I dont mean or want to spew anger-- one of tbeir big mistakes IMO was
when they advised vaccinated people that they could stop wearing masks- this advice was shortly followed by outbreak of Delta--- why didnt they anticipate
this aggressive variant? they are supposed to be on top of it-- so what happened was Delta hit and unvaccinated folks decided they didnt have to mask up and
Delta took off and caused a massive surge.

I suspect a lot of the unvaccinated people were already not wearing masks and the CDC advice made little difference to their behavior. MOO

I'm convinced that if masks weren't compulsory in indoor public places, most people wouldn't be wearing them. They don't wear them any more where there's no inspections (like in apartment buildings for example). People were more disciplined at the beginning of the pandemic, especially in the first wave which was relatively mild here.

I can only talk about my own experience. Prior to the CDC advice to unmask,
when I went to the grocery store most people were masked, after CDC
suggestec vaccinated peop!e could unnask, masks were rare.

Recommendations only work if people are acting upon them. In Europe this can also depend on cultural differences. There's more vaccine resistance in certain regions than others. That's why mask and testing mandates are necessary IMO.

What are your state and county mandates? In my county we still wear masks in indoor places. I believe the CDC can only recommend but the states and counties can make the rules for their citizens. ??

I've found that mandates only work with carrot and stick. I live in a State that did minimal Covid mitigation and the only mandates that were enforced were those affecting bars. The only real power the State had was to threaten liquor licenses, so that's where enforcement was. It was odd seeing my anti-mask, anti-vax pub owners throwing people out for not wearing masks and yelling at folks for violating distancing rules. At Walmart people would put on a mask to get past the door guard and then immediately take it off. Same with Vegas - Nevada can claim to have a state-wide mask mandate but casinos are the only places where one will ever see any enforcement because they have to power to take away something people desperately want.

I am in Michigan--there are no mandates in this state and in my county.
In fact there was a mask mandate until the CDC suggested vaccinated
people no !onger needed to wear masks and then.the mandate went away

I am from Michigan as well. It seems some business owners suggest masks but honestly, less than half of the folks here in the state wear them. We no longer have capacity limits or social distance requirements. I was at a Lions game a while back and there were no protocols.

New CDC isolation guidelines raise concerns among health experts — NPR

Gist: many doctors and scientists feel that the new guidelines are not sufficient for public safety. However, the CDC director believes that we should be able to trust infected people to isolate for five days, and thereafter rigorously wear their masks for the next five days while they resume their normal activities.

My opinion: the once vaunted CDC is losing its grip. How can Dr. Wallensky believe that the general public can be “trusted” to adhere to these guidelines? It won’t happen, and I agree with the many public health doctors who believe this will lead to further spirals of disease.

Can we share memes? Because I saw a hilarious one about this today.

CDC defends Covid isolation guidelines amid omicron surge (nbcnews.com)

The new guidance, which shortens the recommended isolation time from 10 days to 5 days for people without symptoms, has come under criticism from some health experts.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on Wednesday defended the agency's new isolation guidance for people who test positive for Covid-19.

Her remarks, made in a series of interviews with television networks and at a White House Covid-19 Response Team briefing, comes as the Biden administration grows concerned that a surge in cases, fueled by the fast-moving omicron variant, could lead to masses of Americans being out sick, disrupting society.

But the new CDC guidance, which shortens the recommended isolation time from 10 days to five days for people without symptoms, has come under harsh criticism from some health experts who say it was not based on "science" and could cause still infectious asymptomatic people to transmit the virus to others...

I'm in Michigan, too, and agree with others from my state. When there were mandates, most people complied. As soon as the mandates were lifted, very few people wore masks. Mandatory social distancing is a thing of the past, and there are no longer capacity limits in bars/restaurants as there once were. DH and I wear masks in crowded places like grocery stores, but we are definitely in the minority. We don't go out to eat often but wear masks when entering and leaving a restaurant. All medical facilities require masks.

The headline is misleading IMO. Yes people were careful, but guess what, they let their guard down: Oh, I thought going to just one luncheon would be ok- it wasn't. You just cannot drop your guard with this variant.

It isn't easy to decide what activity is "safe'- these days it appears no activity that involves any other humans is safe. Today we went to a pizza place to get take out. The guy behind the counter did not have a mask. My husband and I had masks. Is that enough to keep us safe? I don't know but I hope so.

Ontario residents will need a QR code to prove their vaccination status as of Jan. 4.

That means starting next Tuesday, if you want to eat inside a restaurant, or sit in at a bar, movie theatre or other settings, proof of vaccination without a QR code won't be enough.

The province also said those places won't be able to accept doctor notes as of Jan. 10. (Those with an eligible medical exemption can ask their doctor or a registered nurse to submit the exemption for review in order to receive a QR code.)

Here's what you need to know about getting your QR code, including how to get a free card that features your code.

<more at link>

My DD went to dinner at a (socially distanced) restaurant yesterday. Masks must be worn until you are seated and any time you leave the table.

Our vaccination status is linked to our phone QR code scanners.
We check in using the restaurants QR code, a green light comes on if your record indicates you are fully vaccinated.
If your record does not show full vaccination, an orange light comes on and you are excused from the restaurant (or other venue).

This can only work when a state health dept has a centralised method of collecting the vaccine data.

I am but Michigan is my home state and that is where I was when the CDC said okay to unmask to vaccinated folks.
