Two questions:
a. What kind alcohol for hand sanitizer? 60% proof of just something I can pick up at the liquor store?

b. How are we supposed to be cleaning our washing machines?

I wanted to bring this post forward for anyone who missed it since it was at the very end of the last thread. I thought the footage was uh, “wild”, for lack of a better term:

Coronavirus COVID-19 *Global Health Emergency* #7

That tiny net seems ridiculously ineffective. lol I mean if you are going to threaten to catch people with nets I'd think using one that barely fits around the head seems not terribly threatening. My kids have better nets laying around the house to catch people with.

so I looked up hand sanitizers online and there is none left to order.

When I looked on Amazon this morning I saw none either. There are none listed on our Walmart website. But my husband just picked up some bottles in the store. But you can apparently make your own with aloe vera gel and alcohol.

This has probably been posted already, I'm so behind. But it's so awful and it's on the BBC, not the Express or Star...

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Office has been in communication with local authorities about their "mass death preparedness" - what their plans are to deal with pressures on public services if deaths from coronavirus are severe, BBC Newsnight understands.

This includes, among other things, where local authorities might locate new, and perhaps mass, burial sites, should they be needed.

Two more coronavirus cases confirmed in England

And......thee goes France.....France was the first country in Europe to confirm cases of coronavirus on January 24th - although French authorities say this is simply because of their rapid testing. A month later there are clusters. I hold with my prediction of clusters in Northern CA in the first 2 weeks of March.

60% would be 120 proof, would have to be strong stuff, maybe some Bacardi 151? Not sure if pharmacies sell denatured ethyl alcohol, might be worth checking.

running machine empty with some bleach is what I read, probably on hot. Mine has Tub Clean cycle that uses steam.

Unless it’s a front loader, then there’s more (often gross) stuff to do.

Google your type. Also, vinegar and baking soda is better than bleach because it actually breaks up the crud in the machine.

FTR we called our local Sherwin Williams paint stores. There are 3 in our town. But they said they weren't getting a shipment after all and their warehouse was out of stock. :/

So what would you do? You need to go to a hospital for lab work but you have no masks? Just not worry about it and hope for the best? I mean I can wash my hands and do my best to touch nothing. I already open door handles with the sleeve of my coat. But I still have to deal directly with a nurse drawing blood and sitting in a chair that potentially sick people have sat in all day.

I won't die if I don't get lab work soon. But I will have no way to accurately test what's going on with my illness and less ability to dose medication. And it's probably less chance of catching something now vs later, right?

I think these guys ship to residential customers. They still have hand sanitizer in stock. Shipping can be a little crazy but I’m not sure what prices are elsewhere.

Malaria has relapses. My father had malaria from travels in the Congo and had relapses later in life. There are now medications for this, but not when he had it.

"In P. vivax and P. ovale infections, patients having recovered from the first episode of illness may suffer several additional attacks (“relapses”) after months or even years without symptoms. Relapses occur because P. vivax and P. ovale have dormant liver stage parasites (“hypnozoites”) that may reactivate."

CDC - Malaria - About Malaria - Disease

Thanks for this information.

(Gosh, I’m recalling THE absolute worst tasting, most intolerable and horrible thing I’ve EVER tasted in my life...“Malaria Profylaxis”. I’ve taken it before traveling overseas and OMG...you have to start dosing weeks/days before your travels iirc. Words can not even come close to describing how potent it is taste-wise or how bad it tastes. You can barely get or keep it down, it is soooooo bitter.)

Local medical supply stores will sell you face masks if you get a DRs note. I did it that way to get some masks for my college kid who has Asthma. Attack free for several years but I wasn't going to take a chance.

Wash your hands after handling it.

jmo

This is something I've been thinking, that surely there are some things where it's just better to wash your hands after touching/handling them instead of trying to clean the things, and money is the one I'm thinking of? I don't know if there might be anything else that could come into that category?

It makes sense in the China example where the banks were taking notes back for sterlisation, but for individuals I just wonder if the hand washing/hand sanitizer use isn't more practical?

I really don't understand what your issue is? Mine is not a political comment at all. In fact, I was trying to alleviate the political part of it.

I would be (and am) concerned about anyone who is coordinating information we all need to "not die." And it is relevant if information is not being coordinated state wise and nationally. When someone (anyone) has been put in charge of a task such as this, I hope he/she is the most qualified to do so. That's all I'm saying and I'm sorry if I pushed your patience.

I’m with you on this @zecats. I do not agree that it’s “political” to express concerns about the background and qualifications of the person in charge AND the fact that all communication from scientists about COVID-19 has to come through that one person. This is a concern that anyone in any country should have. And you’d better believe I’m concerned.

That doesn’t mean that we should get into political arguments on this thread, but I think we can leave it up to the mods to intervene if we cross a line, since we are not supposed to tell each other how to post. It’s really a matter of alerting others that they need to take responsibility for gathering and evaluating information themselves, rather than just relying on the government (any government) for valid information. This thread is an invaluable resource for doing just that.
IMO JMO MOO

I haven’t watched this yet but just want to say again that sorry but anyone who chooses to cruise right now (or travel to affected areas) needs to reallly think about the potential consequences which could include facing quarantine and/or hospitalization in a foreign country, lack of being repatriated in a timely manner, etc etc. If I comment further it will sound harsh so shutting my mouth before I say something offensive.
