The coronavirus outbreak means Australia will have 1.8 million fewer international visitors in the first six months of this year compared to last year, a group representing tourism and transport companies says.

The Tourism and Transport Forum estimates the number of foreign travellers visiting the country between January and June 2020 will be down 40 per cent on the same period in 2019.

The TTF suggested there would be an average monthly loss in total tourism receipts of $2 billion beyond March.

I will be that person who gets it and shows no symptoms and just gives it to everyone else. I don’t see how only more susceptible people staying in would help. Us healthy folks are just going to bring it to them. MOO

Minimizing contact will reduce risk.

I think that's the reason that the statistics in China are improving.

Rsbm / BBM:
Last week, at work, it was "business as usual".

This week, we were issued gloves, hand sanitizer, face masks. The website is updated daily. And procedures that are normally inflexible, all of the sudden, umm, yeah, well, if you are sick, we can totally reschedule your appointment. (Hello, where I work, it usually takes an act of God to reschedule an appointment!).

Following....to stay informed, though it is somewhat anxiety producing.

Solana Beach, Northern CA.....
A friend was in a supermarket yesterday in Solana Beach, where he saw a military guy wearing a mask, and who he overheard saying he was just back from S. Korea and they (other personnel as well) were asked to wear masks for 2 weeks. The recent case is in that area. Why aren’t they quarantined? By whom were they told to wear masks for 2 weeks, when they are not effective. The guy was wearing a down jacket in 72 degree weather. Was he having chills, a temp? And now Gavin Newsom has put an alert of Solana County. My friend has now self isolated himself.....in case.

eta.. SOLANO county area, not Solana, ty for the correction

Australians have been told to put away the face masks and instead wash their hands more regularly, as state and federal health authorities roll out an emergency coronavirus plan.

As part of the plan, the federal government will shore up the supply of medicines and other necessities, as well as work on preparations for any major outbreak with aged care providers, GPs and specialists.

The states and territories will lead the work in relation to hospitals and respiratory clinics.

Online grocer FreshDirect sees surge in orders, experiences delays

FreshDirect is seeing an increase in orders that the company thinks could be driven by coronavirus. The New York-based online grocer said that it is experiencing delays with deliveries because of the high volume. “We have experienced growth across the board, particularly in high-trust categories including fresh seafood, fresh chicken, baby food, baby and family health products as well as household cleaning and disinfectant items. Anecdotally, we believe the increase in demand may be related to COVID-19 (coronavirus) media reports and preparedness and as a result, customers are opting for online grocery shopping.”

I don't care. I'm going to use a face mask in crowded areas anyhow. It could stop some of whatever people are coughing into the air. And for God's sake maybe this will help stop sick people from going all over the place or it may stop people from letting their sick kids run around hacking all over the place.

I was sitting at a restaurant last year waiting for a to go order. Kid runs by me coughing. 3 days later - BAM. A "mild" cold. Became a respiratory nightmare that had me out of work for two weeks.

Solana Beach is in San Diego county in southern CA...nowhere near Solano county. (Googling Solano Beach...ending in “o”...only found the one ending in “a” in SD county.) I’m not minimizing your concern, but just correcting the location. As far as I know, there are no cases in San Diego county...yet.

Here are some other options. (BTW Hand sanitizers are also known to kill good bacteria.) (And my dad's microbiologist SO insists on only using soap and water.)

I personally support hydrogen peroxide as I use it on cat scratches. And our yoga class teacher uses tea tree oil. These are just some suggestions for those who can't find the other stuff anywhere, or who prefer more organic options. BTW I'm not claiming to have any knowledge of how any sanitizer works with CV, but I sure do keep searching. JMO

AGREE. AGREE. AGREE

Just like brushing your teeth, you get better results with a longer procedure. That's why the Sonicare does such a great job- the timer is set at 3 minutes which is about 6X the time most people do manual toothbrushing.

So back to handwashing:

Yes, use soap and warm-hot water. Sing Happy Birthday ( ! 20 sec) or better yet, watch a clock for 1 minute. Interlock your fingers while soapy to get the soap between your fingers. I also use a soft scrubrush. I got some cheap, very colorful ones on Amazon that are great and I think would be fun for kids to use. And at least once a day get those soft bristles under your nails. You have lots of nasty stuff under your nails.

You don't need to sterilize your hands, just wash and lightly scrub off whatever is accumulating.

And you'll likely want to use moisturizer at night on your hands to prevent cracks from winter's dry indoor heat.

Ladies, if you have artificial nails, get rid of them. They are horrible for harboring pathogens. That's why RN's and surgeons are not allowed to wear them in surgery.

OFF TOPIC

I’m not sure if you mean you use hydrogen peroxide on yourself or your cat @zecats. In case it’s on your cats, I just learned it shouldn’t be used on cats or dogs. My DH used hydrogen peroxide for years on our kitties’ wounds. Our neutered boys were very protective of their territory! He prevented many visits to vets for abscesses, and they healed up nicely. But this info says it can be harmful. Hmmmmm....

What did they expect? They know about the virus, they know about other ships/cruises that were denied entry or quarantined, and yet they went on a cruise. When there were issues regarding ports, all they care about is their rights with no consideration for people who live at the ports.

The cruises should be cancelled until they can guarantee that the itinerary will be followed.

Hey thanks @Lilibet. I only use it on myself (and hubby) if a cat inadvertently scratches one of us. It has successfully cleaned and prevented any potential infection for as long as I've used it. And, my cats are sweethearts, they don't scratch anyone purposefully. Sometimes my leg gets in the way :)
