( 5 days isolated plus 5 days wearing a mask. Yah. Sure. To minimize the risk to others That’ll happen.)

Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others.

I think that what is happening with employee shortages is the reason for this change. The workforce is shrinking due to so many people being infected at the same time.

It has little to do with how much virus an infected person is transmitting ... other than them trying to keep the infected person isolated at home while they are highly contagious, and hope that they will mask while less contagious.

EXPLAINER: New easy-to-use COVID-19 pills come with a catch | AP News

Newly infected COVID-19 patients have two new treatment options that can be taken at home.

But that convenience comes with a catch: The pills have to be taken as soon as possible once symptoms appear.

The challenge is getting tested, getting a prescription and starting the pills in a short window.

The antiviral pills aren’t for everyone who gets a positive test. The pills are intended for those with mild or moderate COVID-19 who are more likely to become seriously ill. That includes older people and those with other health conditions like heart disease, cancer or diabetes that make them more vulnerable.

You’ll need a prescription first from a doctor or other authorized health worker. The U.S. government is buying the pills from Merck and Pfizer and providing them for free, but supplies will be limited initially. They’ll be shipped to states where they will be available at drugstores, community health centers and other places. Treatment lasts five days.

Some pharmacists may be able to administer a quick COVID-19 test and prescribe the pills all in one visit. They already do this in many states for flu or strep throat.

I hope the home tests I ordered early this month just for the purpose of getting the antiviral pills will be accepted by my doctor. I also hope I don’t need to use them!

( 5 days isolated plus 5 days wearing a mask. Yah. Sure. To minimize the risk to others. As if that’s a thing)

“Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for 5 days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for 5 days to minimize the risk of infecting others.”

“We want to make sure there is a mechanism by which we can safely continue to keep society functioning while following the science.”

Case in point to my post yesterday, the CDC keeps changing information. Granted, this is a new disease. But if this is based on science, where is the data to support this change?

Massive New Bird Flu Outbreak Could Be 2022’s Deadly Pandemic

Israel’s National Security Council has assumed control of a massive bird flu outbreak in the Galilee, which scientists warn could become a “mass disaster” for humans.

Over half a billion migrating birds pass through the area every year, heading for warm African winters or balmy European summers, making this a catastrophic location for a major bird flu outbreak—right at the nexus of global avian travel.

The virus can be deadly if it infects people. The World Health Organization says more than half of the confirmed 863 human cases it has tracked since 2003 proved fatal. Most strains or variants of avian flu, H5N1, are relatively difficult to transmit to people.

Yossi Leshem, one of Israel’s most renowned ornithologists, told The Daily Beast, however, that it is the ability of these viruses to mutate into new strains that poses such a threat, as we have seen with the coronavirus.

“There could be a mutation that also infects people and turns into a mass disaster,” said Leshem, a zoologist at Tel Aviv University and director of the International Center for the Study of Bird Migration at Latrun.

So far, at least 5,400 wild cranes have died infected with the new H5N1 avian flu, which Israeli authorities fear could expand into a global emergency.

The deaths of thousands of wild birds in the Hula Nature Reserve, one of the world’s premier bird sanctuaries, “is an extraordinary event with global ramifications,” warned Tel Aviv University Professor of Zoology Noga Kronfeld Shor in an interview with Reshet Bet Radio.

Shor, who is also the chief scientist at Israel’s Ministry of the Environment, noted that the carcasses of other waterbirds, such as pelicans and egrets, have already been found.

Israelis have been warned not to approach any wild bird that looks sick, and not to touch any bird droppings.

It seems more about staffing shortages than new data to me. MOO

Especially since this came after thousands of flights were canceled due to employees being out with COVID.

Reminds me how the NFL changed their COVID testing guidelines after having to postpone several games last week.

Comparing the CDC to the NFL doesn't say much for the CDC. :)

Originally I had read that the new guidelines were for healthcare workers due to staffing shortages, but it seems to have been expanded. It makes sense from a practical standpoint. We knew omicron was likely to wreak havoc on services (grocery stores, truckers, etc) due to people being out sick.

CDC shortens Covid isolation period to 5 days for people without symptoms (nbcnews.com)

The agency attributed the change to growing evidence that the virus is most infectious in the two or three days after symptoms arise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that people who test positive for Covid-19 but have no symptoms should isolate for five days, down from the previous recommendation of 10 days.

The agency attributed the change to growing evidence that the virus is most infectious in the two or three days after symptoms arise.

In addition to cutting the time in half for isolation, the CDC said that for people who are asymptomatic, an additional five days of wearing a mask when around others is recommended.

"Therefore, people who test positive should isolate for five days and, if asymptomatic at that time, they may leave isolation if they can continue to mask for five days to minimize the risk of infecting others," the CDC said in a statement...

Which States Saw the Most COVID Deaths in 2021? America's Least Vaccinated
States with the highest COVID death rates tended to have the lowest vaccination rates and fewer social and economic restrictions

Which States Had the Most COVID Deaths in 2021? A Look at the Data – LX
States with the U.S.’s lowest vaccination rates lost residents to COVID at a rate two to five times higher than states with high vaccination rates in 2021, according to an analysis of the country’s 458,000 COVID-related deaths and nearly 500 million vaccines administered this year.

The states with the worst COVID death rates in 2021, according to Johns Hopkins University, were Oklahoma and Alabama, whose national vaccination rates rank 37th and 50th, respectively. Oklahoma lost one of every 403 residents to COVID this past year, while Alabama lost one of every 435 residents.

What is the rationale for this sudden change? At times, the changes seem reactionary. JMO

It's not due to changing information or data. It's due to staff shortages because so many people are out sick that businesses (hospitals, airlines, etc) can't operate. They need bodies back at work even if it's not an optimal scenario for public health.

This is what happens when too many people get sick at once. You have to keep society running somehow, even if it's not great. jmo

Eta- even with a fever and looking like Patrick Dempsey from Outbreak he tested Negative with an at-home test. He didn’t test positive with an at home test until he’s been visibly and physically sick for 24 hours. My rapids was negative but PCR was positive. I did take an at home test a few days into my sickness (after I had felt better) and it was glaring positive while my husbands was barely there anymore). I trust an at home when it’s positive but not necessarily when it’s negative.

Yes, if I need to use my at home test kits I will wait until the symptoms are really obvious so I can trust the result. But it’s kind of a balancing act, since I got them in order to test early enough for the new antiviral pill to be helpful. The window of opportunity isn’t large.

I have had all 3 Pfizer. Mask mandate here in Ontario Canada since forever lol. If I do go out I double mask due to Omicron. I am more than happy to do my part. For myself and those I love.

Yes, we've been spared the confusion that has occurred elsewhere. Since covid started, there hasn't been a time when it was ok to stop wearing masks. And now, with winter upon us, they feel so nice and warm on my face that sometimes I drive home with it on in my car.

I'm wearing N95 masks now that Health Canada has recommended we all upgrade.

Thank you. Her stepmom just tested positive on Christmas morning and I pray that this might be a wake up call that she still has time to get jabbed. It will protect her and her baby boy once he is born.
I hope she gets vaccinated. We had 2 young unvaccinated moms-to-be die. Thankfully, both babies weren't infected.
My daughter is a NICU nurse practitioner and the new data recommends that delivery room staff should wear full PPE for vaginal deliveries because of the risk of a patient’s Covid positive status. The reasoning is that Covid can be aerosolized during delivery.

Upgrade to what?
N95's instead of cloth or surgical masks, which may have stopped earlier variants to some degree, but don't stop Omicron. jmo

Indeed. It's pretty much impossible for a mom in labour to wear a mask, so staff need to wear full PPE. We also had a local, unvaccinated mom die soon after delivering her baby. It was so very sad.

I think you should be okay. The anti-viral pills have to be started within 5 days of symptoms. If you test the first day of symptoms (like I did) the clock starts ticking then. As I understand the literature, the pills must be started within 5 days of symptoms, not within 5 days of a positive test. jmo

Look at those faces. They were taught to do something for the greater good. Too bad that lesson appears to be in short supply in 2019-
