Stop buying face masks?
US Surgeon General
They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!
Face masks: Surgeon general wants Americans to stop buying them over coronavirus fears - CNN

This doesn’t make sense. Either the masks are effective or they’re not. Why else would health care workers use them? They don’t have special genes that make the masks only work for them. This is ridiculous.

When I get my shipment in I’m wearing them.

This is an international crises and yes we do have press conferences about pandemics. Regardless of how likely it is for someone to get sick or die. The panic over ebola was insane here.

Well, Ebola has an overall 90% mortality rate, and as "low" as 66% in the US based on what I've seen (with no consideration of age or underlying health considerations to speak of afaik), so that even got MY attention! lol To me, this is no more of a serious "crisis" than the flu from the US's perspective, nor is it a true pandemnic if for no other reason than it's not associated with a high mortality rate. I think the President had to address it only because of the public panic and media attention. And, imo, the public panic is totally unwarranted and driven primarily by the media and possibly "other" considerations. jmo I'm not even slightly worried about it, and it doesn't appear to be having any impact on my local community. I was at the market and brunch today and didn't see any empty shelves, no face masks and no dearth of seniors enjoying their before-noon libations at the bar :)

UK sources are saying that they are up to 5 times more protective than no face mask in preventing transmission through the mouth and nose. I don't appreciate bull$hit and lies just because they didn't plan ahead to have masks for everyone in a pandemic.

I'd swear last month they suggested hand washing and masks and then suddenly only greedy morons would buy masks.

I think he means they can't get them for use treating OTHER diseases.

They are not just saying we shouldn't use them to spare them for others. They said on ABC news the other day they were potentially even WORSE than not wearing a mask because they would encourage someone to constantly touch their face. Just total lies...

They were wearing masks to protect them from other diseases before COVID-19 existed. They still need them for those even if the masks won't protect them from COVID-19. IMO.

It breaks my heart that they are finding the virus in a long term care facility.
I used to work at one.

As we’ve seen discussed several times on the threads, not all masks are created equal. Healthcare workers need to be fitted and you have to wear them properly. The majority of people on the street aren’t wearing them correctly, and if you are constantly touching the mask it’s worse.

My (non-medical) understanding is the masks are recommended for health-care workers because health-care workers are in constant close contact with sick people.

Most people in the general public are not face-to-face with sick people and can keep a healthy distance from others, while health-care workers are literally in a patient's face and other body parts. The masks give them protection. A regular person doesn't need that "in your face" protection and thus the mask doesn't do much for them.

A sick person needs a mask to prevent spreading germs when they cough, sneeze. The mask protects the people around a sick person.

For regular, healthy people who are not in constant contact with sick people, the masks are not recommended. I've also read that most people "breech" the safety of the masks anyway by touching face and eyes, not handling the mask properly, etc.

This is understanding from what I'm reading: healthy people don't need to wear a mask.

Nobody has to agree with my understanding, but please don't pounce on me if you don't agree. :) (And if you do pounce on me, for pete's sake, wash your hands first.)

Ebola is extremely deadly. Fortunately it's not infectious until individual starts showing symptoms.

I decided to brave my local Target for some supplies. Ugh. First thing in the door and some young man a couple yards ahead of me begins floridly coughing and output covering his mouth. A middle aged woman came walking toward me in an aisle, coughing without covering her mouth. I bolted from there but not before spelling at her.
I heard two other people and one child coughing in the store in aisles close to me. That made me wonder what I walking into whenever I rounded a corner.

This is making me paranoid. And super angry at selfish, unhygienic jerks who walk around coughing and sneezing without covering their mouths and noses or who take sick kids out and don’t teach them proper hygiene.
BBM
I almost literally thought you meant you cast a spell on her. I was going to ask you to teach me one. (Bet you wish you could - at least to cover up the coughers' and sneezers' faces. ;)

I think they don't want everybody to go buy masks. There are already shortages. If everybody and their mama starts buying masks, shortages will only get worse. As for being in contact with sick people-it's cold and flu season. Many people are coughing and sneezing. So if you are in public, chances are you are in contact with sick people.
