We are in Georgia now --- so far on our journey we have had several pit stops and and an overnight stay at a motel, and to be honest I havent masked up-- we didnt
linger at the gas stations and there were hardly any people in these places--there
were no sanitary precautions in place at the motel ---it is just the way it is these
days-- While I am nervous about not masking up, I believe in the vaccine to
a great extent, especially with the booster---Iwill be counting the days
though (incubation)---At some point one has to try and live a quasi normal life,
although we will not be dining out or being around crowds of people.

Hi, neighbor. Just want to wish you a safe trip to Florida and a wonderful winter away from the cold and snow in Michigan.

My sister called a while ago and said that she is not feeling well. Her neighbor has Covid, and L thinks she might have been exposed. My sister is vaccinated but hasn't gotten a booster yet. Wasn't sure she wanted to get the booster after we told her about our reactions :( She lives in St. Clair County where Covid cases have been rampant. I'm glad that we had our family holiday gathering on Thanksgiving and will not be getting together again for Christmas.

I hope your sister doesn't have Covid, or if she does, that it will be a very mild case. Would be better with a booster on board + 2 weeks, of course.

Thank you for your kind thoughts-- I am so tired of the cold---here in Georgia
it is in the 50s- feels like summer!!!

I hope your sister does not have Covid, but if she does I hope
it is a mild case. It seems a lot of people have not gotten the booster--
I hesitated as well, but I am glad I did get it. I had more side effects with
the booster, but not as bad as what you experienced.

I just returned to NYC from Florida (elderly, ill parents or I wouldn't have gone) but I flew. My sister and her family, though, drove down to south Florida from New Jersey.
They stayed in a motel in South Carolina. My sister scrubbed everything down. She wore her mask when she went into any store along the way.

The good thing was of course that as they were getting more South, they were able to eat outdoors.
When we were all in Florida, that was the joy. Outside in the warm weather! Much safer.

We rented an Air B and B for two weeks and were a little nervous (my sister scrubbed the whole huge house) but we felt safer than in a hotel where people come and go all day.

In the airports, I think I wrote about it earlier, there were MANY people disregarding the MANDATORY masking. I just couldn't believe it. The excuse was that they were eating or drinking, but I saw plenty of people just gabbing with each other or on their phones, no masks.

I'm so glad you're enjoying your trip. My sister and family felt much safer going by car, except for the motel which my sister really hated.

We are all triple-vaxed, but omicron was discovered while we were there, so that was a little shattering. I took a PCR test before I went, despite us all being boosted, just because my parents are so elderly and in poor health.

It's 80° there and I wish I'd stayed longer! We all seem to be healthy still despite traveling.

Good health to all of you.

I just flew home from Florida as well. I flew Delta, and I feel like the flight attendants did a good job reminding people on the flight to keep their masks over their mouth and nose.

However, the airport itself was another story. I had a layover at LaGuardia and many people were either not wearing masks, or wearing them under their chin. In the terminal I was in all the restaurants were closed except one, and people were sitting at tables in and in front of the closed restaurants with no masks. They weren’t eating or drinking and were maskless.

There were airport employees all around but none were enforcing the mask mandate, or even suggesting to people that they put their mask on.

I am triple-vaccinated and wore an N-95 mask at all times at the airport and on the plane.

Traveling these days is certainly fraught with anxiety isnt it???

Good health to you and your family

Interesting to hear the travelers' reports above. We are staying home for the holidays. Concern about air travel and omicron are big factors--even tho we are triple vaccinated. Last June we drove to Vermont to celebrate a grandson's graduation from high school, and I thought it was likely we would be able to fly up for Christmas, but I'm glad we decided not to do it. Except for the part about not being with our family, of course.

We flew to Reno for Thanksgiving and it was similar - only place masks were enforced was on the plane.

It turns out that the Abbott BinaxNOW antigen home test kits that I got have already expired. They have a 12 month shelf life, apparently, although earlier test kits apparently had a 6 month or 9 month shelf life. Some of these earlier lot numbers have been extended to 12 months. You can call Abbott customer service and give them the lot number and they will check the expiry date. I guess our public library wasn't getting much demand, and so they were distributing them close to the expiry date of 12 months. So they told me not to use them beyond tomorrow, they expire December 12, 2021 (the 2 kits that I have).

I am just posting this here so that people know to check the expiry date if you buy them in person at a pharmacy or Walmart, etc. I am going to check with our library to see if they have received a more recent shipment from the state government, or when they will receive more in the new year, and see if I can replace these two expired kits.

I truly thought by now, 2 years into the pandemic,we would
be looking to be near the end of it, and yet here
we are, ---more surges, and more variants, and all because
a small to moderate segment of the population in our country
refuse to get vaccinated-- It is maddening, it is frustrating and
it is scary, with no end in sight

Just saw an article in the Daily Mail , which I cannot post from my tablet--
the jist of the article is that the efficacy of Pfizer and Moderna drops quite a bit
after 120 days-- you may want to locate tbe article and post it. They studied veterans
over a period of months. Dr Fauci is talking about a 4th booster- I am beginning to
think the weakness of this vaccine is its shelf life

I am sorry to hear about your sister being sick and possible exposure to Covid. All of the adults in my immediate family are boostered and had minor side effects from either Pfizer or Moderna booster.
I hope your sister feels better soon.

I hesitated to post this because it's such a breathtaking statement from Dr. Jonathan Reiner when he quotes German Health Minister Hans Spahn during a CNN interview today.

"It's not just a good idea to get a third dose. This should be mandatory."

He refers to German health minister Jens Spahn saying that this winter, you'll either be vaccinated, recovering from covid, or dead. "I think that's true in the US."

Geesh.

Omicron Wave Sees South Africa’s Weekly Excess Deaths Almost Double - BNN Bloomberg

"South African excess deaths, a measure of mortality above a historical average, almost doubled in the week ending Nov. 28 from the preceding seven-day period as a new coronavirus variant spread across the country.

During the period 2,076 more people died than would normally be expected, the South African Medical Research Council said in a report on Wednesday. That compares with 1,091 the week earlier."
