Israeli scientists: 'In a few weeks, we will have coronavirus vaccine'

Israeli scientists are on the cusp of developing the first vaccine against the novel coronavirus, according to Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis. If all goes as planned, the vaccine could be ready within three weeks and available in 90 days.
I find this disturbing.

It is dangerous and irresponsible to promise a rapid vaccine that has not been fully validated in human subjects.

AND

Just because Israel releases a vaccine does not mean the FDA will approve it for use in the USA

Unless there is relentless ( and possibly inappropriate) expidition of approval because of politics. I fear this is a real possibility

My random thoughts... People at religious services are often shoulder-to-shoulder, breathing on each other, hands on pews, prayer books, hymnals, dipping fingers into holy water, drinking from chalice, taking communion, shaking hands......oh I shudder!!!!

How about the folks currently working or walking around with what they think is cold or flu. They recover and don't get tested yet pass it on, but it is actually COVID-19.

Just had to vent!!!!

Key question for coronavirus response: What's kids' role in spreading it?

'Though the evidence to date suggests this virus doesn't inflict severe disease on children, there's reason to think kids may be helping to amplify transmission. It's a role they play to devastating effect during flu season,
becoming ill and passing flu viruses on to their parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers."

Been trying to keep up but life getting in the way. LOL

Wanted to share a tip about the light blue color type of rubber disposable gloves that I love as compared to the normal white ones that leave a powdery residue on your hands.

I find these light blue colored ones go on super easy and they dont rip or tear like the white ones do when I try to put them on.

The kind I got are called "Equate (brand) Nitrile Examination gloves. I really like these kind and I shared about a week ago that I mainly like to use them when grocery shopping because I dont trust the handles of the shopping cart for any germs. Especially since there is a fold down child seat in the area near the front and I gross myself out thinking about dirty bottoms of young children sitting there in that spot and knawing on the handle like a pacifier. LOL

Below is a link with similar Nitrile blue colored gloves.

"The rapid spread of the novel coronavirus raised the specter of a global pandemic as governments ramped up their emergency responses and financial markets slumped again Thursday, despite signs that the outbreak may be easing in China.

U.S. markets fell sharply Thursday, after the first coronavirus case in the United States that could not be linked to foreign travel was confirmed. The state of California is calling the case, first reported by The Washington Post, its first instance of community transmission. The hospital is monitoring the health of scores of staff members who may have come in contact with the patient.

Japan told schools to close through the spring break, which for most students typically means early April. Australia’s leader warned that a pandemic was inevitable, and an Iranian lawmaker said he has tested positive for the virus. New infections and deaths from covid-19, as the disease caused by the coronavirus is known, emerged from the Middle East to Europe and South Korea. The State Department, meanwhile, issued a Level 3 travel advisory for South Korea, portending extended economic disruption in Asia."

I can’t get past the paywall. Is there more there that we should be aware of?

Dozens of staffers at Calif. hospital that treated coronavirus patient with no travel to affected countries are being monitored

The patient is a Solano County woman who brought herself to NorthBay VacaValley Hospital, a 50-bed community hospital in Vacaville, Calif., with flu-like symptoms on Feb. 15, according to a person briefed on the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Staff there questioned her about travel and contacts under CDC guidelines, but she did not meet the criteria for someone who should be tested for the virus, the person said.

The hospital is monitoring the health of scores of staff members who may have come in contact with her, the person said. Most are tracking their own health, but staff who had direct contact with the woman have been tested for the virus. So far, there have been no positive tests among them, the person said.

Staff at NorthBay inserted a tube in the woman’s lungs to help her breathe, a procedure experts say increases risk of exposure to the virus because it can aerosolize respiratory droplets.

When the woman’s health continued to decline, she was transferred to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, which has more capacity and expertise with pulmonary patients, the person briefed on the matter said. UC Davis officials said she arrived there on Feb. 19.

Two UC Davis officials sent an email to employees Wednesday that said the patient arrived at the medical center Feb. 19 but was not tested until Sunday because they did not meet the criteria for testing. That includes recent travel to China or close contact with a confirmed case.

“When the patient arrived, the patient had already been intubated, was on a ventilator, and given droplet protection orders because of an undiagnosed and suspected viral condition,” they wrote. “Since the patient arrived with a suspected viral infection, our care teams have been taking the proper infection prevention (contact droplet) precautions during the patient’s stay.”

UC Davis asked the CDC to conduct a test for the virus because local and state labs were not doing so. “Since the patient did not fit the existing CDC criteria for covid-19, a test was not immediately administered. UC Davis Health does not control the testing process,” they wrote.

The CDC ordered a test Sunday and additional precautions were taken, they wrote. The agency confirmed the positive test Wednesday.

Kris Concepcion, fire chief and acting public information officer in Vacaville, Calif., said county officials had issued a directive not to transport any new patients to two local hospitals — NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville and NorthBay Medical Center in nearby Fairfield. Concepcion declined to say why those orders had been given.

Vacaville City Manager Jeremy Craig said he was told by the Solano County Public Health Department not to send patients to NorthBay VacaValley hospital Wedneday but was not given any reason. The city is anxious to know whether there is a coronavirus case in the community.

Erin Hannigan, chairwoman of the Solano County Board of Supervisors, indicated that the CDC was handling the situation. Asked whether the local government was taking any steps in response to the reported case, she said, “It’s one person, so we have to keep it in perspective” and then hung up.

To clarify I am only avoiding exercise classes due to the normal viruses we see. After my horrid bout of pneumonia I'm avoiding anything at this point. Once spring comes and usual viruses settle down back I go. I'm not avoiding due to this virus. Yet when I am in a public place and especially out of town I am much more diligent with usual practices. No outbreaks in my city thus far but certainly near me.

Pence taps career health official to coordinate White House coronavirus response
Pence taps career health official to coordinate White House coronavirus response
BY BRETT SAMUELS - 02/27/20 11:37 AM EST 2,882

Vice President Pence on Thursday tapped longtime health official and ambassador-at-large Debbie Birx to serve as the White House coronavirus response coordinator.

Birx has worked for decades in the medical field, largely focusing on combating and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS. The staffing move is likely intended to appease calls from many lawmakers for the Trump administration to appoint a "czar" to oversee the federal response to the coronavirus.

"She has deep experience in coordinating across agencies," Pence's office said in announcing Birx's new role. "She has worked from the research bench to the clinic, but understands the primary focus must always be to reach the individuals most in need. She will bring her infectious disease, immunologic, vaccine research and interagency coordinating capacity to this position."

Yes. Post-pnemonia it's well advised.
Sometimes it takes a long time to feel 100% again.
Post pnemonia, got to take good care of the machine, your body.
