DH just left for his regular Sunday swim and plans to go to Costco later today. I'm not a big fan of "big box" stores and rarely accompany him. I look forward to DH's report about shortages of food, cleaning products, health/beauty aids that might be noticeable while he's making his way around the store. There's nothing on our shortlist beyond a few of our usual Costco purchases: paper towels and toilet paper, deodorant, Palmolive dish liquid, mouth rinse, Clorox wipes, pasta sauce. Health/beauty aids and household necessities are purchased on a rotating basis when needed, and we rarely buy perishable food at Costco other than their fabulous Sockeye salmon.

DH continues to stockpile Primal Roots - our favorite red wine. He found four bottles at our local CVS :D No one knows if or when the lovely red blend will be available again in our area.

I don't seem to mount a fever response. I haven't had an actual fever since I was a child. I remember the last time I had strep as an early teen it never got over 99.? and I was actually sick enough to be hallucinating at the time. I got the flu a few years ago. Everyone in the house who got it got a fever. I still never got a fever. :/
I run about 1-1.5* low as my usual temp, so find myself wondering how it might manifest in me.

Also, a friend sent this article recently -- excellent article on the 1918 flu and some implications for today:

The Rhode Island Department of Health has announced the first presumptive positive case of coronavirus disease in Rhode Island.
The DOH said the person is in their 40s and traveled to Italy in mid-February. The person is being treated at an area hospital, according to the DOH.
Gov. Gina Raimondo and the director of health, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, will hold a news conference at 11:45 a.m. to answer any questions. The briefing will be carried live on NBC 10 and streamed on turnto10.com.

“The Rhode Island Department of Health has been preparing for weeks to ensure that we have a structure in place to, to the best of our ability, limit or prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Rhode Island. We fully anticipated having a first case of COVID-19,” said Alexander-Scott.

“We are not seeing widespread community transmission in Rhode Island, and the general level of risk for Rhode Islanders is still low," said Alexander-Scott. "However, everyone in Rhode Island has a role to play in helping us prevent the spread of viruses, just like the flu. It is very important that people wash their hands regularly, cover their coughs and sneezes, and stay home if they are sick.”

Health officials have begun reaching out to those who came in direct contact with the victim, making sure they undergo self-quarantine for 14 days with public health supervision.

The virus cannot be spread through the community as long as anyone exposed to the individual does not show symptoms outside of their home.

The DOH said the victim has not returned back to work since returning home from Italy and has had limited travel in Rhode Island.

Each presumptive positive test result must be confirmed by the CDC Laboratories, the DOH said.

RIDOH confirms first presumptive positive case of coronavirus in Rhode Island

From your link--

"The virus cannot be spread through the community as long as anyone exposed to the individual does not show symptoms outside of their home."

This quote and misinformation greatly concerns me when said by officials disseminating information. WTF, you are saying they have to be symptomatic to spread. This is sooooooooooooooooo inaccurate :banghead: from old emoticons.

That is why I really appreciated the presser yesterday in Washington state that was 100% accurate from what we at WS know.

So glad we are here at WS and are "in the know" from sharing info. What can individuals do when officials are disseminating incorrect info... I dunno. If I share with others (ha, no one where I am are concerned) they won't believe me if I say officials are wrong. I can only do here and folks will agree/understand.

Oh, what to do.

What a sad state of affairs

Chinese man sentenced to death for killing two officials at coronavirus checkpoint

From Chermaine Lee in Hong Kong

A Chinese man has been sentenced to death for killing two health officials at a coronavirus traffic check point in Yunnan province, according to a statement by the Yunnan provincial government.

The man drove a small van to the checkpoint and refused to follow instructions by the staff. Another passenger in the van got off and tried to remove a road block, despite warnings from staff members at the check point.

When one of the staffers started recording the incident as “evidence,” the driver of the van “felt dissatisfied” with the recording and started stabbing the staffer with a pocket knife in the chest and abdomen, according to the statement.

The man then moved on to stab the abdomen of another staff member at the checkpoint who came up to intervene. Both staff members died.

“Although the defendant (...) actively surrendered himself and truthfully confessed the facts of the crime, he used extremely cruel methods to kill two staff members of the epidemic prevention and control during the epidemic, and the consequences were extremely serious,” the statement said.
The statement added: “Therefore, the court decided not to impose a lenient sentence and gave the above verdict in accordance with the law."

The second passenger will be tried in a separate case, according to the statement.

ROLL and SCROLL if you don't like dark humor (we all need levity..but don't want to offend.)

If only WS cases moved so quickly as waiting for justice on soooo many cases here.

Yep “don’t touch your face..ever” This is a big one and all the old timer Hospital people say it. (and “just deal with it and build up the immunity” but I’ll pass on that myself lol)

It’s just a habit you don’t even realize, can avoid it once you are aware of it.

And I do have to say if youre not used to wearing a mask. You will be touching your face and or mask and maybe not removing it correctly etc etc Making the use of it probably less than ideal. Id check a few of the links about fit and use anyway (I think the 3m site has this )

Just spoke to someone I know who is a health-care professional about the virus. I consider hand washing the best prevention tip and he said, "Actually NOT touching your face is the best prevention. You're not going to get sick by germs on your hands. Your going to get sick when you touch your mouth, nose with germy hands."

PLEASE DON'T MISINTERPRET THAT. Yes, wash your hands! Washing your hands means when you do touch your face (and we all do), then you're touching with clean hands.

BUT ALSO, train yourself not to touch your face.

(And someone will point out this won't prevent every case - so I'll say in advance, yes, you're right.)

Keep hands away from face.

Bacteria can then live on the surface of lipstick, or inside the tube of lip gloss, which will eventually be spread onto your lips in the next application.

Coughing Pope Francis cancels participation at week-long spiritual retreat

A coughing Pope Francis told pilgrims gathered for the traditional Sunday blessing that he is canceling his participation at a week-long spiritual retreat in the Roman countryside because of a cold.

It is the first time in his seven-year papacy that he has missed the spiritual exercises that he initiated early in his pontificate to mark the start of each Lenten season.

SINGAPORE - Four new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Singapore, with three linked to the Wizlearn Technologies cluster, said the Ministry of Health on Sunday (March 1).

There are now 11 cases linked to the e-learning solutions company at Science Park II that emerged as a new coronavirus cluster last Friday.

Of the new cases, two are Singaporeans, one is a Myanmar national and the last one is a Japanese. The first three cases have no recent travel history to China, or to Daegu city and Cheongdo county in South Korea, while contact tracing is ongoing to determine if the Japanese patient has any links to the affected areas or previous cases.

Health Sec Alex Azar on @FaceTheNation now talking #COVID19. Says person who died was in hospital in Washington, do not know how he contracted virus yet. Contact tracing and investigation into how he got the virus ongoing.

Azar: There’s a nursing home that sends patients to this hospital and there are cases in that home. But who spread to whom we do not know yet. #COVID19

Azar: CDC has apologized for incorrectly briefing the president on gender of first patient who died #COVID19

Azar: We’ve already tested over 3600 people for the virus. Now have capability in the field to test 75k people. Next week or two radical expansion beyond that of testing available. #COVID19

Azar: Closing Southern border “not one of the highest priorities we’re looking at right now,” given relatively low number of cases currently in Mexico #COVID19

Azar: 20 drugs for which entire molecule or critical element is made exclusively in China. Working aggressively with manufacturers to determine if any shortages. 1 drug that has many, many alternatives in therapeutic class in shortage #COVID19
