I cannot even fathom that the US is doing the same inadequate unprepared baloney now as we did 2 flipping years ago! How do we not have tests ready to go? How are we repeatedly caught unaware when every single thing from PPE to tests to vaccines to antibody treatments should have been stockpiled long ago? It’s mortifying and infuriating. Here we go again!
PS my state ran out of tests today. There’s a testing facility about 5 minutes from my house and the local PD just put out an announcement to avoid the major road where the site is because it’s backed up for miles with cars waiting to get in and park. Estimates are that we as a state are over 20k tests short today for the people who needed them.
What is it, exactly, they expect people to do? Home tests are becoming scarcer by the moment, available appointments for testing are days out (here, at least). jmo

ETA: And vulnerable people have to start mab's or anti-virals within days of symptoms. How are they supposed to do that if they can't even get a test???

Child Covid hospitalizations are up, especially in 5 states (nbcnews.com)

Children have been hospitalized at nearly twice the rate of adults in the past 4 weeks, an NBC News data analysis shows.

In the last four weeks, the average number of children hospitalized with Covid-19 jumped 52 percent, from a low of 1,270 on Nov. 29 to 1,933 on Sunday, according to an NBC News analysis of Department of Health and Human Services data.

In the same time period, adult Covid hospitalizations increased 29 percent, suggesting that pediatric hospitalizations rose at nearly twice the rate...

I think that as the virus spreads through a population, the most susceptible hosts are affected most severely at first. For Covid, that seems to those who are 65+. As more of that age group have either died of the virus, recovered or been vaccinated, the virus now seems to be causing more death in the 40-65 age group, who generally have lower vaccination rates, than those 65+. In addition, children have gone from making up 1+3% of positive cases, to now making up 20-25% of positive cases. I don't have exact links to hand, but this information is from vaccination rates posted above, information from the TWIV episode with Paul Offit, and corresponding show notes that link to pediatric positivity rates. JMO.
You might find this article interesting. It speaks to much of what your post says.

Why Covid Death Rates Are Rising for Some Groups

Also from the article..

However, he said, his hospital has seen a lot of kids test positive for Covid without necessarily showing symptoms or getting sick.

"We test anybody who’s admitted to the hospital for whatever reason to see whether or not they have Covid, and we’re definitely seeing an increase in cases. However, we’re really not seeing an increase in children who are hospitalized for Covid or in the intensive care unit for Covid," Offit said.

We knew this new variant would explode but seeing these numbers is a harsh reality. I think I will triple mask if I have to go to grocery store etc. Numbers in my City here in SW Ontario are highest past few days than thru this whole pandemic.

IMO this is an important distinction. These cases were only picked up because they test EVERYONE who is admitted even if they are admitted for other reasons. Many of these cases are not symptomatic but are being picked up through routine testing. It's a good thing that some people are not symptomatic. They are building immunity without symptoms.

I have to go downtown to Baylor Hospital for a scan tomorrow. I sent my contact at the doctor's office an email saying I wasn't crazy about being downtown Dallas at the large hospital with COVID surging like it is. She said it could be pushed forward but no more that one month and who knows what COVID will be doing then. No good answers on much of anything at this point in time. I opted to keep the appointment tomorrow but will be wearing double masks because I believe a month from now could be a real s__t show.

Unfortunately, I think you have to do it. I wasn't happy going in for scans yesterday either, but if it's necessary it's necessary. Just try to keep as safe as possible. jmo

One would think the citizens of AZ would be demanding answers from their state government as to why their death rate is so much higher than it should be. Or maybe the average citizen hasn't realized or been made aware of that fact??? jmo

It has been a never ending debate on AZ Department of Health twitter feed. Same people have been arguing for almost two years - one group calling the Governor a murderer and demanding mask mandates (and bar and restaurant closures) and the other half telling them that they are free to move to Oregon or Washington or wherever if they want to be locked down and told what to do. It's exhausting because it never changes.

Health agency warns Texas is running out of the only antibody treatment effective against the omicron variant

Texas’ health services department is warning that five of its regional infusion centers have run out of the only monoclonal antibody treatment known to be effective against the omicron variant of COVID-19, which now accounts for 90% of new cases in the state.

The Texas Department of State Health Services says its regional infusion centers in Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, San Antonio and The Woodlands "have exhausted their supply of sotrovimab," the only monoclonal antibody treatment that appears to be effective against the omicron variant. The department said the scarcity stems from a national shortage of the treatment, which is made by GlaxoSmithKline and received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May.

The affected infusion centers will not be able to offer sotrovimab until federal authorities ship more supplies in January. Chris Van Deusen, a department spokesperson, said it’s likely other infusion centers will use the remainder of their sotrovimab in the next few days.

I saw this report yesterday. Millions of people that would qualify for sotrovimab are out of luck until January. That is scary. When in January pray tell?

Granted, we also joined Florida and Texas in remaining open. I'd hear stories from people who traveled through New Mexico and it was a nightmare - everything closed.

One thing that is odd is that Arizona's death rate has been increasing at fast rate, since September, and the last six months have seen a much higher percentage below 65.

One would think the citizens of AZ would be demanding answers from their state government as to why their death rate is so much higher than it should be. Or maybe the average citizen hasn't realized or been made aware of that fact??? jmo

Imo @CharlestonGal asks a question that I think is somewhat answered by the comment from @MrX.

In a state like Arizona, where @MrX has told us before that virtually no one wears masks, and that a place like New Mexico is “a nightmare” because so much has closed down—— well to me it seems that’s the connection. Arizona doesn’t believe in mask wearing or in restricting entry to indoor places, so it’s inevitable that the death rate is climbing. In September it was likely still Delta.

Now again, to be clear and as I’ve posted before—-here in NYC we have a high positivity rate, despite strict laws regarding vaccine mandates and masks. And as I’ve also stated before, the stores and customers and apartment buildings where we own our co-ops are NOT obeying.

I just returned with two friends from Dunkin’ Donuts and then our friend’s apartment. Dunkin is plastered with signs that anyone aged 12 and up must show proof of vaccine, and that masks are required. (It’s not a drive-through, we have to enter the store). My friends and I were double masked, yet customers came in and while we waited to take our coffee to go, half of them did not wear masks. And zero of us were asked for vaccine proof.

IT’S ALL A FACADE. A POTEMKIN VILLAGE.

And the same thing going to my friend’s apartment. We have signs and rules REQUIRING masks in the common areas, like the lobby, elevators, mail room and laundry room, but only about 50% are wearing them. We own our co-ops, they cost more than a huge house in another state, and yet the basic safety rules are not adhered to, not even by our security force which is supposed to hand out $100 violations.

So, IMO if people can’t stir themselves enough to slap a mask on their face for five minutes indoors, and to get a one-second vaccine, this virus will never end. It’s playing with us because we are so ignorant.

The eligible people in my family are triple-vaxed. I don’t hang out with any friends who are not. I’ve done what I can do.

Well if they don’t believe Covid is real or anything to bother putting on a mask on for then why get the infusion?

I don't get it either. If you don't believe in or take the advice of the medical science people, why go to the building full of medical science people??? Makes no sense. jmo

I'm sick and bored and have been looking at random data. So, what the heck is up with Arizona??? They are #3 in deaths per million (3,295), behind only #1 Mississippi (3,494) and #2 Alabama (3,348).

Their four corners neighbors Utah (1,176), New Mexico (2,754), and Colorado (1,817) are all much, much lower in deaths per million than Arizona. As are all 47 other states.

So, what's up with that? Any ideas? I see their vaccination rate is really low (56%) but so is my state (53%) and we're currently #16 in deaths per million, which is not great, but way better than #3 Arizona. jmo

United States COVID - Coronavirus Statistics - Worldometer
IMO it might personal behaviour on the part of those most at risk from serious complications and death. Perhaps they don't believe they are at risk, or perhaps they can't take the necessary measures to protect themselves.

It could also be that there are more people at risk, because of pre-existing conditions. Even though the average age is relatively young, perhaps the population of older people is significantly less healthy than other places. For example, many people with severe respiratory problems move to Arizona specifically because the dry air.

The truth is when the non believers (for the most part) get sick enough to be in the hospital, they change their tune really fast. I can't tell you how many interviews taken in various hospitals here end with the patient saying get the vaccine while gasping for air. I have seen others taken in the hospital that say they still would not want the vaccine but they aren't the norm. I've come to believe that we live amongst lots of stupid people. Way more than I'd have ever guessed. Just flat out stupid in the face of proof, studies, professional recommendations, etc. I can hardly watch their interviews, I feel as if my head will explode.
