I did think the advice given by another physician about masks was very good:

Wear a mask so you are not touching your nose or mouth, potentially tranferring virus particles from your hands. We never realize how often we touch our faces.

This is also the physician who recommends wearing gloves or wiping the handles of items commonly used: ie: gas station pump handles !

I have some great big clorox wipes. After I use one, I let it dry, and put it in my left hand pocket so I always have it to open doors, etc. I saw a gastroenterologist who did this all the time. She never touched a door knob or handle with her bare hands, she always had at least a paper towel in her hand. It doesn't have to be sopping wet with bleach, it's just the extra barrier, like coughing into a tissue.

I would agree that there is really no need for the general public to be outfitted with N95 respiratory masks, and they SHOULD be reserved for healthcare providers.

But I can't argue against a simple mask to stop from inadvertantly touching your face, or to guard against dust and large particulates. I was cleaning the garage yesterday and had one on just because of all the dust. I bought surgical masks with clear plastic visors on them, so that my eyes have some protection more than my glasses. I do find that I touch my glasses all the time, so I'm getting more wipes for cleaning glasses.
I hear ya, but I also hear the U.S. Surgeon General, and the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) saying don't wear the masks if you are healthy. (If you're sick, wear them to contain your germs so they don't spread to others, and if you work in health-care wear a mask because you're face-to-face with sick people all day)

Such a huge reluctance to heed advice from medical experts....and it's a bit concerning. If the general public can't comprehend and heed this simple advice about masks, what will happen if more complicated measures are required?

If you do want a mask, make sure to wash your hands before you touch the mask every single time. Otherwise, you're potentially spreading germs from your hands to the mask you're putting on your face, which would defeat the purpose of the mask.

I saw similar reports for Charleston and Savannah yesterday....

Port of Los Angeles is projecting a 25% drop in container volumes this month, as the economic impact of the coronavirus spreads across shipping operations and foreign supply chain. Imagine if 1 in 4 goods imported from Asia suddenly stopped coming. Impact just starting.
Eric Lipton on Twitter

I saw a video report on YT on the effect of shipments coming into the Port of Long Beach. Supposedly it’s the second largest port in the US? I had no idea. I didn’t even know there was a huge port there.

“The Port of Long Beach, also known as the Harbor Department of the City of Long Beach, is the second-busiest container port in the United States, after the Port of Los Angeles, which it adjoins.”

A moment of levity....

CDC: To prevent coronavirus stay home, avoid physical contact and don't go into large crowds.

Tourist Islands have the best chance to remain virus free, all they have to do is give up the tourist dollars for a couple of months. Again, priorities are for economics rather than people.
There is a very big population of Dominicans in NYC, and the population in the city has close ties to the Dominican Republic - lots of traveling back and forth. If there are cases in the Dominican Republic that are not contained, it's very possible it will be spread to NYC.

I am actually surprised there hasn't been a documented case in NYC yet.

They have to be really bad when rich Iranians are taking several business class flights over 2 days to arrive in Canada where they report themselves sick. I almost wish that they were immediately sent back to Iran. Rewarding people who risk infecting thousands of people so they get preferential treatment is one reason the virus has spread.

To be fair anyone attempting to travel to Iran must take at least two flights, direct flights between Canada and Iran don’t exist.

About masks, I spent four days in Göteborg, the Swedish city with the most cases of CoViD-19, and the only one I saw with a mask was a kid with a black mask with a smiling thooty grin, don't know if he was wearing it because the virus or as a joke.

I just want to say thank you to you for your thoughtful posts. I’ve scaled back on this forum because of some of the posts, both political and panic driven. You are certainly informative and necessary on here. Big thanks to Henry2326.

I don't know if this is a new California case or not:

Health officials confirm 4th coronavirus case in Santa Clara County

The article is dated Feb 29, so I'm not sure if this has already been reported. This is a household contact of the other Santa Clara positive woman.

I can see how quaranting an entire multi-generational household is just like creating a Coronavirurus incubator....

Of course. The 34 year old woman was infected so she booked business class flights from Iran to Qatar to Denmark to Canada. She did not wear a face mask and did not self-report. The day after she arrived in Canada, she reported that she is sick.

I find that very offensive, selfish, and consider it one of the very problematic reasons that the virus has spread around the world.

Canadians are now scrambling to track down people on all of those flights, as well as others that she was in contact with, during her reckless travels.

Whats been driving me crazy about the mask shortage is I dont understand why the state or federal governments havent already worked directly with the Hospital medical suppliers and intercept the mask supplies and make sure they get funneled to the health care workers first before any "extra" (if any) would be allowed to go to regular stores for the public.

I mean seriously.....if a hospital is relying on going to Walmart type stores to get their medical supplies, then that is not a hospital I want to go to. So why cant the government declare a state of emergency and force ALL mask suppliers to sell them the masks first (at last regular sold price) and make sure ALL the mask supplies get funneled to the medical staffs first either free or at a greatly reduced subsized rate. Use some of the tax money for something worthy like this, when its really needed like now, and intercept the supply chains and force suppliers to prioritize the masks to the right places.

Steps like this should have been taken about a week or two ago. I just dont get it at all that they keep complaining to the general public. Well, do your job and force the masks to go to the right places government officials.....please.....and like yesterday.

I don't think so, but they share hymnals and missals. In my church those are just in front of the pews and everyone handles them.
Same here. Not only that we offer each other the sign of peace by shaking hands are hugging those sitting around us. We dip our fingers into the same water, receive communion in our hand but some of the older people receive it in their mouth by the same priest placing it in our hand. Seems like a breeding ground for sure.

^ Many people who don't attend Mass regularly tend to go more frequently during Lent. Churches were likely crowded during Ash Wednesday services or self-imposition (some drive-throughs locally).

Healthcare tragedy waiting to happen...

3 | Canada has fewer acute care beds per capita than most of the other universal health care OECD nations. (US has less). This is one reason why we have waiting lists. Many of our hospitals routinely run at full capacity. Which, in turn, means there are no spare beds when an epidemic comes. Bill Gardner on Twitter

Probably the single most important headline this week:
- After just one week from the outbreak, Northern Italy is already considering expanding its hospital beds capacity because 1 in 11 patients goes in ICU

Believe me, I know LOL. That’s why I posted that :D

The minute the “C word” (Colorado) comes in, you guys will be standing in line like the Airplane video to smack me ahahaha

Jk. I sure don’t want to be that person...

We’ll all probably have our moments, but from what I’ve seen of the majority of folks on this thread, there’s a lot more level headed thinking and not a lot of panic in this group. There’s been enough knowledge shared that we’re all fairly educated on the situation, and we all have concerns, but panic and fearmongering has been very minimal. An awesome group all way around!!

And yes @margarita25 , we will ALL take turns slapping you if the need arises!! lol

Iran is obviously one issue, I personally find it more offensive that people from outbreak areas such as Hong Kong and Italy still feel it’s okay to go on vacation and infect places like the DR and Tenerife JMO
