I decided to brave my local Target for some supplies. Ugh. First thing in the door and some young man a couple yards ahead of me begins floridly coughing and output covering his mouth. A middle aged woman came walking toward me in an aisle, coughing without covering her mouth. I bolted from there but not before spelling at her.
I heard two other people and one child coughing in the store in aisles close to me. That made me wonder what I walking into whenever I rounded a corner.

This is making me paranoid. And super angry at selfish, unhygienic jerks who walk around coughing and sneezing without covering their mouths and noses or who take sick kids out and don’t teach them proper hygiene.

Yes! I skittered out of the Dollar Store for the same reason.

Google the 'walmart near me'
and it shows peak hours graph.
I can do all my walmart shopping online, set a time for pickup, show up at the drive thru and they load it all, sign the ticket and go. No need to get out of the vehicle. It’s a free service and they don’t allow tips. Soooo easy. I think there may be a similar service at Target.

Ebola is extremely deadly. Fortunately it's not infectious until individual starts showing symptoms.

Yes but we only had four cases here and three others that were evacuated here from other countries. We already have 62 here. I mean it’s a big deal even if it’s only slightly more fatal than the flu. But at least there’s some vaccination protection from the flu. And this is apparently more contagious?

Why would the whole world be hysterical, including multiple health care providers if this wasn’t an important, international crises?

I feel you 100%.

I don't blame my inlaws, but we had our Christmas with them a few days after Christmas day. I am a HUGE believer that if you are having people over to your house, you inform them if anyone is sick. They did not. And, to be fair, if they would have told me, I still would have gone. I got the flu. Holy hell it was awful --it even got into my eyes, like pink eye. I spent at least 12 nights on the couch--NOT sleeping because any laying down made me choke with the gunk that was in me. I could go on, but I will just say that I was miserable.

Anyway.

My lesson from this is--PLEASE if you are sick --even with a cold. STAY HOME!

Gosh, that's a gooden if it got into your eyes like that.

Why would the masks protect from everything but this virus? Is it more aerospace than others? I don’t know how that’s possible.

This ^^ is regarding healthcare workers. The masks help health-care workers because of they spend literally hours and hours, day after day, in the faces (or elsewhere) of sick people. Health-care workers also know how to handle and wear the masks properly. The masks are helpful prevention to healthcare workers.

The masks are not particularly helpful for a healthy person in the general public, who can keep away from other people and who might not wear the mask properly or handle it properly and who may touch their eyes etc anyway. The masks might make a healthy person feel protected without actually offering protection.

If a sick person wears a mask, that is useful in preventing the sick person from coughing or sneezing and spreading germs.

Myopinion and I know it's unlikely to sway people who want to wear masks. (Get a cute one!)

I was at Bi-mart (a baby Costco for those who aren’t Oregonians) and it wasn’t more crowded than usual on a Saturday. Neither was the Dollar Store. I’m so sorry you have to self-isolate. When will your test results be available? Enjoy your binge watch!
Monday for final results.

I had the exact same thought. And the threat of sepsis "and even death" (daduhdum!!!) is from your IV -- which is from being in the hospital in the first place.

Are you saying that the threat of sepsis is from having an IV in place?

This doesn’t make sense. Either the masks are effective or they’re not. Why else would health care workers use them? They don’t have special genes that make the masks only work for them. This is ridiculous.

When I get my shipment in I’m wearing them.

Hello, I agree with you. If they are not effective, why are they making health care workers wear them. I read, and I can't remember where, that they are afraid of running out of masks. They know the number of masks available and estimate the number of health care workers needing them, and there is a shortage, so, in my opinion, they don't want us, the general public, wearing them. So, rather than say that, they are saying they don't work. MOO. Katt

And, P.S. - When mine come, I am also wearing them, as is my husband. Katt

I have no idea. It's possible when worn correctly by experienced professionals they do help protect from COVID-19?

BBM
I almost literally thought you meant you cast a spell on her. I was going to ask you to teach me one. (Bet you wish you could - at least to cover up the coughers' and sneezers' faces. ;)

Glaring!! I’m not sure how that came out as spelling!

Terrible as nursing home residents are already frail. :(

And the people who care for them are not highly paid. It would be even more of a disaster if they get sick or if they fail to show for work.

Lol, glutton for punishment indeed:

“When Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns to Minnesota from a Hong Kong business trip, she attributes the malaise she feels to jet lag. However, two days later, Beth is dead, and doctors tell her shocked husband (Matt Damon) that they have no idea what killed her. Soon, many others start to exhibit the same symptoms, and a global pandemic explodes. Doctors try to contain the lethal microbe, but society begins to collapse as a blogger (Jude Law) fans the flames of paranoia.”

“Contagion premiered at the 68th Venice Film Festival in Venice, Italy on September 3, 2011, and went on general release on September 9. The film was acclaimed by critics, who praised the narratives and the performances of various actors and actresses. It was also well received by scientists, who praised its accuracy. Commercially, the film was a box office success. Budgeted at $60 million, Contagion took $135 million in box office revenue during its theatrical run.”

I think it’s hyperbole to say the whole world is hysterical, many are not even paying any attention. Moo

My (non-medical) understanding is the masks are recommended for health-care workers because health-care workers are in constant close contact with sick people.

Most people in the general public are not face-to-face with sick people and can keep a healthy distance from others, while health-care workers are literally in a patient's face and other body parts. The masks give them protection. A regular person doesn't need that "in your face" protection and thus the mask doesn't do much for them.

A sick person needs a mask to prevent spreading germs when they cough, sneeze. The mask protects the people around a sick person.

For regular, healthy people who are not in constant contact with sick people, the masks are not recommended. I've also read that most people "breech" the safety of the masks anyway by touching face and eyes, not handling the mask properly, etc.

This is understanding from what I'm reading: healthy people don't need to wear a mask.

Nobody has to agree with my understanding, but please don't pounce on me if you don't agree. :) (And if you do pounce on me, for pete's sake, wash your hands first.)

I agree with you. ;)

Ha my brain must be auto correcting your auto correct. I read it as aerosol the first time. Had to go back and check.

Next they’ll be saying no need to buy hand sanitizer. MOO

I stocked up on tons of rubbing alcohol and mini spray bottles. (Travel size).

Frankly I’m usually pretty diligent about protecting against germs but I’m trying to be even more obsessive.
