davis Health, and Brad Simmons, interim CEO of the medical center. The Davis Enterprise was first to report on the email Wednesday.

The patient had not yet been diagnosed, but UCD staff considered the patient as a possible coronavirus case and asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing, the UCD leaders wrote. However, the patient did not immediately get tested for coronavirus because they didn't fit the existing CDC criteria.

The CDC eventually ordered a test Sunday and confirmed Wednesday that the patient was infected, according to the email. It was not the hospital's first coronavirus case, "and because of the precautions we have had in place since this patient's arrival, we believe there has been minimal potential for exposure here at UC Davis Medical Center," the email stated.

UC Davis spokespeople would not comment Wednesday evening, citing confidentiality reasons.”

I had that same thought when I let my local community page on Facebook know about the 20 packages of masks I didn’t buy at the local hardware store, all N95. I got absolutely blasted about being fear mongering. It’s not like I have any $ involved, if people want to know where to find masks that aren’t inflated on price I thought I was being helpful. I’ll take some protection over none as long as I’m aware of the risks.

I think this UC Davis patient is the one Trump referred to as "pretty sick" when he wanted to say that everyone was recovering.

MOO on that though.

Knowing that the patient is a Solano County resident, I'll speculate that the hospital they were in earlier was a Solano County hospital. I think we'll find out which hospital when we possibly see medical staff at a Solano hospital diagnosed with the virus themselves. I hope I'm wrong on that though.
