Kids remain one of the biggest mysteries of COVID-19: Why aren't more of them getting sick? Are they infected more by the other, common coronaviruses that build their immunity? Remarkable Age Distribution of OC43 vs. SARS-CoV-2 in China

Remarkable Age Distribution of OC43 vs. SARS-CoV-2 in China

Thank goodness I have a cold right now! LOL This was fascinating though and seriously reassuring. My little ones have runny noses and sneezing too.

Of the 14 patients in Sweden with CoViaD-19, six of theem have been able to leave the hospital, and are in quarantine at home: Flera coronasmittade i Göteborg har fått lämna sjukhuset

On Friday February 28, there had been done 500 tests for the virus, and at that time they had found seven infected. Runt 500 testade för coronaviruset i Sverige

It took almost one month between the first an second case of patients infected by CoViD-19 in Sweden, on January 31 it was a woman who had come home from Wuhan in China, the second and third was discovered on February 27, one having been in Germany, the other one in Iran. After that there have been patients who had visited Italy, but several of the new cases have been people who have been infected here in Sweden after having been in contact with the first cases (infected in Iran and Italy): Här är coronafallen i Göteborg

US Surgeon General begs people to ‘STOP BUYING MASKS!’ amid coronavirus panic

“'[Masks] are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can’t get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!'

Adams insisted that 'everyday preventive actions' were the 'best way to protect yourself,' listing 'staying home when you are sick and washing hands with soap and water” and seeking help if you are sick."

Speculating, but early identification, containment and tracing movement of infected patients seems to be the only way to stop the virus. In some cases, that means tracing two weeks of movement for infected patients. Italy was unable to get ahead of it.

Unfortunately, it's quite likely that infected people are traveling from high risk areas (China, Iran, South Korea) to other areas because they expect better health treatment.

For example, an infected 34 year old Iranian woman flew from Iran to Qatar, Denmark and Toronto on Feb 25/26. She traveled business class, was not wearing a face mask, and then took a public shuttle bus to the York Region. She reported the illness on Feb 27.

I think it's quite likely that she booked last minute flights because she was sick, and perhaps believed that being sick in an area with few cases is better than being sick in Iran. Imagine all the people she encountered during her travels, knowing she was sick, and all the planes that were not disinfected after she spread germs on those planes. Her priority is her health, with no concern for anyone else.
There is also the possibility that the Italian (and Iranian) versions are more easily spread to others, as the Swedish cases of human-to-human infections within Sweden have been from people who have got the virus in Italy and Iran.

I just messaged with an Iranian friend in Tehran. Things are really bad there, info is not very forthcoming and here I am in the US trying to give her advice. :(

And this report doesn't sound good either:
lack transparency, more deaths than reported, etc.

Interesting article regarding Coronavirus situation in Canada (February 28,2020,MacLean's News) at www.mcleans.ca./society/health/the-corona-virus-cant-be-contained-are-you-ready

Apparently after the SARS crisis, Canada's federal government passed the Quarantine Act and the government can now designate a private home or other facility as a quarantine location, with fines and jail time to enforce it, if necessary.

There is some question by a York University professor as to whether or not the Act would allow for the quarantine of a city.

(Hope the link works, I am new at posting on Websleuths so am learning still)

? That it was in the country and not caught until was there 14 days or so later, when pt. was very ill yet had been passing along and was spreading for that long?

The downsides of not doing surveillance,

or like Washington State just said... only testing (and following?) those that have symptoms that were contacts of the original case that was caught? And by then... 3 more generations of infections that they cannot keep up with as to containment and isolation?

Those are just two guesses.

Population density. That is probably why it spread so quickly.

Could it also be a religious issue? If a Catholic priest was infectious, and he gave mass, giving the infection to every person who took sacrament?

Dominican Republic confirms its first case of novel coronavirus

From CNN's Jessica Hasbun

The Dominican Republic confirmed its first case of the novel coronavirus, the Dominican Public Health Ministry said Sunday.

A 62-year-old Italian man came to Dominican Republic on Feb. 22 for vacation and did not have symptoms of the virus. He traveled to the country from Pesaro, Italy, according to Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas.

The man is stable and in an isolation room at the Ramón de Lara Military Hospital, located in San Isidro. The director of the hospital said that the patient was admitted Feb. 29.

I don't get fevers either. When I have my temperature taken at the doctor's office it is never even up to 98.6. I wonder if having hypothyroidism has anything to do with it? I am sure some of our knowledgeable medical professionals can give us the reason why not everyone will get a fever.

I have hypothyroidism too. My thyroid levels are managed well and currently good. But it doesn't seem to bring my temperature up either. Interesting!

I did think the advice given by another physician about masks was very good:

Wear a mask so you are not touching your nose or mouth, potentially tranferring virus particles from your hands. We never realize how often we touch our faces.

This is also the physician who recommends wearing gloves or wiping the handles of items commonly used: ie: gas station pump handles !

I have some great big clorox wipes. After I use one, I let it dry, and put it in my left hand pocket so I always have it to open doors, etc. I saw a gastroenterologist who did this all the time. She never touched a door knob or handle with her bare hands, she always had at least a paper towel in her hand. It doesn't have to be sopping wet with bleach, it's just the extra barrier, like coughing into a tissue.

I would agree that there is really no need for the general public to be outfitted with N95 respiratory masks, and they SHOULD be reserved for healthcare providers.

But I can't argue against a simple mask to stop from inadvertantly touching your face, or to guard against dust and large particulates. I was cleaning the garage yesterday and had one on just because of all the dust. I bought surgical masks with clear plastic visors on them, so that my eyes have some protection more than my glasses. I do find that I touch my glasses all the time, so I'm getting more wipes for cleaning glasses.

Or maybe the T-Rex costume.

Ooh the T Rex would work better for keeping people away wouldn't it?

I wonder if the guy that delivers Amazon would jump if I answered the door in a T Rex costume

A moment of levity....

CDC: To prevent coronavirus stay home, avoid physical contact and don't go into large crowds.

They have to be really bad when rich Iranians are taking several business class flights over 2 days to arrive in Canada where they report themselves sick. I almost wish that they were immediately sent back to Iran. Rewarding people who risk infecting thousands of people so they get preferential treatment is one reason the virus has spread.

Tourist Islands have the best chance to remain virus free, all they have to do is give up the tourist dollars for a couple of months. Again, priorities are for economics rather than people.
