I hear ya, but I also hear the U.S. Surgeon General, and the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) saying don't wear the masks if you are healthy. (If you're sick, wear them to contain your germs so they don't spread to others, and if you work in health-care wear a mask because you're face-to-face with sick people all day)I did think the advice given by another physician about masks was very good:
Wear a mask so you are not touching your nose or mouth, potentially tranferring virus particles from your hands. We never realize how often we touch our faces.
This is also the physician who recommends wearing gloves or wiping the handles of items commonly used: ie: gas station pump handles !
I have some great big clorox wipes. After I use one, I let it dry, and put it in my left hand pocket so I always have it to open doors, etc. I saw a gastroenterologist who did this all the time. She never touched a door knob or handle with her bare hands, she always had at least a paper towel in her hand. It doesn't have to be sopping wet with bleach, it's just the extra barrier, like coughing into a tissue.
I would agree that there is really no need for the general public to be outfitted with N95 respiratory masks, and they SHOULD be reserved for healthcare providers.
But I can't argue against a simple mask to stop from inadvertantly touching your face, or to guard against dust and large particulates. I was cleaning the garage yesterday and had one on just because of all the dust. I bought surgical masks with clear plastic visors on them, so that my eyes have some protection more than my glasses. I do find that I touch my glasses all the time, so I'm getting more wipes for cleaning glasses.
Such a huge reluctance to heed advice from medical experts....and it's a bit concerning. If the general public can't comprehend and heed this simple advice about masks, what will happen if more complicated measures are required?
If you do want a mask, make sure to wash your hands before you touch the mask every single time. Otherwise, you're potentially spreading germs from your hands to the mask you're putting on your face, which would defeat the purpose of the mask.
