I saw similar reports for Charleston and Savannah yesterday....

Port of Los Angeles is projecting a 25% drop in container volumes this month, as the economic impact of the coronavirus spreads across shipping operations and foreign supply chain. Imagine if 1 in 4 goods imported from Asia suddenly stopped coming. Impact just starting.

Coronavirus live updates: Rhode Island health officials confirm first case of virus in state

Seattle’s KIRO-TV found out Saturday evening that an area U.S. Postal Service employee tested positive for the coronavirus.

The employee who works at a Seattle network distribution center located in Federal Way, Washington.

The network distribution center is a mail processing plant that distributes USPS marketing mail and package services in piece and bulk form and does not handle letter mail. No mail is delivered from the facility.

I've been working with @reichlab and Evan Ray to look for early signs of COVID-19 in the US's influenza like illness data. We still don't find any strong signal.

Yep, it is not seen in the US's influenza illness database as they (surveillance centers in US) don't have the kits yet! MOO. Rolling them out this week, and by end of this coming week many should then have as a private company is now supplying/given approval to distribute. Too many for CDC to do, so they needed a private company to mfr, and was just given approval. CDC spoke to that at the hearing on Friday. MOO

Thread: #COVID19 #Coronavirus updates & data.
I will repeat this, but really important: cases coming out of the US WILL EXPLODE in the coming days. This is NOT a cause for panic. These EXISTING cases are finally being diagnosed, since testing is now more broadly available.

Agree, it's already here, it just hasn't been detected. The more testing we do, the better chance we have of keeping it from spreading too far.

I'd wager it's already in most states, pretty sure its in mine, though our pols keep telling us otherwise. Once it begins, they'll start telling us the concern is overblown and it's no different from any other flu.

For those that were asleep and missed the live feed 2 hours ago (wasn't that nice of him to do an Aussie time friendly feed)

I have really enjoyed watching his videos. OT: did anyone watch his broccoli soup video? I love how he pairs recipes with all the health benefits of the ingredients!

Even the old ones are up to speed on tablets. It’s a kick!

As Apple shut down mfg in China, and now Samsung (droid) in SK shut down mfg facilities yesterday... keep those old ones handy as may not have new models soon MOO

Egads. After watching the movie Contagion the other night due to BDE recommendation... that is one that I didn't think of as being a source.. until last night

Thanks for that order of symptoms - sounds like how the flu feels when you first notice symptoms. In my experience, the first things I notice with the flu are muscle aches and extreme fatigue. Sounds like that might be the case with this virus??
jmo

I think that's one of the key details to distinguish a bad cold from an influenza-type scenario. A cold will bring you down for a couple of days, but you don't generally have that bone-deep fatigue and all-over muscle aches that make it difficult to get out of bed.

Local Orlando news has been saying since Thurs. 5/27 that there's possibly 4, now 5,
cases pending confirmation. Not sure why the holdup of final confirmation. May need to be confirmed by CDC. Also 173 in Florida being closely monitored.
Coronavirus 'suspected' in 4 people in Florida

Good for them. I live in a large metro area, and hospitals are owned by private companies. How can they all get together to say... OK.. there are 20 in this area, and you guys... your 10 hospitals will ONLY be now for COVID-19 cases and no other (as China did). I cannot fathom how this would be done in the US. THIS is a biggie in my mind, and was actually dreaming/thinking about this just last night.

How will US hospitals come together to designate COVID-19 only for their patients.

I cannot see.....

Per presser in Rhode Island - My real time notes....

  • Is presumptive and must be confirmed by CDC -
  • Expedited case to test -Case is in 40's, recently returned on 22nd (e.d. did not say Feb, that is assumption) from a trip from Italy, France and Spain.
  • Contact tracing is in being done.
  • This person had limited travel, and DID NOT return to work after return.
  • Entire family has been self quarantining.
  • No one else in this home has symptoms, this is a critical factor (e.d. nope!!!)..
  • Those in contact with this individual has been asked to self - quarantine for 14 days. We will work with them and check with them several times a day.
  • If you are not feeling well, stay home - cough in arm or tissue - get flu shot to help decrease your need to go to hospital
  • Masks not recommended, reserve for health care workers or those that are working with ill pts. We need to preserve for health care providers
  • Generally as to going to ER. Going to such vs. doing at home or working with primary care provider... will extend time.. quicker and less expensive options. If you have come from area with COVID-19, call your health care provider, they can reach us directly. Home is the best place to be if you are not severe enough for hospitalization.
  • Same prevention for flu can prevent spread of COVID-19
Goes on to talking about hand washing etc etc.

ETA's to follow on this post as needed

  • We are not testing folks who do not have symptoms per CDC guidelines as they are not at risk of being infectious, you need to actually be exposed to someone who has symptoms ( :banghead: :banghead: :banghead )
IDIOTICALLY WRONG MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

ETA - Q&A's are about to happen, I may not be able to capture as RL.. sorry..can someone else do if interested?
