Ok, guys, I’ve been trying to keep up. I’m seriously worried about my SIL and nephew going on a cruise with stops in Mexico now. It’s better than Asia, but any cruise freaks me out right now.

I found this article, which states the mortality rate for flu is .1% and COVID-19 is 2.3%. Does this seem in line with what you all are finding? I want to discourage her from going. Thinking about sending this article to her.

Trump official says coronavirus death rate same as flu – despite it being 100 times bigger

I believe that’s currently the most widely accepted mortality rate. But you’ll find estimated numbers all over the board if you look at the assumptions coming from a lot of different sources.

Update from my family member who is a virtual teacher in the US for VIPKids program in China (teaches Chinese children virtually). My family member says " overwhelmed with requests for online classes as they are not allowed to leave their apartments" (e.d. not referred to as homes, as almost all live in apartments). Family member has much information, WeChats and videos that have never been released to MSM about families there (e.g. one of her students' family member was just released from hospital after infection, he was in the hospital for 24 days. )

Is anyone here good at starting polls on the "Polls" forum elsewhere on this site? The public is welcome to participate which could draw more people to Websleuths if they're interested in discussing COVID-19. I've done a couple of polls but only with the help of a staff member, and I don't want to impose on our already-busy moderators. The questionnaire could include worst fears about the virus, satisfaction with national response, what local communities and individuals are doing to prepare, etc. I'd be happy to work on the questionnaire if someone could help with actually posting the poll.

Where does the cruise originate? Many folks from outside the U.S. travel to warmer climates during the winter months.

NCAA Preparing for Coronavirus Impact on March Madness

"NCAA staff continues to prepare for March Madness but we are keenly aware of coronavirus and will continue to monitor in coordination with state/local health authorities and the CDC," NCAA associate director of communications Chris Radford told USA Today, which was the first to report that the NCAA's Sports Science Institute issued a pair of memos to its members related to the virus.

The memos directed readers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for resources as they prepare for the upcoming basketball tournaments, which start March 17.
Oh boy. I forgot about March Madness basketball. I’ve been hearing about the Olympics. What a tricky business this is turning out to be. . .

Dow falls another 750 points at the open over coronavirus fears

US stocks tumbled once again on Friday, as coronavirus fears continue to mount.

Equities are on track for their worst week since the financial crisis.

The Dow opened 750 points, or 2.9% lower on Friday — its seventh-straight day in the red. The broader S&P 500 opened down 2.8%. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.9%.

The Dow dropped 3,226 points in the first four days of the week, including its worst one-day point drop in history on Thursday.

All three major indexes are on track for their worst week since October 2008.

Sorry if this has already been posted as I havent been able to check recent posts yet. I found this news about cancelling this major Car Show. This car show is important to a lot of automobile manufacturers as it gives them a chance to display their new prototypes and some really cool "concept cars".

They totally cancelled it until next year. :(

Mexico reports first cases of virus

Mexico announced that the country now has two confirmed cases of the new coronavirus. One of the patients is in Mexico City and the other in the northern state of Sinaloa, and neither is seriously ill.

At least five family contacts of the first patient have been placed in isolation. He said one of the men had contact with someone who had traveled to the northern Italian region where there has been an outbreak.

Coronavirus in more than 50 countries, including 1st in sub-Saharan Africa

During the winter months, a lot of our fresh produce comes from Mexico. I always check the origin of fruits and veggies even though our international marketplace posts signs about their food safety when there has been a recall, i.e. contaminated Romaine, bag salads, etc. We've enjoyed some wonderful fresh asparagus from Mexico over that past several weeks, and I hope we can continue to have it without worrying about Coronavirus.

Yes, it is worse than the flu: busting the coronavirus myths
''Claim: ‘It is no more dangerous than winter flu’

Many individuals who get coronavirus will experience nothing worse than seasonal flu symptoms, but the overall profile of the disease, including its mortality rate, looks more serious. At the start of an outbreak the apparent mortality rate can be an overestimate if a lot of mild cases are being missed. But this week, a WHO expert suggested that this has not been the case with Covid-19. Bruce Aylward, who led an international mission to China to learn about the virus and the country’s response, said the evidence did not suggest that we were only seeing the tip of the iceberg. If borne out by further testing, this could mean that current estimates of a roughly 1% fatality rate are accurate. This would make Covid-19 about 10 times more deadly than seasonal flu, which is estimated to kill between 290,000 and 650,000 people a year globally.

Claim: ‘It only kills the elderly, so younger people can relax’
Most people who are not elderly and do not have underlying health conditions will not become critically ill from Covid-19. But the illness still has a higher chance of leading to serious respiratory symptoms than seasonal flu and there are other at-risk groups – health workers, for instance, are more vulnerable because they are likely to have higher exposure to the virus. The actions that young, healthy people take, including reporting symptoms and following quarantine instructions, will have an important role in protecting the most vulnerable in society and in shaping the overall trajectory of the outbreak.

Claim: ‘Face masks don’t work’
Wearing a face mask is not an iron clad guarantee that you won’t get sick – viruses can also transmit through the eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols, can still penetrate masks. However, masks are effective at capturing droplets, which is the main transmission route of coronavirus, and some studies have estimated a roughly five-fold protection versus no barrier. If you are likely to be in close contact with someone infected, a mask cuts the chance of the disease being passed on. If you’re just walking around town and not in close contact with others, wearing a mask is unlikely to make any difference.''

So, basically it MAY be EVER SO SLIGHTLY more serious than the flu. But sure, let's get some global hysteria going and crash the economy. I'm starting to become rather annoyed

Great idea to have multiple questions along with multiple choice options for answers.

I tried once to set one up and I found I did not have the right privileges to start my own Poll so I do think a MOD has to help setup the Poll on the Poll Thread. You probably already know this that there is a special thread that has the polls and then we can link to it from here to tell everyone where the Poll is, and we can eventually include the Poll link on Page 1 .

20 vaccines on trial per WHO (keep in mind that US said they would be later than others to get to market due to regulatory requirement, same thing CDC told in Senate meeting yesterday about the test kit not used when SK had done so many... they said regulatory different in US) MOO

Well, it really depends what happens. With luck all the efforts will pay off and it won't be as bad as flu for cases or deaths, at least in this season.

The problem is that if it took off and got as big as flu in gross numbers of cases, then it would be far worse than flu as far as deaths and stress on the healthcare systems in countries around the world. So they're trying to take a lot of precautions with it.

The markets were not going to like things like parts and goods being held up in China, the airlines having problems, and other problems too that have already happened/are happening now. If it doesn't get any worse then the markets will adjust upwards. And of course that's what we all hope for.

Wow. 20 different vaccines going to trial phases. That is good news. Surely 1 or 2 of them or more will end up being successful as a vaccine.

Ive been impressed with how quickly the scientists are trying to get a vaccine. Once we have a vaccine, then it will help tremendously.

Good morning,

Very behind as usual but wow, had missed Mexico:

Coronavirus: First 2 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Mexico, official says

Updated an hour ago
“MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's assistant health secretary announced Friday that the country now has two confirmed cases of the new coronavirus.

Hugo Lopez-Gatell said one of the patients is in Mexico City and the other in the northern state of Sinaloa. While a second test is still pending on that case, he said, "We are treating this as confirmed." Neither is seriously ill.”
