I don't mean to be an alarmist, but it sounds like there are a lot of pockets of suspected virus in the USA, yet the international number count don't reflect those numbers. Italy and Iran had outbreaks, now London,

Asia is hooped, how bad is it? Do 24 year olds just get really sick, sicker than they've ever been before, and tail off with brochitis, barely avoiding pneumonia - does the lifespan tailspin mean 24 year olds get this contagious virus and live to 60, 70 instead of 90, 100?

I didn’t see “lifespan tailspin” quoted in the attached, so can’t see it in context, but I believe that term is in reference to the virus itself. Basically means that trace amounts of virus remain in an individual even after they have hit the point of being “recovered”

MOO my guess is that 95% of those folks buying are "normal N95 particulate masks", and not the ones which keep out viral particles MOO. CDC has list of FDA masks for workers in non-hospital fields. The list of OSHA n95 masks are for painters and those folks that have industry needs for particles, but are not the viral n95 masks?

I don't think I've seen any indication of which model number works against viruses. One number said something about being good against TB, but I think that's the only medical reference I've seen on any of them.

I suppose that's why they's not being promoted as a full-on prevention device, just something to lower your risk.

“The woman, a resident of Osaka, in western Japan, tested positive on Wednesday after developing a sore throat and chest pains, the prefectural government said in a statement, describing her as being in her forties. She first tested positive in late January and was discharged from hospital after recovering on Feb. 1, according to the statement.

"Once you have the infection, it could remain dormant and with minimal symptoms, and then you can get an exacerbation if it finds its way into the lungs," said Philip Tierno Jr., Professor of Microbiology and Pathology at NYU School of Medicine.

Tierno said much remains unknown about the virus. "I'm not certain that this is not bi-phasic, like anthrax," he said, meaning the disease appears to go away before recurring.”

Non-political statement also. The first 30 minutes done well. Then perhaps a mic drop would have been good to not have the last 60 minutes of political vs. on subject. MOO as I was interested in the disease and handling in US, and learned that in first 30.

Yes, that would be devastating if those who obtained this virus do not have a long immunity. That is something that I don't think we even mentioned in the first thread as to what the worst virus would be. That is one biggie MOO. Perhaps that person was an immunocompromised or elderly person that could not do a proper immune response.

If so, one of the vaccines isn't gonna work for that person. And may need herd immunity for such.

Wonder how many folks still don't get flu shot, or refuse to get measles shot when an outbreak that there is a thread here for.

I listened to the WHO press release. In light of what has happened in CA with this latest case being untraceable to a known infection...


I really felt like as Dr T. was articulating what countries need to be ready to do (lots of testing, move quickly, protect health care workers, etc) that the US has absolutely fallen flat on most (or all) of his points.


I’m so disappointed in our country’s lack of a response. I can see absolutely no excuse.

finally, non politically, I was really hoping the person to spearhead this response would be someone with experience in pandemics/infectious disease/something. I don’t know that our VP quite fits that criteria.

I can't figure out why all the pandemic lists include water and batteries. Those are hurricane power outage necessities. Why do people need to worry about a power out in a virus pandemic?

Was thinking about the water and batteries being added to the prep list. It doesn’t make sense in regards to infrastructure, but the workforce that keeps the water and electricity flowing could get hit with the virus.

And it may not be at the plant itself, but could be upstream. For example, coal miners may get hit hard as many of them already deal with lung issues. Major drop in coal production would eventually impact power companies that are reliant upon coal, etc,..

To you and anyone who thinks they are power posting. Please do not think that. We need you! Things are moving so fast and it is needed. Many of us have different links we share and focus on, and are only on at certain times of the day.

I appreciate ALL so called "power posters" on this thread, and I think @JerseyGirl who is mod understands that also. No worries, again, thanks to all that are doing such for the rest to follow after you have culled for us.

Places to avoid while this is going on? The economic impact IMO will be severe.

Here's a few on my immediate thought list. Please add your ideas... Planes, trains cruise ships. Buffets and salad bars, Casinos, sporting events, movie theaters, Costco and Walmart. Swap meets and large Farmer's markets. Large busy restaurants, large music concerts, emergency rooms, large parties and conventions.
I am talking about avoiding, not banning.
As this virus seems to be moving rapidly, these are my thoughts.
Am I over thinking this?

Adding to your excellent list:

*Unless absolutely necessary, DO NOT use public restrooms.

*When possible, avoid hair/nail salons and/or spas where stylists/techs come in direct personal contact with clients.

*Carry disposable gloves to the supermarket and use them when selecting fresh produce. If you don't have surgical gloves, you can cover your hand/s with plastic produce bags that are available in most markets.

*While it doesn't replace frequent, thorough handwashing, carry small bottles of hand sanitizer in your purse and car.

The specific routes she flew are important, but I’d say any route that that specific aircraft took would also be germane.

Flight attendants are ALL over an airplane- Touching and restocking stuff, using the overhead phone/loudspeaker, touching the safety demo stuff, etc etc etc.

I hope they thoroughly disinfect the plane. Although it could be too late for people who were already flying in it- even if they weren’t on that flight attendant’s flights!

Strict disinfecting should be the standard now after every flight. For all planes. But I doubt they’ll do it. I don’t think they have time.

It’s hard not to go to markets and for me, I have to go to court. I’m asthmatic so I get this I’m dead. I want to wear a mask in crowded areas but I don’t want to look crazy.

The truth should be told. NO. There is not a vaccine. None will be available in the near future. We are not near to having one.

When available, a vaccine should be available for all. How dumb would it be to vaccine only part of the population and allow a virus to continue to spread? What talk is this that some people may not be able to afford it? Can you imagine what panic this would cause?

Masks should be available for all. Rumor has it they are stockpiled.

People should be told NOT to go to a clinic or hospital but each state, city, county should be telling people who are suspect where to report.

Online and public posts should be out there with instructions how to pause the spread, what to avoid, how to continue if it's in your area.

No. I am not depending on the government for all. I have insurance, masks, food, meds. However, everyone in our society is not educated about the virus and is not up-to-date or taking things seriously.

Masks SHOULD be stockpiled for Hospitals and their healthcare workers who are going to handle the COVID-19 patients.

A woman working as a tour bus guide in Japan has tested positive for the coronavirus for a second time, Osaka's prefecture government said on Wednesday.

The first case of reinfection to be reported in the country comes amid mounting fears over the spread of coronavirus there. The number of confirmed cases in Japan has risen to more than 800 -- nearly 700 of which were reported on a cruise liner quarantined off Tokyo earlier this month -- and seven people have died.

The 40-year-old woman, an Osaka resident, tested positive on Wednesday after developing chest pains and a sore throat, the prefectural government said in a statement. She first tested positive in late January and was discharged from hospital on February 1, after being treated for symptoms at a hospital in Osaka.

The Japanese Ministry of Health guidelines state that coronavirus patients must get tested twice before their release.

The woman had contact with tourists from Wuhan while working as a tour guide in mid-January. An Osaka prefectural official told CNN that she did not attend work, wore a mask at all times and did not have close contact with anyone while she was not in a medical facility.

It's much more likely it will resemble other coronaviruses, no one has a built up immunity to
the common cold even though we've all had it.

Excellent post and spot on MOO. Thank you so much for putting into words concisely for the rest of us. When the first wave hits, hospitals and doctors etc need to get into the groove as to how to handle, and may be overwhelmed with initiating how to handle. Getting "the curve" flattened out give a learning curve to handle on an ongoing basis. Best to hunker down if it hits a town near you during the first wave?

I woud also like to add:

When the first wave breaks, the CDC has it's act in gear and does not deny testing to those who don't have the specific contacts the CDC required.

Because, as we are seeing in other countries, COVID-19 is popping up in people who are not in the "close contact / travel / family relationship" category.

I think CDC really fouled up badly on this California case and I have to think they have a real shortage of test kits available. Unlike South Korea, where there appears to be no prohibition on testing. *shakes fist at CDC*
