Stock markets are always jittery. Just in my opinion, there's more houses of cards in the stock market then in Las Vegas.
There is no doubt that any and all companies that rely on travel of any kind are going to take a huge hit.
This will certainly trickle down to ALL that depend on tourism. Which is more vast than we can imagine. Down to the people in Mexico that sell tamales on the side of the road going from Cancun.
Just my opinion...

Congratulations on your cancer survival!!!

To answer your post, I wouldn’t call what you are seeing on this thread as panic, but more as active planning and brainstorming. I’m certainly not panicking...I think that’s a waste of emotional energy that could be put to better use being prepared. I consider myself an optimist, and I think it’s easier to be optimistic when you have taken reasonable precautions. My husband and I have had emergency “Go-bags” and “shelter in place” supplies gathered for some years. We live in earthquake and wildfire country near a major interstate, so preparation seems prudent. Rather than raid our go-bags, I will inventory our supplies in the basement and see if I need to add anything in case we need to isolate ourselves. I know I need to restock cough medicine, canned and dry food, wipes and hand sanitizer for general use, etc. so I’ll do that and be good to go (or stay :)).

I think the market tanking is due to stockholders selling in a panic, which I think is really stupid personally (and we do own...and are not selling...stocks). If anything, I would hazard a guess that lack of confidence in the way the government is handling this is contributing to panicky selling. As far as possible economic downturn, that will be a domino effect trickling down to smaller businesses IMO. Large companies such as Google and Amazon are taking prudent precautions and this will impact lots of other businesses, but no one wants to be blamed for exposing people to COVID-19. Rock meet hard place.

Anyone seeing shortages of items such as rubbing alcohol, aspirin, bleach, etc?
Went to Target and Walmart - shelves were bare of these items plus other things on the regular shopping list.
Not panic buying, just things that we use on a regular basis.

You have misunderstood my post, of course the poor haven't anything to do with economy and the stock market. Perhaps I should have started a new paragraph with the market or economic downturn to make it clearer to you. My apologies.

My post was trying to write that the obvious panic that people are spreading, have also shown panic to the people that have limited resources. I've read on this forum that people have spent money because of panic buying. IMO there is a desperation to buy masks, and they can't buy them. Or they need to buy up hand sanitizer, but the supply is gone. AACK! Shudder. Not kidding you, I've read these words on this forum.

Obviously we all read and interpret what we see, most times different than the next person. But I just want to point out that the sky is not falling IMO and people need to be aware that the spread of doom and gloom with nothing about a little hope, is the worst way to cause panic. Panic leads to chaos, chaos leads to sadness. I am only trying to say there is another way to look at this health emergency. Trust your community leaders, not gossip mongers.

Just MOO.
I haven’t bought anything I didn’t already have some of and that I won’t use in the future. That’s not panic-buying, It’s good planning, which I see from most of our posters.

Oregon case...gender and age not revealed. Working to find out who person has spent time with. Spent time in a Clackamas county elementary school. Not good!

Answering questions: Now saying Forest Hill elementary school in Clackamas county. Calling this case presumptive until get test back from CDC but treating it as a confirmed case. At first sign of cold or flu stay home. Governor says they are taking this very very seriously and to remain calm but take usual precautions. Learned about this case at about 3:00 pm today. Early in investigation. Person did not travel to any place of concern. Contacts will be asked to watch for symptoms. Case count may tick up. CDC is now testing people who didn’t travel who have symptoms. Two people prior to this had symptoms but test came back negative. Kaiser Hospital is working to protect workers. Doing detailed timeline of where person has been and had contact with. Have pending results for another person with symptoms. Looking at people who had close contact...sitting close, having conversations, not casual like in a store. Will be as transparent as possible about positive cases. Says agrees with CDC that there will be widespread incidents. This is between TB and measles for being spread. Governor is confident in professionals and systems in place in the state.

Rachel Maddow just mentioned this case!

I'm sorry. :( I wonder how that will change things for people in your county and city or do you think life will still go on as normal? I honestly don't know what I'd do personally.

Oh, crap! I see you've been in and out of where they work. Wow!

I'm listening to the press conference in Oregon and officials are suggesting people to stock up. Not in a crazy way, but as a reminder to be prepared - like we should do anyway in case the family falls sick or there is bad weather and you're stuck home for days on end.

Reasonable and responsible words from what appears to be a calm official not in a panic.

Not here in Southwest New Mexico (@cody22 next door neighbor). However clerks at Walmart where I shopped today informed me that today's shopping was "Huge".
