Washington high school closed over coronavirus concerns after staff member's relative is tested for virus

A high school in Washington State canceled classes and was closed on Thursday after a staff member reported that a family member who had traveled with them internationally became sick and was being quarantined and tested for the novel coronavirus. In a letter sent to Bothell High School families, Superintendent Michelle Reid said that the staff member was also being quarantined at home for 14 days.

“At this time, there is no confirmation that the family member’s illness is connected to the coronavirus outbreak, but out of an abundance of caution, the family member is being tested,” the letter said. “Our initial understanding was that we would learn the test results in one day. However, during my conversation with the Washington State Department of Health Epidemiologist Scott Lindquist M.D., and representatives of Public Health Seattle & King County, I was told that the test results may take 5-7 days.”

I'm in the same boat as you as far as my asthma and lung complications. I have a handful of N95 masks, but really very few. I have not been able to find any in stores at this point. I won't be staying home 100% of the time. I'm a health care worker and will need to go to work. Other than that, I'm going to limit my exposure to public places.

Can you take a pic and share of the label on the masks you use for work?

I’ve seriously decided to turn my basement into an inside track while we get through this. If you can’t do this, take walks around your yard, down the block, etc; I really wish I had a Peloton! Yoga phone apps work too. MOO

I like to dance and have several CDs that I play and just dance around the house :) Soundtracks for Dirty Dancing, Mamma Mia!, Saturday Night Fever, Beautiful (The Carole King Musical), and a 5-disk Motown Collection are perfect for improvising. No equipment needed other than a CD player. Dance like nobody's watching :D

Virus contributing factor in Montrose woman's death

A Montrose (Colorado) woman says her sister died, in part, because of a strain of the coronavirus, not confirmed to be COVID-19. In fact, it's listed as one of the causes of death on her death certificate.

It started when Lola Short went to the hospital for flu-like symptoms back in January. She had been on a flight from Grand Junction to Las Vegas, and also spent some time in Arizona. Within a week, things escalated fast.

"That Monday she was ventilated, Tuesday she wasn't improving so they put her on Flight For Life to St. Joseph's in Denver," her sister said.

Lola eventually needed ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a treatment to help run her heart and lungs. But that procedure was ultimately the cause of her death. It's listed first on the certificate.

Along with the ECMO, the death certificate listed sepsis, pnemonia, influenza and coronavirus as causes of death.

CSPAN on Twitter

.@SpeakerPelosi: "I spoke with the Vice President this morning, made some of these concerns known to him. We have always had a very candid relationship and I expressed to him the concern that I had of his being in this position." #coronavirus

Doctors Inside Iran Believe Coronavirus Is More Serious Than Reported, and Getting Worse

“We think that this virus has been in Iran for the past three to four weeks and has circulated throughout the country. Right now in Iran we are facing a coronavirus epidemic,” said a senior medical doctor at the Masih Daneshvari hospital in Tehran, the country’s top pulmonary public hospital and the main facility overseeing coronavirus patients.

“In the past couple of weeks there were quite a few patients, mainly elderly, with suspicious symptoms who would test negative for influenza, some of whom have died,” said the doctor at Masih Daneshvari hospital. “Naturally we thought it might be corona, but had no testing kit to properly test for [it].” He added that the first testing kits did not come to Iran until last Wednesday. “The kits were not available for sale to us earlier and we bought the first batch from Germany as soon as they were available.”

Medicines too are in short supply. The doctor in Masih Daneshvari hospital said the scarcity of U.S. dollars limits purchasing power. Right now he is in dire need of the antiviral medicine Remdesivir, he adds. But despite all the limitations, he says he is doing what he can to fight the coronavirus. “We are the frontline. We need to accept that we have so many shortcomings; but we, the medical professionals, are fighting this war with all of our power. I come to this hospital for the people in need and am willing to give my life.”

First-world problem:

If they shut down the community swimming pool and weight / treadmill room and I am at home quarantined with tons of carbs and no fresh veggies......

I guess I should have just bought the Peleton, anyway.

( Have you seen that new one, “The Mirror”—that looks really cool. And since it hangs on the wall like a mirror it can’t become a clothes rack)

I’m glad we’re getting our exercise plans figured out.

Oh ugh. Yes, you are right. But I'd rather have a treadmill or a Peleton now. *pouts*
I bought a Hydrow for myself for Christmas, nearest decent gym was 30 minutes away and it wasn’t going to happen. I love it, use it every other day or more if I’ve had a stressful day. Journey workouts are my stress reliever. Rowed Loch Ness the other day.

I know, right?

I'm like a squirrel on crack if I think there is one chocolate bar from 6 months ago still left in the back of the cupboard
Luckily I function on the "out-of-sight/out-of-mind" program. Imagine my delight when I discover a goody that I didn't remember was there.

*Once I even found $200 in the pocket of a pair of jeans I hadn't worn for a while.

I hope CDC and WHO are all over this case.

Governor: Coronavirus changing 'by the hour' in California

Well that's a depressing article.... so many tidbits in this it's hard to summarize. Here are some highlights:

* "in a state that has more people in quarantine than any other, many questions remain unanswered. Plans on where to house infected patients are not clear, local governments are declaring emergencies and at least one lawmaker said he's getting "radio silence" from the governor's administration."

* Governor Newsom's updated number differs from that currently being reported by the state's public health department

* In the letter Ghaly and Ghilarducci said they are committed to finding a location to place California residents, but want the federal government to come up with a plan for non-California residents.

* "...we do have significant concerns that there is no alternative plan from the federal government," the California letter said. "We request that your team immediately provide us with information relative to any alternative plans for non-California residents. As more individuals test positive at Travis Air Force Base, the urgency to have alternative plans implemented grows," the letter says.

* Senator Moorlach said that last Thursday he got a call notifying him that 16 patients would be transferred to the Costa Mesa facility. "And after that, it's been radio silence," Moorlach told CalMatters. "We're not trying to be obstructionists, we're looking for answers," he said.

Sounds like no one is on the same page and the hand is not talking to the foot.... Yikes.

MOO.
