It sometimes seems like these football posts are a weekly occurrence, and it brought a question to mind. I know that this thread tends to revolve around an older demographic, but I wondered if any of you know younger people who take the same approach to Covid - triple vaxxed, double masked, haven't been in a restaurant in two years, would never consider flying, etc.? I know I've seen young friends wearing masks in their Facebook profile pictures, and I have a young relative that works for a company that takes it all very seriously, which is reflected in the attitudes of her and her coworkers. I don't know how wide spread this is among younger generations.
There is a stark difference between the vaccination rate and the case rate among age groups. For instance, the vaccination rate for 18-24 year olds is only 58%. The vaccination rate for 50-64 year olds is 78%.

US Coronavirus vaccine tracker

The case rate for 18-29 year olds is a whopping 8.8M while the case rate for over 65's is only 4.4M.

Statistically speaking, 18-29 year olds are in the #1 spot for case numbers and dead last in vaccination %.

80s vaxxed (idk about boosted) FIL caught covid a week ago. Is in hospital for 2nd time in 5 days after feeling worse. No one can go in and we have no updates. 80s vaxxed MIL now getting sick and sounds horrible. Immuno-issues middle age (their) daughter visiting there now coughing like crazy. We are all worried sick.
Several of my patients this week canceled due to being positive. Cases are skyrocketing.

Sorry to hear about your family members sick with Covid. I hope they all get better soon.

My kids are all vaxxed, in their 20's. They go out, have fun, I doubt they wear masks all of the time. I am sure that their lives are not as curtailed as my husband and I are living. Nor would I expect them to live like this. We only saw my daughter for Christmas, the rest were busy working.

My kids are in their 20s/30s and only go out to work or the grocery store. My daughter is even more strict about it than I am, and I'm pretty strict. Her friends are pretty good about it but not as strict as she is. I don't see my son's friends as much so don't know about them.

My two 30 something children and their spouses are double vaxxed and boosted. They wear masks (right now it's KN95's) when they are outside their homes.
Two of the above work outside the home (one is a superintendent of a local school district and one is a zoo trainer and keeper so they also mask at work) and two work from home. Where we live you need to be masked in all indoor places but my son who works for the L.A. Zoo has to mask at all times at work (even when outside). They've all been taking this very seriously.
They do occasionally go out to eat and two of them took a flight not too long ago to visit a spouses parents.

I have it recorded so I'll be watching it today!

OT: About 10 years ago my daughter surprised me for Mothers Day with to the Hollywood Bowl to see Carol King & James Taylor. I'll NEVER forget it! It really was a dream come true to see them.

Wow! What a treat. We’ve never seen either one…or another favorite The Eagles.

It was really thoughtful of her. It was at the Hollywood Bowl. She was actually as excited as I was!

Florida hospital system says 50% of its COVID patients are mainly there for other reasons

53adc759c270bb3a5535f3059c12521a

"Jackson Health System hospitals currently have 439 patients who have tested positive for COVID-19," the Jackson Health System said in a tweet on Monday.

"Of those, 220 patients — or 50% — are admitted to the hospital primarily for non-COVID reasons."

The post was a relatively rare snapshot of the prevalence of so-called incidental COVID in the US.

In separate press conferences on Monday, New York Gov. Katy Hochul and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that incidental cases could be making up a good proportion of hospitalized cases their states.

"Beginning tomorrow, we're going to be asking all hospitals to break out for us how many people are being hospitalized because of COVID symptoms [and] how many people … happen to be testing positive," Hochul said.

Anthony Fauci, the White House chief medical advisor, recently warned that COVID-19 hospitalization data should be taken with a grain of salt, Insider previously reported.

He said in a Wednesday interview that focused on admissions in children, that some would be admitted for "a broken leg, or appendicitis, or something like that," and only later turn out to have COVID-19.

COVID-19 cases like that can make up a substantial proportion of hospital admissions.

People falling back to twitter even for testing advice...a throat swab may detect Omicron much better then a nasal swab....Why this has to come via twitter ????

Omicron is not a Pokemon-style "final evolution" of SARS-CoV-2. It's still mutating rapidly, including in the spike protein, and with the amount of replication it is doing out there right now, we can expect new variants. Hoping is not a strategy. Giving up is not a plan.

More realism...

The throat swab positive while nasal swab negative testing story is becoming quite common. Here is another person with 3 negative nasal tests but got an immediate positive when she switched to a throat swab.

#Omicron is different - we must adapt.

Well, there it is. Today, with the “wrong” (i.e. cold) symptoms and after a string of negative LFTs, I finally took Twitter advice and swabbed my throat as well as my nose (no mean feat with that diddly stick). If you think you might have COVID, consider adding the throat sample

Is this a totally different test, or is it the same test--just swabbing in the throat instead of the nose?????

confused.

More than 1 million new COVID-19 cases were reported in the United States on Monday, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The 1,082,549 new infections were about double last week's record daily cases, according to the university's data. This is likely due to a reporting backlog of cases from holiday testing.
COVID live updates: US reports 1 million new daily COVID cases

Earlier on this thread I posted that Dr. Campbell said in December that by the end of January, the U.S. would have about 1 million cases of Covid-19 a day, but I remembered incorrectly, he said that the U.S. would have from 2-3 million cases per day by the end of January, if the U.S. followed the U.K. in terms of the surge in cases due to omicron, and adjusted for U.S. population.

Well here, its basically the same test but there are slight variations in the instructions. The original freebies sent to your home by the Gov instructed that you go in your throat and then up your nose. The latest ones instruct up your nose only. Luckily for us, we had some of the older ones so when Mr HKP had to test for 7 days at Christmas he would use both sorts. I found this reassuring, with the chat re throat swabs being more accurate for Omicron.

It's the nasal swab test, some people are swabbing thier throat first with the swab in the test kit.

In December, she spoke against vaccine mandates at a rally by right-wing student group Turning Post USA, reportedly telling protesters “there’s nothing that matters more than our freedoms right now.”
I’m sure her grieving family can take comfort in that.

Wow, she was young too. Don't understand why people think they are invincible in the face of Covid.

I understand it can be a bit challenging to swab both throat and nose with those little swabs the test kits provide, but I guess it can be done.

The swabs in our test kits are 6 inches long, just checked the kits I have that expired. These are the Abbott BinaxNow home tests.
